Wiffle Ball Cup
to benefit Perkins
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
When the Perkins Center for
the Arts started looking for a new
way to raise money last summer,
a lot of different ideas were
thrown around. There was an
idea for a 5K run and anoth-
er for a golf outing,
but Paul Canton
was looking to
do something
different.
Be-
cause we
are trying
to raise
money
for
Perkins
Center for
the Arts,
we wanted
to actually
have people
come here,
Canton, event or-
ganizer and Perkins
Center board member, said. In
one of the meetings, a wiffle ball
tournament was brought up, and
it fit right in with what we were
trying to do.
The inaugural Perkins Center
for the Arts Wiffle Ball Cup raised
around $9,000 for Perkins and was
a huge success, according to Can-
ton.
It was awesome seeing every-
one out on the lawn of Perkins
and having fun, Canton said.
We were able to raise a lot of
money, and it was also important
to have people at Perkins. Its
close to the middle of town, but
there are still some people who
dont know were here.
With the success of last years
event, Perkins is set to host the
second annual Wiffle Ball Cup on
Sept. 6.
Things are moving along very
well so far with the event, Can-
ton said. Were expecting to have
more teams than last year and
hopefully have just as much fun.
So far, Perkins has managed to
raise $12,000, which is already
more than it managed to do last
year. According to Canton, its a
sign of just how much people en-
joyed the event last year.
Weve seen a huge amount of
enthusiasm from sponsors and
the teams that have been signing

The Township Council dis-
cussed possible projects at Wesley
Bishop Park and Jeff Young Park
at its meeting on Aug. 18.
The council voted unanimous-
ly to approve a bond ordinance of
$150,000 for preliminary work to
be done at the parks. While the
township will finance the proj-
ects, Thomas Merchel, director of
finance, says the sports clubs that
use them will eventually pay
them for.
Residents in attendance, how-
ever, were hesitant to believe this
agreement between the township
and clubs.
I feel that most of the private
clubs are deadbeats, Edwin Begg
said.
Begg wasnt the only resident
who voiced their opinion on the
matter. Paul Conlow was also
leery about making a deal with
the clubs.
There have already been ver-
bal agreements, Conlow said. If
these agreements were not kept,
that makes a difference and
should be looked into.
Conlow was referring to the
deal that was made with the
sports clubs before 2012 park im-
provements were made. In the
deal, the clubs agreed to pay
money each year to repay the
debt from those improvements.
The current projects that were
approved would see the construc-
tion of athletic fields at Wesley
Bishop and a hockey rink at Jeff
Young.
While both Conlow and Begg
were not in opposition to these
improvements, they were, howev-
er, hesitant about the decision,
considering nothing has been
paid back to the township since
the 2012 improvements.
Mayor Christopher Chiacchio
was not so hesitant, though, and
felt strongly that the clubs would
pay back the money for both proj-
ects.
Were still working out the
payments for the clubs, Chiac-
chio said. We have heard from
them that they will definitely
honor their agreements.
Begg, however, was in favor of
adopting a new policy.
There are roughly 6,000 chil-
dren in these sports programs,
and if each of them were re-
quired to pay a $50 annual fee, we
would be able to raise around
$300,000 a year, Begg said.
While Chiacchio did acknowl-
edge Beggs plan, he did not want
to include any more fees for play-
ers.
In other news:
The township appropriated
$925,000 and authorized the is-
suance of $878,750 in bonds or
notes to be used for the 2015 roads
resurfacing program.
The township appropriated
$330,000 and authorized the is-
suance of $313,500 in bonds or
notes to be used for the purchase
of police vehicles and equipment.
The next Township Council
meeting will be held on Sept. 8 at
7:30 p.m.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the

too short, we salute him for the legacy of
service he leaves behind and for the time
he gave to our community in the

Moorestown Council
As part of its year-long 45th anniver-
sary celebration, Moorestown Ecumeni-
cal Neighborhood Development, Inc., a
private, non-profit, housing development
organization, recently hosted a Donor
Appreciation Event at The Moorestown
Community House to honor its long-time
donors.
MEND would not be where it is today
if it were not for our supportive donors
and board members, says Matt Reilly,
president and CEO of MEND.
Because of their continuous generosi-
ty, Reilly continued, our past, present
and future residents have had and will
continue to have the opportunity to live
in a decent, safe, affordable place to call
home.
Founded by several churches in 1969,
MEND is a national and state award-win-
ning developer dedicated to providing
safe and affordable rental housing to
senior citizens, disabled persons and
families of low and moderate
income.
MEND has developed 718 residential
units at 29 locations in the Burlington
County region, including Duffy School
Apartments located at the historic Mar-
cella L. Duffy Elementary School in Flo-
rence and Springside School Apartments
in Burlington Township.
Over the last four decades, MENDs af-
fordable housing production efforts have
represented a $150 million real estate in-
vestment in the region.

