FOREWORD
Our tradition of excellence began over 100 years ago when the University of St.Gallen was
established in 1898 as a business academy in the heyday of the embroidery industry. The EMBA
HSG celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012 and is the rst and most successful EMBA in the
German-speaking area. Building upon this tradition, we are honored to offer the IEMBA HSG -
a general management education for the newest generation of international managers.
Our Tradition of Excellence & the IEMBA HSG
In todays volatile and demanding global economic environment, executives must confront more
complex challenges than ever before. At the same time, these challenges offer new exciting
opportunities for smart, motivated and passionate individuals in large multinational companies,
as well as in small businesses and startups.
At the University of St.Gallen, our goal is to educate and inspire responsible and effective leaders
who act in a sustainable manner and have the drive to tackle current challenges and opportunities.
We educate executives who perform competently on the international stage and aim to create
long-term impact.
The World is Changing. Lead the Way.
Our IEMBA HSG provides a solid foundation in General Management, combined with a focus on
International Business, Personal Development and Sustainability. Participants come from different
countries, educational and cultural backgrounds and have diverse industry proles and roles. By
combining their broad portfolio of experiences and knowledge, a unique learning environment can
be created for each individual participant. After completion of the IEMBA HSG, graduates will join
the international and closely networked community of managers as alumni of the HSG, holding
the title Executive MBA HSG.

combined with a focus on International Business, Leadership, Personal Development and Sustainability.

PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS
You will nd that in our Executive MBA programs you learn as much
from your peers and colleagues as from your professors and guest
speakers. Therefore, in the Executive MBA programs at the University
of St.Gallen, we consciously recruit classes with a very heterogenous
prole in terms of nationalities, industries, functions, and education.
The average class profiles of our Executive MBA programs are
summarized on this page.
The diversity of our classes is fueled by and strongly benets from the
Swiss business environment. A number of prominent multinational
companies call Switzerland home, and Swiss companies are extremely
competitive in the global market. Such an economy demands a diverse
array of highly competent and skilled individuals. Executive MBA
students at the University of St.Gallen are internationally-minded
individuals who have experience of working and living in more than
one country. They possess extraordinary skills and competencies
and are admitted on the basis of their motivation, accomplishments,
potential, and interpersonal skills.

Having spent an equal amount of my life in India and
developed markets like the USA and Europe, I am able
to appreciate the opposites and the lack of understanding
most executives in the developed markets have on
emerging countries. The HSG IEMBA program allows
me to get practical experience in the emerging markets,
talks and insights from industry leaders, the political
environment and much more closer to reality of business
in BRICs.
For our new IEMBA HSG, we will continue our tradition of heterogenous class proles. However,
all IEMBA HSG students will have something in common: a desire to competently tackle
international challenges, to excel in their professional lives, and to further develop their
personality and networks. We strongly believe that knowledge empowers, and therefore, we aim
to provide our participants with an education that will empower them to strive for even their most
ambitious personal and professional goals in a rapidly changing world. During the course of the
program, participants will have ample opportunities to strengthen their international networks
and to interact with their fellow students in both professional and social settings.

Convenient Location in the Heart of Europe
The City of St.Gallen
Located in the east of Switzerland and founded in the 7th century, the
City of St.Gallen unites tradition and modernity and offers many cultural,
architectural, and historical attractions. In the center of St.Gallen, the Abbey
and its world-famous library are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy
the vibrant history of the city by strolling through the charming streets of
the old town lined with many cozy restaurants and bars. With the advent of
the embroidery industry in the 15th century, St.Gallen established itself as a
center for commercial knowledge, and the town has remained modern and
cosmopolitan ever since.
The majority of the IEMBA HSG modules take place on the Executive Campus
of the University of St.Gallen. The campus is a unique haven for learning and
is situated in a quiet area with a breathtaking view. It has modern seminar
rooms, group meeting rooms, a library, a copy room, a restaurant, a coffee bar,
a spacious terrace, an underground parking garage, and a locker room with
showers for sports.
All the meeting rooms and seminar rooms are equipped with the most recent
technology. The open architecture of the building is designed to create an
inviting atmosphere for learning. Spacious, light-lled rooms and glass
walls provide an outstanding view of the natural landscape that not only
enhances concentration and focus during lectures but also provides a relaxed
environment before and after lectures.

