Test (14/03/2014) Max Marks: 40
Note: Answer any 2 full questions.
1.a) Define the following terms with examples
(i) Kinematic link, (ii) Kinematic pair, (iii) Kinematic chain (iv) Inversion of a kinematic chain
(04)
b) Determine the mobility of the mechanisms shown in fig below:

Fig b(1) Fig b(2) Fig b(3)
(06)
c) Sketch and explain: i) Radial or Disc cams & ii) Globoidal Cams (04)
d) Explain with neat sketches the different classifications of a follower. (06)
2. Construct the profile of a cam to suite the following specifications: i) Cam shaft diameter = 40mm, ii)
Least radius of cam = 25mm, iii) Diameter of roller = 25mm, iv) Angle of Lift = 120, v) Angle of Fall
= 150 vi) Lift of the follower = 40mm. Two pauses of equal intervals are there between the motions.
During the lift the motion is SHM. During the fall motion is UARM. The speed of cam shaft is uniform.
The line of stroke is 12.5mm to the left from the center of the cam. Also calculate the maximum
velocities & accelerations of the follower during both ascent & descent.
(20)
3. A cam rotates at a uniform speed of 300 rpm clockwise and gives an oscillating follower (75mm long),
an angular displacement of 35 in each stroke. The follower is fitted with a roller of 20mm diameter
which makes constant contact with the cam. The outward & inward displacements each, of the follower
occupies 140 and 100 respectively of the cam rotation and there is no dwell in the lifted position. The
follower moves throughout with SHM. The axis of the fulcrum is 80mm from the cam axis & the least
distance of roller axis from cam axis is 40mm. Draw the cam profile to full scale.
