BELIMO ball valve in a compressed air application
(e.g. R225 with NM rotary actuator)
Task
To reduce compressed air leakage losses
in the manufacturing process
Pneumatic devices aid and simplify a wide
variety of manufacturing steps. The production
of the necessary compressed air involves con-
siderable costs. The compressed air is stored
in pressure vessels. At times when there is no
need for the compressed air (e.g. end of pro-
duction), the pneumatic devices have a certain
leakage rate and the vessel either loses pres-
sure, or the compressor starts lling up the
pressure vessel again.
Solution
The solution is to seal the pressure vessel
using a suitable shut-off control device that
allows no air bubbles to escape. Various
BELIMO ball valves with a choice of rotary
actuators are available for this purpose. The
criteria for the design are either the existing
pipe dimensions, or the effective ow rate and
pressure ratio.

at room temperature)

in the below critical range:
Legend: p1 = supply pressure, absolute [kPa]
p2 = downstream pressure, absolute [kPa]
p = pressure difference p1 - p2 [kPa]
Qn = normal cubic meter [Nm3/h]
Payback
To produce 1 m
3
/h compressed air where
the mains pressure is 6 bars costs approxi-
mately 0.01 to 0.03 (source: www.druckluft-
efzient.de). Average consumption is approx-
imately 10 Nm
3
/h. When the production plant
is shut down, the leakage rate is approximately
30%. With a two-shift system, compressed air
consumption per annum is
approximately 200 (working days)
x 10 hours x 10 m3/h x 0.3 (leakage rate)
x 0.02 = 120 .
(The leakage rate refers to the exible con-
nections downstream of the distributor and the
compressed air tools used.)
The payback time per motorized valve is
less than 1.5 years.

Experience
Twenty-two control valves were installed in
the new BELIMO LONGUS building a year
ago and have been functioning perfectly since
then.
The rotary actuators are controlled by
the so-called MP bus. Eight of these
actuators are connected to a LON interface
(UK24LON) using a 2-wire system.
A higher-level LON controller controls all the
BELIMO ball valves as they are needed.