INTERNATIONAL MODULES
11
High potential executives must think globally, but lessons in the lecture hall cannot replace rst-
hand experience. For this reason, our curriculum also includes international modules: 3 out of 8
core modules take place outside of Switzerland.
The goal of the international modules is to sharpen and enhance students understanding of the
economic environment and business systems of important economic markets, to provide exposure
to business practices through eld visits and interactions with managers operating in the respective
countries, and to develop skills in assessing the business environment in regions beyond students
home countries. The overall focus is on Doing Business, a practice-oriented, hands-on approach
to getting to know new business environments and learning how to tackle international business
challenges and opportunities. Students learn through company visits, networking events, case
studies, and presentations by local experts.
GERMANY, UNITED KINGDOM,
BRAZIL & ARGENTINA
The rst two international modules will take place in Europe, where students will have courses in
Germany and the UK. These modules will contain regular courses on general management with
faculty from St.Gallen and the international academic partners, but will also have a strong focus
on the respective destinations. Germany has the largest population of any EU country and has, in
spite of the European crisis, a particularly strong, export-oriented economy. The UK, on the other
hand, is known as the nancial epicenter of Europe and historically has an economy with a strong
global outreach. Both countries, like Switzerland, are home to many important multinational
companies, but also provide a fruitful environment for small and medium sized enterprises as well
as startups in the New Economy.
In the South American international module, students will go to Brazil and Argentina. This last
module of the IEMBA HSG program will focus purely on International Management and will
allow students to get to know the economy, the political system and the culture of the respective
countries. Characterized by large and well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing,
and service sectors, Brazils economy outweighs that of other South American countries. Brazil
often serves as the Latin American hub for European and US business activities. In comparison,
Argentina is an example of a politically and economically fragile country, which nevertheless
offers tremendous business opportunities. Thus participants learn how to cope with different
cultural, economic and political circumstances and how to successfully do business in these
promising markets.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The International Executive MBA HSG in General Management consists of core courses, electives,
and a personal development program, as well as the writing of a Masters thesis. While most
modules take place in St.Gallen, some modules take students to international destinations. The
core courses are spread over eight modules which take place every two to three months over a
period of one and a half years. Each module lasts eight days starting on Monday and nishing on
Tuesday of the following week.
Core modules include two courses and half a day of personal development training as well as social
events, speaker series, and sport activities. During off-campus sessions, students study remotely
by means of e-learning tools, group assignments, business projects, and essays that complement
the on-campus sessions.
In order to excel, the next generation of executives will require not only comprehensive general
management knowledge and skills, but also the vision and leadership necessary to tackle pressing
contemporary challenges such as globalization and sustainability. The core courses will provide
each student regardless of academic or professional background, with a solid foundation in general
management subjects such as nance, strategy, and economics from an international perspective.
Additional core courses will supplement this foundation with an understanding of international
business, sustainability, and leadership development.

Students are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in areas of special interest through
the elective courses. There are several elective courses designed and tailored to complete the
curriculum of the IEMBA HSG. Participants are required to sign up for two electives during the 18
months period of the IEMBA HSG.
All core courses will provide an international perspective on general management and will address
issues of sustainability in different management functions. Further, the courses are designed for
executives to enhance and train their leadership capabilities and qualications. These focal themes
of international business, sustainability and leadership development will also be covered in specic
core modules in order to complement the general management education of our graduates.
Electives
The IEMBA HSG places a special emphasis on personal development training, addressing
topics such as team building, presentation skills, personal efficiency management, vitality
management, and leadership development. The modules outside of Switzerland will also
include Doing business in courses, which include guest speakers, company visits and
business receptions that will help participants to gain a clearer idea of doing business in
the country concerned and to broaden their intercultural and international management
competencies.

