2.3 SummaryofCourse

Thisisafirstlevelcorporatefinancecoursethatlooksattheessentialaspectsoffinancialdecision
making.Thecoursebeginswiththedifferentwaysinwhichcompaniescanbestructuredandthe
differingtypesofownershipthatexist.Thereafter,theprinciplesandapplicationsoffinancial
mathematicsareintroducedandusedtovaluesecuritiesandinvestmentdecisions.Portfoliotheory
isusedtoprovideafoundationfordeterminingtherelationshipbetweenexpectedriskandreturns
infinancialandrealassetinvestments.Dividendpayoutsandthechoicesbetweendebtandequity
financing,includingmethodsofdeterminingthecostofcapital,arealsocovered.Further,thiscourse
includesanalysisoftheinfluenceofthecapitalmarketenvironment,theimplicationsoffinancial
risk,taxationandtheconflictofinterestbetweenmanagersandinvestorsonthevalueand
operationofbusinesses.

Thecoursedevelopsdistinctconceptualframeworksandspecializedtoolsforsolvingrealworld
financialproblemsatboththepersonalandcorporatelevel.Illustrationsfromreallifecorporate

equity,publicfloats,andthepricingofassetsinthestockmarket.

2.4 CourseAimsandRelationshiptoOtherCourses

FINS1613isoneoftwogatewaycoursestotheelectivesinthefinancestream.Itprovidesa
foundationforunderstandingfinancialdecisionmakingandvaluationwhichyouwillneedforour
advancedfinanceclasses,aswellastocontributeasafinanceprofessionalupongraduation.

Therearenoprerequisitesorcorequisitesforthiscourse.
2.5 StudentLearningOutcomes

Uponcompletionofthiscourse,studentsshould:

1. Befamiliarwiththebasicfinancialdecisionmakingandvaluationconcepts;
2. Be able to solve problems involving valuation and assessment of relevant risks in corporate
decisionmaking.

Tutorial Attendance: You are expected to regularly attend your assigned tutorial classes as they
contributetotheunderstandingoflecturematerialthroughasmallgroupsetting.Youarerequired
to attend at least 80% of the tutorials to be eligible for special consideration and a role will be
distributedforyoutosign.WARNING:Nocreditwillbegivenforattendanceattutorialsotherthan
thatinwhichyouareenrolled.

Tutorial Participation: You are expected to prepare detailed answers to the set tutorial problems
BEFORE attending tutorials. You will be called upon on a random basis throughout the tutorial
streamtopresentanswerstothe class.Youwill be assessedonthesepresentationsandtheclarity
of your discussion. Students who do not participate in tutorial discussion will not have the
opportunity of scoring maximum marks for tutorials. Your attendance in class will also affect this
componentofyourgrade.

MidtermExam(40%):Themidtermexaminationisa2.0hourclosedbookexamination(noreading
time) covering the 1
st
of the semester (textbook readings, lecture notes and other assigned
readings).Itconsistsofquestionsandproblemsinamultiplechoiceformat.

Final Examination (50%): The final examination is a 2.0hour closed book examination (no reading
time) covering all course material (textbook readings, lecture notes and other assigned readings)
with a stronger emphasis on the 2
nd
of the semester. It consists of questions and problems in a
multiplechoice format. A passing grade of 50% is required in the final examination. Students who
failtomeetthiscriterionwillbedeemedtohavefailedthecourseattheend,irrespectiveoftutorial
andmidtermexammarksearned.

Ifyoufailtosittheexaminationatthescheduledtime,thereisNOguaranteethatasupplementary
examinationwillbeprovided.Poorclassattendance(lessthan80%)issufficientjustificationforthe
refusaloffinalassessment.

