Back to school fun
A Back to School obstacle
race is planned. PAGE 2

Aaron Himelright is an adven-
ture seeker. After graduating
from Moorestown High School in
2008, he spent the next six years
as a rock climber, which he did
for fun. What he didnt know is
that those six years may have also
served as training for something
that could change his life.
Himelright competed in the tel-
evision show American Ninja
Warrior this year, making it to
the finals in Las Vegas. But, it
wasnt something he thought he
would ever be doing.
One day, I just happened to be
watching television and I saw
Chris Wilczewski on American
Ninja Warrior, Himelright said.
Then, the next day, I saw him in
the gym and we started talking
about the show. Chris invited me
over to a new gym he was starting
and introduced me to a few of the
guys there that were also on the
show.
Wilczewski attended Holy
Cross High School and has also
competed at American Ninja
Warrior. While Himelright did-
nt know him well, the two be-
came instant friends, especially
after Himelright saw the gym he
was opening. It was during this
first visit to the new gym that
Himelright saw the talent he pos-
sessed.
All the guys were racing on
this course that Chris had built at
the gym, he said. Even though I
had never done it before, I decided
to try it out, and I had one of the
fastest times, and thats where
everything started.
Himelright hit the ground run-
ning and began training at the
gym to prepare himself for the
next round of American Ninja
Warrior. After a few months of
training, he headed to St. Louis to
compete in the qualifying round
of the show.
It was a lot more stressful
than it looks, Himelright said.
You have to sit and wait in a tent
all day for them to call your num-
ber, so you have to make sure you
are ready for a long time. And
they do the filming at night so
that way when the show goes on
television, they can run any con-
testant they want first.
Himelright placed second in
the qualifying round and earned
a spot in the finals in Las Vegas.
However, during the six weeks
between the qualifying and the fi-
nals, Himelright suffered a bro-
ken hand, which didnt allow him

between Philadelphia, Moorestown and Mount Laurel depending on the events, which included track
and field, archery, tennis and bowling.
National Veterans Wheelchair Games hit Moorestown
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
The first week of a new school
year is full of excitement new
books, new teachers, maybe even
a new school. This year in
Moorestown, students will have
one more new event to celebrate,
when the Moorestown Township
Public Schools host a Back to
School obstacle race on Sept. 7 at
Moorestown High School.
We are very excited about the
event, Caryn Shaw, a parent vol-
unteer, said. Its going to be a
great way to get kids out and in-
volved during the first week of
the new school year.
The obstacle race will offer two
courses: a mile course for chil-
dren and a 5K course for teens
and adults. The tracks will both
offer age-appropriate obstacles.
We wanted to make the course
tough, but not too difficult, Shaw
said. The object of the race is to
be fun, and we want to bring in as
many people as we can.
Some of the obstacles that will
be included are tires, a comman-
do crawl, hay bales and hurdles.
There will also be cross-fit sta-
tions for the adult course and
some inflatables for the children.
The courses will overlap at
some points, but for the most
part, they will be completely sepa-
rate, Shaw said. Im especially
excited to see the kids go through
the inflatable obstacles.
According to Shaw, the event is
designed to get the community to-
gether. There will be no winners
or prizes, and all the proceeds will
benefit the school district.
We wanted to stay away from
making this a really competitive
event, Shaw said. We are trying
to raise money for the schools,
and everything is going to be
about fun on Sept. 7.
After the race, there will be
games and vendors at the MHS
football field. There will also be
non-profits at the event to raise
money for the community.
The event is a collaborative ef-
fort among the MTPS administra-
tion, staff, teachers and parents,
according to Shaw.
With the budget deficits, we
were looking for a way to raise
some money for the school dis-
trict, she said. We didnt want
to just do another fundraiser, so
we decided to come up with some-
thing fun for the community. It
will give everybody a chance to
come out and celebrate the begin-
ning of a new school year and to
help the kids out by raising some
money.
Registration is now open for
the race. To register, visit
www.mtps.com. The cost is $20
for the one-mile race and $25 for
the 5K. The first 200 registrants
will also receive a free t-shirt.
We are counting on a big
turnout, Shaw said. Its a great
community event, and weve done
everything we can to make it fun
for the whole family. Between the
vendors, the race and all the other
games and activities, we think
weve covered the entire commu-
nity.

