Prerequisites
MAT 105
Objectives:
1. To acquaint engineering students with mathematical optimization methods and
their practical application
2. To introduce state of the art techniques for solving practical optimization
problems
3. Introduce methods that are used in modern control systems for Engineering
Applications
4. To implement the optimization algorithms for the solution of practical problems
using MATLAB / SIMULINK

Expected
Outcome:
After the completion of this course students will be able to solve practical Optimization
problem in Engineering using both classical methods and soft computing techniques.
Unit I
Classical Optimization Techniques (9 Hours)
Introduction, single-variable optimization, Multivariable optimization with no constraints,
Multivariable optimization with Equality constraints, Multivariable optimization with
inequality, Convex Programming Problem, Dynamic Programming & gradient method,
Calculus of variation.
Unit II
Evolutionary Computation algorithms (9 Hours)
Introduction to Genetic Algorithm, Evolutionary Programming, Particle Swarm Optimization,
HDE, Bacterial swarming simulated annealing, Tabu search, Application to economic Dispatch,
Unit Commitment, Generation Scheduling and other optimization problems in Engineering,
Advantages and disadvantages.
Unit III
Neutral Networks based optimization (9 Hours)
Introduction to Neural Networks, HNN, BPN algorithms, application of Neural Networks to
Economic Dispatch, Unit Commitment, load forecasting and other optimization problems in
Engineering, Advantages and disadvantages
Unit IV
Optimization of Fuzzy Systems (9 Hours)
Introduction to Fuzzy logic- one dimensional optimization, Application to control system and
solution of nonlinear equations, Advantages and disadvantages.
Unit V
Simulation using Matlab / Simulink (9 Hours)
Introduction to MATLAB optimization tool box, Implementation of different optimization
techniques in MATLAB and C.