TheAustralianSchoolofBusinessProgramLearningGoalsreflectwhatwewantallstudentstoBEor
HAVE by the time they successfully complete their degree, regardless of their individual majors or

Youcandemonstrateyourachievementofthesegoalsbythespecificoutcomesyouachievebythe
end of your degree (e.g. be able to analyse and research business problems and propose well
justified solutions). Each course contributes to your development of two or more program learning

3. Applications will not be accepted by teaching staff. The lecturerincharge will be

4. Decisions and recommendations are only made by lecturersincharge (or by the Faculty
PanelinthecaseofUGfinalexamspecialconsiderations),notbytutors.
5. Applying for special consideration does not automatically mean that you will be granted a
supplementaryexamorotherconcession.
6. Specialconsiderationrequestsdonotallowlecturersinchargetoawardstudentsadditional
marks.

ASBPolicyonrequestsforSpecialConsiderationforFinalExamsinUndergraduateCourses:
The policy of the School of Banking and Finance is that the lecturerincharge will need to be
satisfiedoneachofthefollowingbeforesupportingarequestforspecialconsideration:

1.Doesthemedicalcertificatecontainallrelevantinformation?Foramedicalcertificateto
be accepted, the degree of illness, and impact on the student, must be stated by the
medicalpractitioner(severe,moderate,mild).Acertificatewithoutthiswillnotbevalid.
2. Has the student performed satisfactorily in the other assessment items? Satisfactory
performance would require at a composite grade of at least 50% at the time of
considerationandmeetingtheobligationtohaveattended80%oftutorials.
3. Does the student have a history of previous applications for special consideration? A
history of previous applications may preclude a student from being granted special
consideration.

SpecialConsiderationandtheFinalExam:
ApplicationsforspecialconsiderationinrelationtothefinalexamareconsideredbyanASBFaculty
panel to which lecturersincharge provide their recommendations for each request. If the Faculty
panel grants a special consideration request, this will entitle the student to sit a supplementary
examination.Nootherformofconsiderationwillbegranted.Thefollowingprocedureswillapply:

1. Supplementary exams will be scheduled centrally and will be held approximately two
weeks after the formal examination period. The dates for ASB supplementary exams for
Semester2,2014are:

Ifastudentlodgesaspecialconsiderationforthefinalexam,theyarestatingtheywillbe
availableontheabovedates.Supplementaryexamswillnotbeheldatanyothertime.
2. Where a student is granted a supplementary examination as a result of a request for
specialconsideration,thestudentsoriginalexam(ifcompleted)willbeignoredandonly
themarkachievedinthesupplementaryexaminationwillcounttowardsthefinalgrade.
Failuretoattendthesupplementaryexamwillnotentitlethestudenttohavetheoriginal
exampapermarkedandmayresultinazeromarkforthefinalexam.

If you attend the regular final exam, you are extremely unlikely to be granted a supplementary
exam.Henceifyouaretooilltoperformuptoyournormalstandardintheregularfinalexam,you
arestronglyadvisednottoattend.However,grantingofasupplementaryexaminsuchcasesisnot
automatic.Youwouldstillneedtosatisfythecriteriastatedabove.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT:
1. You are recorded by the University as being correctly enrolled in all your courses.
2. You have successfully completed all prerequisite courses. Any work done in courses for which prerequisites
have not been fulfilled will be disregarded (unless an exemption has been granted), and no credit given or
grade awarded.
3. You abide by key dates:

July is the first day of Semester 2 lectures.
Sunday 3
rd
August is the last day you can change your enrolment and timetable via myUNSW, and is also
the due date for Semester 2 fees.
Sunday 31

August (end Week 5) is the last day to discontinue without financial penalty (census date).
Applications to start FEE-HELP must also be lodged well before this date.
Sunday 14
th
September (end Week 7) is the last day to discontinue without academic penalty.
4. You organise your affairs to take account of examination and other assessment dates where these are
known. Be aware that your final examination may fall at any time during the semesters examination period.
The scheduling of examinations is controlled by the University administration. No early examinations are
possible. The examination period for Semester 2, 2014, falls between 7

5. When the final examination timetable is released on 26

September, ensure that you have no clashes or
unreasonable difficulty in attending the scheduled examinations.
