Juliet Morgan as the Blue Fairy, Aren Duffy as Geppetto and Jaiden David as Pinocchio share the
stage during the opening performance of My Son Pinocchio, Jr. on July 30. The play follows Gep-
petto, Pinocchios father, on his journey to find his son. The play was filled with musical numbers
and dances, some of which had never been performed on stage before.

Bertha Brown Bendel has seen
a lot from her front porch in 89
years. She has seen Moorestown
change from a rural town of
farms to a bustling business dis-
trict.
I used to be able to count the
cars as they passed by on Main
Street, Bendel said. It was a
very happy life. It is very hectic
now.
Bendels home was built in 1889
and she has lived there for the
majority of her life. She inherited
the home from her parents, who
earned the house through hard
work and dedication.
My parents worked for the
Moore family, who owned the
house before they did, Bendel
said. They did the cooking,
housekeeping, gardening and
even worked as the chauffeur for
the three Quaker siblings. And
when the Moore family passed
on, they left the house to my par-
ents.
Over the years, Bendel has
seen Moorestown evolve. And
while the physical look of the
town has continued to change,
she sees that most of the people
still share the same values that
made the town what it was.
I have seen business change
and move, she said. Ive seen
farms turned into stores. What I
havent seen is the people change
too much. And Ive seen it all
from my front porch.
Bendel has enjoyed the front
porch of that house on Main
Street since she was a child,
watching the world pass by her.
Four years ago, though, the dy-
namic of the front porch
changed.
Bendel has always been close
with Mazie Stackhouse, 91. The
two went to school together at
Moorestown High School; they
worked together in Philadelphia
when their husbands went off to

The majority of kids spend the
summer going into their senior
year with friends at the beach.
Olivia Sowa, who is entering her
senior year at Moorestown
Friends School, decided to spend
hers hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro,
the worlds highest free-standing
mountain.
It was an amazing trip, Sowa
said. Being able to look out from
on top of one of the highest
points on the planet was an expe-
rience I will never forget.
While she hasnt done much
hiking in her life, Sowa is used to
the outdoors. She attends the
Tripp Lake Camp every summer
in New York, where she learned a
lot of skills that were helpful dur-
ing her ascent of Mt. Kiliman-
jaro.
It definitely wasnt roughing
it at Tripp Lake, but we did a lot of
activities in the woods, she said.
It was definitely helpful to have a
little bit of a background in
camping.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest
mountain in Africa at 19,341 feet,
making it one of the Seven Sum-
Special to The Sun

T
he calendar just turned the
page to August, and here we
are, talking about November al-
ready. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 4, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates them-
selves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the next four years.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christie is firmly
entrenched into his post for another
few years, and a successor to President
Obama wont be selected until 2016.
In New Jersey, the two biggest elec-
tions will be for a U.S. Senate seat be-
tween Democrat Cory Booker and Re-
publican Jeff Bell, and a U.S. House of
Representatives seat (1st Congression-
al District) between Republican Garry
Cobb, Democrat Donald Norcross and
independent candidate Scot John
Tomaszewski.
But these elections are just as impor-
tant, if not more so, on a local level.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of educa-
tion will be holding elections to choose
new members to represent the town.
Mayors, councilmembers and school
board members often have a greater
impact on your daily life than your
governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum has more
of an impact on your day-to-day life,
and those local post holders are the
ones who control those areas the most.
So just because you wont be voting
for the next governor or the next presi-
dent doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we possi-
bly can this fall, especially when there
is a contested election at the municipal
level.
If your town has a contested munici-
pal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you all the detailed informa-
tion about the election itself, as well as
profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues that are impor-
tant to you.
If you have any questions that youd
like us to ask the candidates, please
feel free to email us at the address to
the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues at hand. What
happens behind those curtains in No-
vember could have a profound impact
on what happens in front of them for
the next four years.

Police departments in Burling-
ton County are now equipped
with an antidote that can be used
to reverse heroin overdoses.
Kits containing Narcan, the
aerosol form of the drug Nalox-
one, has been distributed to 30
municipal police departments as
well as the Burlington County
Sheriff s Department. More than
60 officers were trained to admin-
ister the antidote.
For many people who fatally
overdose on heroin, death comes
because they have stopped
breathing. The Narcan antidote
provides the person with the abil-
ity to breathe again. After it is ad-
ministered, overdose victims will
be given a medical evaluation, ac-
cording to the antidote programs
protocol.
This is a very powerful tool
that has already shown to be very
effective in other counties,
Burlington County Prosecutor
Robert D. Bernardi said. Narcan
offers a second chance. We can
only hope that those who are
saved through this initiative real-
ize how close they came to dying
and use that as motivation to bat-
tle their addiction in an attempt
to lead a drug-free life.
Last month, Gov. Christie an-
nounced the statewide expansion
of the heroin antidote pilot pro-
gram that was authorized in
April for Monmouth and Ocean
counties. Since then, Monmouth
has performed 13 reversals and
Ocean has performed 59. Camden
County reported 24 uses of Nar-
can since May 9.
The antidote has yet to be used
in Burlington County. After re-
ceiving an endorsement for the
initiative from the Burlington
County Police Chiefs Associa-
tion, Prosecutor Bernardi author-
ized using approximately $6,500
in drug forfeiture money to fund
the initial purchase of 209 Nar-
can kits.
Local police can now administer
Narcan antidote for opiate overdoses

