This assignment is designed for you to gain a greater appreciation of corrosion in
engineering and its impact on society.

Your task is to find a metal structure that is corroding either on the Clayton or Sunway
campus (note that here metal also includes metal alloys). There are no restrictions on
what the corroding structure is, just as long as it is currently in use (not rubbish) and is the
property of the University.

Once you have selected your corrosion case study, write a report with the following
headings, which answer each of the questions below. Your report must be a maximum of
four A4 pages, 12 size font, including pictures and references. You will not necessarily be
penalised for submitting a report less than 4 pages just as long as you answer the
questions adequately.

Q1. Identification of component/structure and its environment [11 marks]

i) Describe the corroding structure its state and condition, with the help of a photograph
and identify its location on campus (the photograph is required in your report). Is it located
outdoors or indoors? [1 mark]

ii) What is the function of the structure? [1 mark]

iii) Describe the immediate environment of the structure. [1 mark]

iv) Using the CES Edu Pack (Level 2 Database), make a suggestion of what the corroding
metal/alloy could be. [2 marks]

(v) Discuss why the metal/alloy was selected for this particular application. [2 marks]

(vi) Suggest a possible processing method used in the manufacture of the material/
structure. [2 marks]

(vii) Suggest an alternative material for the structure [2 marks]

[Hint: also use the internet and/or textbooks to check if the metal is typically used for this
application. Please reference these sources of information at the end of your assignment.]

Q2. Description of the corrosion process [6 marks]

i) Using knowledge gained from the course lectures/tutorials/labs, discuss the possible
types of corrosion processes and explain the reasons for your assessment. Explain why
multiple mechanisms (and not single forms) of corrosion generally occur in practice. [4
marks]

ii) Draw a picture to help illustrate the multiple corrosion processes taking place. [2 marks]

Q3 Corrosion prevention [6 marks]

i) In your opinion, was corrosion taken into consideration in the design of and material
selection for the structure? Explain your reasons. [2 marks]

ii) What type of corrosion prevention system was initially implemented and why is it failing?
[2 marks]

iii) Discuss why this particular corrosion prevention process was implemented. [2 marks]

Q4 Corrosion assessment and recommendations [7 marks]

i) Taking into consideration the potential risks to people and other assets of the University
suggest whether the corrosion of the structure should be monitored? If so, propose a
monitoring protocol and schedule. [2 marks]

ii) Make an assessment of the potential remnant life time of the structure, keeping in mind
the geographic and climatic conditions. [2 mark]

What would be your recommendations (consider materials, design solutions, etc) to the
University if the lifetime of the structure were to last [1 mark each]
a) 5 years
b) 20 years
c) 50 years
