Discussion of characteristics and skills brought to the mental
health human services arena

As part of the development of your individual papers, Learning

you feel people bring to a career in human services. Topics for the
discussion should include:

Which personal characteristics do you consider essential for a
successful career in human services? Which characteristics
should be considered detrimental?

Are there specific skills which individuals need to have or
develop before employment in the human services field? If so,
which ones?

Where and how can skills be developed to help in the formation
of a successful human services worker?

Is there such a thing as a "natural born helper"?

Describe someone in your life you believe would be an
exemplary human services worker. What characteristics and
skills does he or she possess

Learning Team members will begin online searches for information
on specific programs within the human services field. They may
choose a program in either the private or public sector. Additionally,
they may choose to focus on how the program was designed,
methodologies of the program's service delivery, or how the
program is evaluated.

Discussion Questions

Week One Discussion Questions

Describe the role of the human services worker in facilitating mental health care.

Course Design Guide
BSHS 471 Version 2
12

Describe how the Dohrenwend Model differs from the traditional approach to intervention. Use an example.

Describe the Ecological Model of community psychology and the contributions of the important theorists to
the approach. Using an agency you are familiar with as an example, describe how a case manager might
use this model to increase participation in one of its programs.

Which personal characteristics do you consider essential for a successful career in human services? Which
characteristics should be considered detrimental?

Are there specific skills which individuals need to have or develop before employment in the human
services field? If so, which ones?

Where and how can skills be developed to help in the formation of a successful human services worker?

Describe someone in your life you believe would be an exemplary human services worker. What
characteristics and skills does he or she possess?

Week Two Discussion Questions

Why is primary prevention preferable to secondary prevention?

Describe the ethical issues in primary prevention and how a human services worker in an agency can avoid
committing ethical errors.

Describe a self-help support system. Review information online and/or interview a coordinator of a local
system in order to address the remaining questions:

o What is the philosophy of the self-help support system?
o What is the target population(s) served?
o What are the functions of the self-help support system?
o How does the system interface with other programs or agencies?
o What is the role (if any) of human services workers at the support system?
o How and by whom are the services of the support system evaluated?
o What are the recent outcomes, both positive and negative, of the self-help support system's services?
o How might the services of the support service be improved?

Week Three Discussion Questions

How might a human services case manager use consultative services?

What is a community needs assessment? What is its purpose?

Describe how a community needs assessment might be performed by an agency.

How is the method of service delivery determined by the agency after a needs assessment has been
made?

How is the delivery of services evaluated for effectiveness by an agency? (That is, how does the agency
ascertain whether the chosen approach is working?) .

Describe the delivery of mental health services at a local agency. Contact someone at the agency that can
tell you what services are offered, how the agency determined the need for those services in the
community, and the process they are using to assess the effectiveness of their mental health services.

What roles do volunteers and trained professional consultants play in provision of crisis intervention
services?

What are the "proactive-preventive models of crisis intervention" and how could they be employed in the
future?

How might the managed care system impact the provision of crisis intervention services?

Why is the idea of networking and collaboration with other agencies becoming so important in the crisis
intervention field?

What are some of the future trends in crisis intervention and how might they impact the human services
worker?

How might communities in the future become involved in the formation of prevention strategies in crisis
intervention?

These questions will form the basis of the individual "Paper on a Future Trend of Crisis Intervention in the
Human Services Delivery System" to be handed in during Week Five.

Week Five Discussion Questions

Discuss the following specific crisis intervention situations by exploring the points listed below:

o Chemical dependency
o Personal loss
o Violent behavior in institutions
