Here is a study guide for the upcoming COMM 1000 Exam 2.

However, if you study the following you should be well prepared for the test. Be sure that you
can answer the following, including definitions of the relevant terms. Dont just memorize
answers. Think of examples and differentiate course concepts from one another.

Be able to characterize communication that maintains relationships. Understand the concept
of relational maintenance

What is the dialectical perspective? What are the assumptions of the dialectical perspective?

Be able to name and describe the 3 main types of relational dialectics.

What are norms? What are roles? What are expected and enacted roles? Know the differences
between inter-role and intra-role conflict.

According to Fitzpatrick, what are the three dimensions on which couples are evaluated in the
marital typology? What are the characteristics of each marital style? Which style tends to be
most satisfied?

Conflict is made up of which 2 elements? What is the Killman-Thomas model of conflict?

What are the various conflict styles? What makes each different?

Be able to define dominance and power. What is the relationship between dominance and

What are conflict avoidance tactics? What are conflict escalation tactics? What are the