O
ne more week. Thats all that
we have left of summer. Tech-
nically, there are about four
weeks left, but in the lives of us New
Jersey residents, next Wednesday
when most schools go back in session
for the 2014-2015 year marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun OK, maybe thats a bit dra-
matic.
But its not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, theres plenty to
be excited about, and weve been hard
at work covering this excitement al-
ready.
Our senior associate editor, Nick
Cohen, loves this time of year. Thats
because the end of August means the
start of one of his passions covering
sports. Nick has been on the summer
sports camp trail for a week or so now,
and he will continue to be out and
about on local fields as our high school
teams continue to prepare for the up-
coming season.
Soon, youll see some of the photos
Nick and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, youll begin read-
ing more about the teams, players and
coaches who are involved in the games
they love. And soon, in two weeks to be
exact, youll be receiving The Suns
regular High School Fall Sports Pre-
view guide.
Our fall sports preview special sec-
tion is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and fea-
ture stories as well.
Nick is reaching out to every high
school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But
were calling on parents, coaches and
even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of up-
coming issues of The Sun, as youll
soon see. And not just high school var-
sity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshmen teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we cant do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended com-
munity.
Have a story idea, a score, a picture?
Send it over.
If we cant send an editor out to do a
full-length story and photoshoot, well
make sure your team, sport, league or
club is still covered.
Our doors are always open as are
our phone lines and inboxes. Lets
make this fall sports season one to re-
member!

New Jersey Monthly has an-
nounced the results of its 2014
survey of the states Top Public
High Schools.
A list of the Top 100 public high
schools appears in the September
issue of New Jersey Monthly,
which is available on newsstands.
A complete list of all 339 schools
rated by the magazine will be
published Sept. 2 at www.nj-
monthly.com.
New Jersey Monthly publishes
its list of the best high schools in
New Jersey every other year. The
rankings are compiled by Leflein
Associates, an independent re-
search company in Ringwood,
and are based on data for the 2012-
2013 school year reported by the
schools to the state Department of
Education. Among the factors
taken into consideration are stu-
dent/teacher ratio; student re-
sults on the SAT, HSPA and AP or
IB tests; and graduation rates.
In keeping with changes in
data provided by the DOE, this
years rankings include two new
factors. The SAT performance
score for each school is based on
the percentage of students scor-
ing 1,550 or better on the annual
tests, a benchmark the DOE says
is associated with a high likeli-
hood of college success. Also,
the Student Outcomes score in-
cludes post-secondary enroll-
ment, a calculation of the per-
centage of students enrolled in a
two- or four-year college at least
16 months after high school grad-
uation.
We specifically added these
new data points to our scoring
system to help identify the high
schools that are doing the best job
in preparing their students for
success at the college level, says
New Jersey Monthly editor Ken
Schlager.
The September issue of New
Jersey Monthly also examines
the Garden States readiness for
the new Common Core-aligned
PARCC tests. In a spirited debate,
the magazine also presents the
case for and against the current
school reform movement. And
theres an in-depth look at the
new generation of high-tech,
high-performing vocational
schools.

LuxurIous LIvIng...
Functional additions to
historic homes that do
not look like additions
up, he said. Word has spread
through the town, and people are
definitely excited for what we
have in store for this year.
This years tournament will
see an increase in teams, which
will allow more players to get in-
volved and more games to be
played. Last years event had 18
teams, and this year, Canton is ex-
pecting there to be about 25
teams.
The games are played at the
Perkins arboretum, which allows
four games to be played at
once.
The games are exciting and
competitive, and thats just what
we want, Canton said. But this
year, were going to add a little
more fun.
One of the new activities peo-
ple can expect is a home-run
derby.
We havent quite figured out
exactly how were going to do it
yet, but there is going to be a
home-run derby this year, and
were thinking of some more fun
activities for this year, too, Can-
ton said.
But, while the games are fun,
the real importance is the
fundraising.
All the money we raise will go
toward Perkins and the operating
costs of running all of our won-
derful programs, Canton said.
We really appreciate all the sup-
port we get from the community,
and were proud of the work
were able to do.

ister a team, visit www.perkin-

Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio announced the estab-
lishment of an Intergovernmen-
tal Task Force charged with expe-
diting the countys new
Workforce Development Initia-
tive.
Since its unveiling in January
of this year, the Workforce Devel-
opment Initiative has been a top
priority of this freeholder board
and for me, Garganio said.
Through my professional experi-
ence as a union carpenter, I have
seen firsthand the importance of
matching job training and educa-
tion to the specific and ever-
evolving needs of our local busi-
nesses. The purpose of this initia-
tive is to do just that and
to do it in a coordinated
manner.
To that end, I am establishing
an Intergovernmental Task
Force, which I will personally
chair as freeholder director, Gar-
ganio continued. Together, we
on this task force will be responsi-
ble for expediting this initiative,
ensuring that it receives top pri-
ority and eliminating any obsta-
cles or red tape that it might
face.
Other members of the task
force will include:
County Administrator Paul
Drayton
BCC Interim-President Dr.
Spang
Superintendent Manno from
BCIT and BCSSS
The Honorable Joe Malone as
municipal representative
County Library Director Rajna
Das
Economic Development and
Regional Planning Director Mark
Remsa
Workforce Development Initia-
tive Director Leah Arter
County Human Services Direc-
tor Anna Payanzo
County Employment and
Training Division Manager Kelly
West
County Information Technolo-
gy Director Nick Behmke
I look forward to continuing
to update the public as we move
forward and make tangible
progress for the residents of
Burlington County, Garganio
concluded.
Task Force will expedite countys new
Workforce Development Initiative