SAMPLE COURSES
After taking this course, executives will be able to analyze
the factors that move competitive markets and draw out
their implications for rms. Moreover, the course will
examine the causes of nancial crises so that executives

identifying those changes that are most relevant to their
rm and sector.
Economics for Executives
The course provides an integrated understanding of
the main subject matters of corporate nance and the
key aspects of value-oriented nancial decision making
within corporations. It is vital to understand how nancial
management interacts with corporate strategy and which
issues have to be taken into consideration when engaging
in nancially relevant transactions. Strong emphasis is
placed on rm valuation and corporate transactions, on
the capital structure decision and related dividend policy
as well as on the challenges and instruments of long-term

THE ART
OF LEADERSHIP
This module provides a comprehensive, cross-functional
perspective on entrepreneurship with an interface to
several management disciplines. The course is designed
to provide each student with the best practice of the
entrepreneurial methods and the conceptual knowledge
for the development of sound business models.
Entrepreneurship
20
It is a key objective of the IEMBA HSG to provide students with an integrated
perspective on general management and international business challenges.
This practice-oriented course will revisit key concepts and insights discussed
earlier in the program, and will relate these to complex and executive decisions.
The last module of the course takes place in St.Gallen and will use a mixture of
online simulations, case studies, class discussion and lectures.
Integrative Management
This course provides an introduction to European economic governance in
the capital of the most important country in the Eurozone, namely Germany.
Economic governance focuses on different parts of the economy. At the
macro level, there is concern about budget balances, expenditure growth,
and debt burdens. At the micro level, labour market rigidities, the quality
of the education system, and the ability of Europe to provide research
and development in both the public and private sectors are a focus. The
students explore how policy is made and executed at different levels of
government, with a focus on recent experiences in the Eurozone as well as
what these experiences mean for countries not in Eurozone and/or not in the
European Union.
European Economic Governance
The International Accounting course introduces students to how accounting
systems are structured, the parts of the nancial statements (balance sheet,
income statement, cash ow statement, notes, etc.), and which information
can be provided. The main focus will be on the interpretation of nancial
information and annual reports. The preparation of nancial statements takes a
subordinate role; however, part of the introduction provides an understanding
of nancial reporting. The main conceptual subject matter will be presented
through lectures, literature and case studies.
International Accounting
Succeeding in the global village requires more than a good product and
conventional tenets of business administration. Modern management
reects upon and consciously incorporates ndings of transcultural research
and scholarship. In this module, we will set out to capture the BRICs
conceptually, discuss the opportunities and risks of economic engagement in
the different regions, and address transcultural aspects of business relations
for practitioners.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
24
Since sustainable success cannot be fueled by hard
business knowledge alone, the Personal Development
Program trains the communication and leadership
competence needed by managers to complement
an extensive general management knowledge. In the
face of increasing globalization, todays international
managers increasingly work in multicultural teams and
are confronted with very heterogenous cultures, customs,
and practices when doing business globally. This makes
a mastery of soft skills more important than ever. As
such, the training of soft skills is integrated into the
IEMBA HSG program in order to develop managers with
intellectual exibility and intercultural qualications.
The Personal Development Program includes seminars of
approximately half of a day that are incorporated into each
module. Examples of skills addressed include:
Team Building
Personal Efficiency Management
Presentation Skills
Leadership Development
Vitality Management
In addition to in-class seminars and training sessions in the
classroom, you can benet from individualized one-on-one
coaching support in the areas of career development and
leadership. During the regular studies, you will also meet
international business leaders as a part of lectures, case
studies, and company visits. We offer you the opportunity
to learn from experienced and successful managers in
order to imbue your career with new inspiration.
Last but not least, we offer a broad variety of sports
activities during the on-campus sessions which enable
you to stay in shape during your studies.