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders has adopt-
ed a budget that cuts county prop-
erty taxes for the fifth year in a
row. The freeholders 2014 budget
decreases county property taxes
by $511,260.
I am proud to announce that
we have once again cut taxes
while maintaining and enhanc-
ing the first rate services we offer
for families, seniors, veterans and
the most vulnerable among us,
said Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio. Through our efforts to
do more with less the amount of
tax dollars required to run county
government has now decreased
by $24.2 million since 2008, more
than in any other county in the
state of New Jersey.
In fact, during the same time
period county property taxes
across the state increased $18.6
million. Burlington County con-
tinues to have the lowest per resi-
dent cost when compared to other
counties throughout the state, at
just $339 per resident compared to
an average of $551.70 statewide.
While other counties are taxing
more, Burlington County is tax-
ing less.
Over the last six years the
county share of our residents
property tax bill has decreased by
over 20 percent. Last year county
taxes made up only 14.9 percent of
a residents property tax bill.
Garganio continued, It was this
commitment to fiscal responsibil-
ity that led the respected Pew
Charitable Trust to credit
Burlington County with having
the lowest residential tax burden
in the Philadelphia region.

county property taxes for fifth year

Local residents may help those

Were asking Moorestown res-

understand and enroll in a
Medicare Savings Program.
Those who qualify may receive as
much as $5,000 in annual assis-
tance to help with Medicare ex-
penses.
Times are tough for many
people, especially those living on
fixed or limited incomes. I strong-
ly encourage Medicare benefici-
aries to learn more about these
savings opportunities and qualifi-
cations, said Karen Bennett, re-
tired and senior volunteer pro-
gram director.
By enrolling in a MSP, income-
eligible seniors and individuals
with disabilities who are enrolled
in Medicare can save a minimum
of $1,000 on health-care expenses.
MSP covers the Medicare Part B
premium, a savings of $104.90 per
month, for qualified individuals.
Recipients may also qualify for
an average annual savings of
$3,900 on Medicare Part D premi-
ums and prescriptions with a low
income subsidy. In addition to dis-

war; and now, they eat dinner to-
gether on Bendels front porch a
few times a week.
We eat dinner together and
then we come out to the front
porch to sit and talk, Bendel said.
We would love to do it every
night, but the weather isnt always
good and my husband doesnt
want to cook every single night.
They began this ritual four
years ago, when Stackhouses
husband passed away. The two
have always been close, but their
relationship has grown in these
last four years.
Its great sitting back and talk-
ing with someone youve known
for so long, Bendel said. And its
fun talking about all the history
we see on Main Street. She has
seen just as much change as I
have, and now we get to look out
on all the changes and just talk
and remember. It is very peace-
ful.
Whether its stories about the
town jail that used to be next door
to her house or the First United
Methodist Church that is now a
bank, the two have seen quite a
lot in their time. And they are not
sure where Moorestown will go in
the future.
I hope they cut down on the
building and leave some green
spaces, but Im not sure, Bendel
said. No matter what, though,
Moorestown will always be a
beautiful place and its been won-
derful watching it from my front
porch.
Special to The Sun
Bertha Brown Bendel, right, and friend Mazie Stackhouse watch
Moorestown life go by from Bendels front porch.

mits. While it isnt one of the
most difficult hikes in the world,
the sheer size of the mountain
makes it daunting.
A lot of people dont consider
the hike up Kilimanjaro that diffi-
cult, Sowa said. It doesnt re-
quire a lot of technical climbing
ability, but that doesnt mean its
not tough. Between the steepness
and the thin air, it was certainly a
tough trek to get to the top.
Sowa went to Kilimanjaro as
part of a tour, hosted by Rustic
Pathways. It took four days to get
to the summit and a day and a
half to get back down.
The trek may have been much
more difficult had Sowa not done
some extensive training before
leaving.
The lack of mountains in
South Jersey made it difficult for
her to find trails to hike, but Sowa
found creative ways to fabricate
the hiking experience.
I filled my backpack with text-
books and walked as much as I
could, she said. I wanted to get
used to the weight of the pack,
and it was a great way to break in
the new boots I bought for the
hike.
Luckily for Sowa, she wasnt
starting from scratch. As a three-
sport athlete at MFS, she is used
to keeping in shape. With that
said, Sowa took her training to a
new level by hiking a half
marathon to get herself into
peak shape before heading to
Africa.
I ran in the Disney Princess
half marathon in February to
make sure I was going to be ready
for the hike, she said. After that,
I just went back to my usual rou-
tine on the Stair Master.
Now that the hike is over, Sowa
is getting back to her normal life
with friends and the beach. But,
her trip up one of the worlds
highest mountains is an experi-
ence that is hard to get over.
Being on top of that mountain
is something I will always keep
with me, she said. Seeing the
world from up there makes you
think about things in a different
way.