to train at all between the events.
I basically went in with no
training, he said. It took the en-
tire six weeks to get the cast off
my hand, so I had to kind of wing
it during the finals.
Even with little training,
Himelright managed to place 12th
at the finals in Las Vegas, a feat
he is proud of, but not satisfied
with.
It was an awesome experience
being out there and competing,
but now Im ready to do better,
he said. The group of guys who
compete in the sport are very sup-
portive, and we all push each
other. The sport is growing slowly,
and with more cross-fit type gyms
popping up, there are more oppor-
tunities to train, too.
Himelright is preparing to
compete in next years American
Ninja Warrior, but in the mean-
time, he is focused on training.
I basically train all day, he
said. I work nine hours a day as
a welder and then hit the gym
when I get home. I will definitely
be ready when the time comes to
compete again next year.

Volunteers help create beauty
throughout Moorestown
After another stroll on Main Street, in
the cool of the evening and enjoying the
unusual low humidity in July and August,
I once again swelled with pride. Pride in
the beauty of our special town, pride in the
historical architecture everywhere and
pride in the incredible efforts of so many
volunteers quietly making Moorestown a
better place to live.
Along my route, I saw plaques showing
where the Moorestown Business Associa-
tion had put in plantings in the streetscape.
Also next to many of the merchants build-
ings were square planters, lovingly planted
by Moorestowns Garden Club with beauti-
ful flowering annuals. Nearer to the curb
were round planters planted and main-
tained by individual Garden Club mem-
bers.
Eyes raised along the way were lush
hanging baskets personally delivered and
reasonably priced by Rich Flagg himself
and hung with additional volunteers, in-
cluding township employees on their lunch
break! These hanging baskets would never
have been put up if it were not the result of
many volunteers spearheaded by Gina
Zegel. In years past, David and Debbie
Hess from the Hess Browning Farm have
also donated plants and hanging baskets
for Main Street.
Our Moorestown volunteers are many,
and as you see the glorious colors from all
the wonderful plantings on Main Street,
pause for a moment and thank the many
who gave and give so much for all of us in
town. Better yet, become a volunteer!

ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our sec-
ond Back to School special section,
which is included inside this issue.
Next week, well have more compre-
hensive back to school coverage, in-
cluding a Q&A with the superintend-
ent of the school district to keep you
informed of all the changes and excite-
ment on the horizon for the 2014-2015
school year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity. Recently, we created an On
Campus section of our paper to do
just that to recognize the hard-work-
ing students in a way that stands out
from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

First, the good. The beautiful
32.9-acre lake and surrounding
park are a beloved natural re-
source enjoyed by many. Surely
you agree that Strawbridge Lake
is a community treasure.
Now, the bad. What if you
learned that even though it cost
close to $4.6 million to dredge the
lake of sediment less than 15
years ago, Strawbridge Lake is in
trouble again? You may wonder
how can this happen? The answer
is lack of management. Its as if
we bought a new car and then
never put oil in it.
It has been 10 years since there
was any real examination of the
lake. However, anyone can see the
lily pads (Spatterdock) all over
the lake. They are unsightly
when covering large areas of the
lake. The phosphorous and nitro-
gen levels must remain in bal-
ance for the lake to remain
healthy. Following the dredging
in 1999, several sediment cham-
bers were installed to catch silt
coming from the side of the lake
facing Route 38, but there is no ev-
idence that they have ever been
maintained. NJDEP recommend-
ed that there remain a barrier of
vegetation between grass and the
lake. This barrier is essential in
preventing erosion, and nutrient
and silt run off, but again, it has
not been maintained.
This certainly isnt the way to
treat a beloved community asset,
which adds so much ambiance
and homeowner value. We dont
just see evidence of poor manage-
ment and lack of leadership at
Strawbridge Lake. It is an on-
going problem in Moorestown.
Town council advisory groups
are appointed by town council it-
self, but more often than not, rec-
ommendations by these groups
fall on deaf ears. No wonder resi-
dents feel disenfranchised. We
have an enormous amount of tal-
ent in these advisory groups, and
their opinions must be taken seri-
ously. When town council lacks
maintenance plans for high value
resources, and fails to seriously
listen to its own advisory groups,
this eventually costs taxpayers
extra money that should not have
to be spent.
As members of council and as
part of our plan for the people, we
will listen and take into account
the recommendations of the
township advisory committees
and the town as a whole.
Moorestown is our treasure, and
we together must make it shine.
Ed George and Elizabeth Endres,
candidates for
Moorestown Council
