The 1st Annual LHH NYC Creative Networking Contest Winners
Thanks to all who submitted your wonderfully creative ideas for networking and now let’s share the
top entries:
1. Marleen Levi – She used a volunteer position helping out with guest registration and raffles
for the annual Veterans Holiday Party to facilitate an opportunity to network face-to-face
with a Queens Councilman. The registration desk provided the interaction platform and now
they’ve set a follow-up meeting.
2. Saadiah Freeman – Her suggestion was to “start a group for job seekers in your industry
on Meetup.com” and “organize a fun, budget conscious social event to shake off the job
hunting blues…”
3. Brain Albin – He suggested attending trade shows and conventions held at venues like the
Javits Center. Brian also shared the following resources to help with networking efforts:
Here are some other things that have been working for me.
• Of course, LHH resources!!! Great way to start the journey if you have to....
• Watch where people land and find out the HR person(s) they worked with at the company
they work for now. Use this as an in to speak with someone directly and bypassing the
automated scanning and scoring of your resume.
• Keyword addendum in your resume (see mine as an example) -- A keyword addendum is a
way to increase your automated score during the screening process. It is an additional
page on your resume that includes all the keywords highlighted in the body of your
formatted resume. So, you can get at least twice the score for topics companies are looking
for. For example, the word "collaboration" is likely to appear in the body of your resume. It
should also appear in the keyword addendum and therefore, doubles your score for that
word.
• Trade/Industry Associations - for me this includes:
o ARMA - http://www.arma.org - Association of Records Managers and
Administrators. I am a member of the NYC chapter and use these meeting to maintain
contacts and awareness of record and content management industry trends.
o AIIM - http://www.aiim.org - Association for Information and Image Management -
they hold a huge trade show annually in March/April (Philadelphia, PA) and smaller
quarterly shows around the country. Each of these shows is represented by large and
small vendors having presence in this space

You're Only Kidding Yourself
I've been unemployed in my career. Twice. So what I'm about to say is based as much on personal
experience as it is on a lifetime of studying the best practices in career self-management. There's a
single, profound truth in hunting for a job: you're only kidding yourself if you think it will be quick and
easy. It won't.
Whether the economy is in recession or firing on all cylinders, whether you're starting out in your
career or have years of experience under your belt, whether you're a skilled tradesperson or a senior
executive, looking for a decent employment opportunity is the hardest job you will ever have. It will
take every bit of knowledge you can muster, every insight you can gain, every piece of wisdom you
can acquire, and even then, it will take pluck, determination and plenty of hard work.
That's why I was absolutely stunned to see the results of a 2008 poll taken by Alan Krueger and
Andreas Mueller and reported recently in The Economist. They found that unemployed workers in the
U.K., Sweden and Germany devote 10 minutes or less per day looking for a job. That's people who
are unemployed mind you. They either believe they are entitled to a job-wishful thinking in today's
global economy-or that pixie dust will make it happen for them-the employment equivalent of buying
a lottery ticket.
Job search efforts were better in Spain and France, but nowhere near what's required for success.
Unemployed workers in those countries spent 20 to 30 minutes per day searching for a new job. And
in the U.S., the survey found that unemployed workers spent barely 40 minutes per day looking for a
new employment opportunity. That's less time than average American spends watching television

around the world.
(4.7 hours) or getting showered and dressed each day (53 minutes).

So What?

Most of us will spend one-third or more of our lives at work. Doesn't it make sense, therefore, to
invest the time necessary to get it right? Isn't it worth the effort to acquire a knowledge of the key
principles and skills of effective job searching and then to practice them rigorously until you land a
good job-one that will enable you to excel? Aren't you more likely to see a real and sustainable return
on such an investment in yourself and your future than you are in an investment with (allegedly)
smart stock market analysts?

So, why do so many of us sell ourselves and our careers short? Why are we spending so little time in
the one wealth creation activity we can actually profit from and control?

A Matter of Misunderstanding

I can't say what's behind the less than vigorous efforts of workers in other countries, but in the U.S., I
think it comes from a misunderstanding of the Declaration of Independence. That wonderful
document, of course, defines our culture. It establishes our expectations both in our neighborhood
and in the workplace. And subconsciously, many of us believe that the Declaration of Independence
guarantees us Life, Liberty and Happiness. It doesn't. It entitles us to our Life, our Liberty and our
pursuit of Happiness.

The word "pursuit" may be a noun, but it describes a state of action. The act of striving for
something-in this case: Happiness. In other words, the Declaration of Independence accords us the
opportunity to strive for a fulfilling and rewarding job-and despite its all too obvious faults, the U.S.
delivers on that promise better than any other country on the face of the earth-but it's up to us to do
so. To take the steps that will achieve our goal. To turn the potential for personal success and
happiness into reality. To create our own version of the American Dream.

Yes, there will always be exceptions to the rule. There will always be the lucky handful among our
peers who have a great job drop in their lap. But for most of us, finding that job-a job that will engage
and fulfill us-requires that we invest a meaningful level of time and effort. What's meaningful? Think
of it as an equivalency. The Happiness you derive from a job search is equal to the personal
commitment you make to execute it. So, give yourself a full 8 hours of Happiness each day on-the-
job by spending a full 8 hours each day searching for the job that will enable you to do so.

Jobless Claims Drop

In what might be considered a silver lining after months, the number of claims for first-time jobless
benefits fell sharply by 94,000 last week, according to the US Department of Labor.
EmploymentCrossing, a US-based job board, added 50,000 jobs on Thursday and has proven to be
the most effective way of finding jobs in this downturn. For the week that ended December 27, 2008,
the first-time applications for unemployment benefits fell to 492,000 from the 26-year high of 586,000
claims, a week earlier. The Labor Department cited the Christmas holiday season as an explanation
for the drop. "Although the claims for unemployment filings have decreased, this does not give an
accurate picture of the unemployment status, unless the holiday season is over," says Harrison
Barnes, founder and CEO of EmploymentCrossing. Meanwhile, the continuing claims for jobless
benefits increased to 4.51 million from 4.37 million in the week ending December 20, 2008, the
highest in 26 years. "In the present times, it is best for professionals to hold on to their current
positions. Those unemployed are facing a great difficulty in finding new jobs," adds Barnes. "Since
the recession began in December 2007, the economy has lost nearly 2 million jobs. In December
2007, EmploymentCrossing listed about 500,000 jobs, which has now increased to over 1.5 million.
So, although the recession has affected the economy, EmploymentCrossing has considerably

increased its efforts to research, classify, and list every job position from each and every source,"
says CEO Harrison Barnes…

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 90…)

The New Year Blitz…
By all accounts, the 2009 economy is shaping up to be even more challenging than 2008. That’s a
daunting task even by economist’s standards but the concrete signs are already there so the “scout
motto” is probably the best strategy – “Be prepared”. Take full advantage of every opportunity
presented to you and a few that aren’t. In other words, get creative and make some opportunities for
yourself. Use all of the resources of your search program: CRN, JSWT, networking groups,
seminars, Coach Consultants, video interviewing, etc… to keep yourself in ready mode. There are
lots of employment opportunities out there but there are many more Candidates and even more
joining the fray daily which means that window closes much faster than it used to. There’s no time
for second guessing. Go for it now and remember, “having an offer is not the same as having a job”.
So until you accept and actually begin working, all options are still open…
