An American Committee for the Study of War Documents was established in 195 5
as a
private group of scholars interested in docu-
mentary research and especially in the microfilming of records of foreign origin kept in American depositories. In 195 6, the American
Committee " became a committee of the American Historical Association*. Its present chairman is Professor Oron J. Hale, University of
Virginia, who was preceded "by Dean Reginald H. Phelps, Harvard University, and Professor Lynn M. Case, The University of Pennsylvania.
An initial Ford Foundation grant and additional funds provided " b y the Old Dominion Foundation, the Lilly Endowment and the Avalon Founda-
tion enabled the Committee to undertake the cataloguing and microfilming of declassified German records in the custody of the World War II
Records Division of the National Archives (previously TAGO, Departmental Records Branch), at Alexandria, Virginia.
The plans for screening and microfilming these materials were prepared "by a Subcommittee on Microfilming under the chairmanship
to the end of 195 6 of Professor E. Malcolm Carroll, Duke University, and his successor, Dr. Fritz T. Epstein, The Library of Congress.
The microfilming team in Alexandria, Virginia, was under the direction of Professor Gerhard L. Weinberg of the University of Michigan

P R E F A C E
This Guide is one of a series of finding aids describing those declassified German records deposited at the World War II Records Division,
Hational Archives, which have " been microfilmed " by the Microfilming Project of the Committee for the Study of War Documents of the American
Historical Association. The Guide contains tne text of data sheets identifying records filmed* A copy of the data sheets has " been filmed as
a target sheet at the beginning of each roll of film*.
The present Guide covers forty-eight rolls of film of records of the National Socialist German Labor Party* The material described in
the Guide is composed of a considerable variety of documentation, attesting to the manifold activities of the NSDAP and its affiliated organi-
zations. The bulk of the files pertain to intra-party affairs on the national, regional and local levels and concerns political indoctrination,
HSFO training, propaganda operations, Jevdsh persecution, foreign labor recruitment, and a host of other matters. The documentation is rather
uneven and the researcher is reminded that very considerable additional 1TSDAP material is described in Guides 3 a^d 2 0.
The terms " Serial" and " Roll

in this Guide refer to the sequence of the film. The " Item" number is the identification symbol on the
original folder within the captured records collection. " Provenance

indicates, where ascertainable, the archival origin of the documents
whose description follows. The symbol " FT" means that the folder has been filmed throughout, the symbol " FS" denotes that the folder has been
filmed selectively* " 1st frame" gives tbe frame number of the first page of the folder* Every exposure has been given a frame number con-
secutively throughout the filming operation. German file numbers, whenever ascertainable, have also been included. The " Hotes" provide a
general idea of the nature of the materials but should not be taken as exhaustive descriptions. The researcher is urged to check the entire Guide.
The original records have been returned to the Federal Republic of Germany. The microfilms are deposited in the National Archives,
Washington 2 5 , D.C. , as microcopy T-S1, rolls 638-685 , and should be reauested by adding " T-Sl" Part III to the rolls desired. The descrip-

correspondence generally related to building activities, buildings,,
rents and the importation of building materials; included is also
extremely varied correspondence within these categories: letters on
the necessity to regulate the import and export of wood in order to
prevent monopolies, letters concerning the finding of apartments for
HSD.AP members in Berlin, correspondence concerning interminable quar-
rels of tenants in Berlin apartment houses and material on Bausparkas-
sen - encouraging soldiers to save up for investment in new houses
after the war, 19^2.

since Baroness Marschall would have had to pay the prevailing price to regain
the property, she finally decided to forego her right to do so,

reports on anti-Nazi feeling and utterances of the population in the working-
class districts, the behavior of troops defending Vienna, reports on the
strategic situation and the necessity to clear all foreigners out of Vienna,
on Hungarian, Serbian and Croat officers who were contributing neither to
the defense of their own countries nor to the safety of Vienna. The file
also contains a memorandum signed by Bormann on the necessity to return all
German soldiers, in Germany for whatever reason, immediately to the fron#
in view of the desperate military situation* This report, a copy of which
was sent to Klopfer, was written on 2 8 February 19^5
