WEEKEND DIGEST

Monday's edition of Housing Notebook - hosted by Scott Sommer -
will focus on the upcoming March for Affordable Housing. He'll be
joined by community leaders; tune in tomorrow at 8pm on WBAI,
99.5FM.

The Met Council on Housing coauthored a blog for the Huffington
Post about the march, titled "Why New Yorkers Need to March on 8/20
for Real Affordable Housing."

Our executive director, Jaron Benjamin, was a guest on WABC
Radio's "The Ride Home"with Rita Cosby and Pat Kiernan this week.
Fourteen minutes into the show, they discussed the recent NY Daily
News opinion piece about Airbnb's threat to public safety and
affordable housing.

Steven Wishnia - the editor of Met Council on
Housing's Tenant/Inquilino - penned an article in the
Indypendent called "How to Beat Your Landlord."

After Met Council's report (Tax Breaks for Billionaires) sparked an
investigation, only two of the five approved real estate developers
cashed in on the controversial tax abatement. As we said to
the Commercial Observer: "that's two too many."

MARCH
FOR AFFORDABLE
HOUSING ON
WEDNESDAY

Every day, you hear about long-time residents being pushed
out and priced out, often pressured to make way for more
affluent newcomers.
This must stop now! Join thousands of housing activists,
labor union members, and faith leaders in the march to
demand real affordability in NYC.
Tenants like Jerry Archer from East New York are at risk of
being priced out if we dont demand a more responsible
approach to development.
Too many neighborhoods are in danger of being auctioned
off to the highest bidders among the wealthy elite.

Will you join us on 8/20 to fight for our neighborhoods?
WHEN: Wednesday, August 20th 4:30
WHERE: First Corinthian Baptist Church 1912 Adam Clayton
Powell Jr. Blvd (at W116th Street)
On August 20th, we will march with the Real Affordability for
All coalition to push our elected officials to preserve
affordable housing for long-time neighborhood residents!
On 8/20 let's send a clear message to City Hall: New York
City must be affordable and livable for all.

ANTI-AIRBNB
CAMPAIGN

After Wednesday's March for
Affordable Housing, Met Council
and allies will launch an anti-
Airbnb campaign.

The campaign will stop Airbnb's
attempts to worsen this city's historic housing crisis. Last
year, the multi-million dollar tax dodging corporation tried
to gut the Illegal Hotels Law, which prevents landlords from
dismantling our rent regulation system by turning affordable
apartment into hotels.

Recently, Airbnb has poured millions of dollars into an effort
to destroy rent regulations that safeguard what's left of our
city's affordable housing. The corporation has hired field
organizers - and has even secured the services of Bill
Hyers (the former de Blasio campaign manager).

This makes 2015's rent law fight even more important. Not
only are we fighting to renew and strengthen the rent laws,
we will also face attacks to other regulations that keep what's
left of our affordable housing stock intact.
Contact joseph@metcouncilonhousing.org or 347-409-4650
to find out how to get involved in the fight.

SAVE THE DATE -
MET COUNCIL GALA

The Met Council on Housing
will host a gala to honor long
time affordable housing
champions. The gala will be
held at 25 W 18th Street in the
32BJ SEIU auditorium on Friday,
October 24.

In recent years, the Met Council on Housing has re-emerged
as a leader in the fight for affordable housing. We've
assumed leadership roles in the R3 and Real Affordability for
All campaigns, and have held powerful decision makers
accountable while continuing to offer assistance to tenants in
need.

Join us to celebrate our recent successes and prepare for the
sunset of the Rent Laws in 2015. Contact
ilana@metcouncilonhousing.org for more information.
