cCaskey didnt
win a game last
season, and
coach Rob Monzon did not finish the year
sounding like a man excited about the programs
present or future.
They need to know that
if they want this to be better
then they need to show the
commitment it takes for it to
be better, Monzon said after
a 41-6 loss to Manheim Township in Week 9 last year.
They have to stop looking
for excuses as to why things
arent right.
Part of the problem was
injuries; the Red Tornado lost
two rotation running backs
and two starting offensive
linemen during the season
opener, a 33-15 loss to Reading. The injuries continued,
and the Tornado simply didnt
have the depth to patch holes
and keep chugging.
The physical wear eventually became mental and emotional wear. McCaskey mostly
played people tough the first
half of the season. Not so
much down the stretch.
They need to start fighting
through and showing the tenacity and character needed
to show that theyre going to
overcome what barriers are
put in front of them, a frustrated Monzon said then. If

Neely 63.
Spangler and junior Jamal
McCaskell, a Dallastown transfer,
handle cornerback duties, while
Gamber starts at safety. Spangler
and Gamber tied for the team
lead in interceptions with two
apiece.
Senior Erik Hill, who hit on 45
of 49 point-after attempts last season, returns to help lead special
teams.
Intangibles: Comet seniors
take seriously their responsibilities as mentors to the younger
players. Its a tradition thats
been handed down, and that
selflessness has helped build team
chemistry.
Were leaders now, Keller
said. We need to do what others
have done.
Braun agreed. Its a huge
responsibility for us, taking care
of the younger guys.
Key to the season: Making
up the yards made by Bell will be
vital, along with the maturation
of the sophomore class. If the
Comets can achieve these things,
a date with Wilson on the seasons
penultimate weekend could be for
the section crown.
Final word: The last two
years weve been in second place
in the section. We want to get over
that hump, Spangler said.

SCOUTING REPORT

y the time they step onto Central Dauphins football field Aug. 29 for their
season opener, the Manheim Township
Blue Streaks will have endured several
weeks of competition.
With a voluminous list of players returning from
last years 5-6 squad and 70-plus players on the field
for the first day of training camp, the battle for
certain positions and roster spots fueled the teams
preparation for the season.
Competition, said coach Mark Evans, is what
makes you stronger.
Its that strength, as well as the heavy returns at
skill positions, that Evans said makes his team the
best hes coached in his three seasons at Township.
About the offense: Junior Erik Benjamin returns to his position under center after injury shortened his sophomore season. Senior Davis Carr, who
passed for 1,031 yards in Benjamins absence, shifts
to wide receiver and a utility role for the Township
offense.

About the defense: The strength of our defense, Evans said, is our secondary and our linebacking corps.
Senior Jacob Zug leads the linebackers after pacing the team in solo tackles (60) and sacks (2.0) last
season. Lining up alongside him, senior Noah Schairer
and Benjamin return with experience as starters.
The veteran secondary includes Morton, a secondteam Section One All-Star at corner. Oluleye, already

NOTABLE: Like offensive linemate Skylar Bender, Sheedy provided the holes
for the Crusaders running backs, who
generated 160.3 yards per game, and
blocked for the teams quarterbacks.
QUOTABLE: Lancaster Catholic coach
Bruce Harbach: Keegan reminds me
of Adam DePietro (former Crusader
lineman now playing for Division I
Northwestern) as far as athletic ability
goes. Hes got good feet, is a strong
blocker and comes off the ball quickly.
Hes a mainstay

One of the goals of new coach Rob Wildasins offense is to get the ball to Evan Horn.
safety. Hes going to be a phenomenal defensiveside-of-the-ball player, says Wildasin. Hes got a
knack for finding the ball.
Intangibles: Wildasin, an Annville-Cleona grad
who started four years at free safety for Division
I-AA Lafayette, had two three-year tours as Terry
Lehmans assistant at A-C and served four years on
Joe Headons staff at Susquehanna Township.
Watching them manage the day-to-day of leading
a program, as well as helping restore the Falcons
hoops program as an assistant to Tommy Smith a
position he continues to hold led Wildasin to this
point professionally.
I didnt feel I was ready to be a head coach
(when the Crest job opened in 2008), Wildasin said.
(Now) everything I needed to give this a shot was
there. Its up to me to either succeed or fail. Its that
time.
Key to the season: Getting a couple of early
victories never hurts. Seriously, though, in a program starved for success any kind of winning string
would build geometricaly. In a section balanced
from three through seven, that could be huge.
Final word: Wildasin tells his squad, You were
3-7 last year, you havent had a winning season in
over 10 years. What impact does that have on you
for this year? Nothing.
Just as if we were coming off 10 winning seasons, it has zero impact.

There are games being played overseas, bigname coaches reintroducing themselves,
big-name coaches saying goodbye, the vagaries of
Lancaster-Lebanon League realignment, and more
than the usual allotment of subplots and human interest.

A FEMALE KICKER
Ephrata has a female kicker, sophomore Caroline Stauffer. She played varsity basketball
and volleyball as a freshman last year but,
surprisingly, no soccer.
To belabor the comic-book metaphor, if Section Two is the Justice League, Wilson, in
Section One, is Superman. Doug Dahms, the Bulldogs' ninth-year coach, is 55-2 in section games, and
has won the section title seven times in eight tries.
Wilson lost plenty, but it was supposedly rebuilding last year, when it went 13-2, and reached the
AAAA district semis.

everal years
ago, Wilson defensive end Austin Rosa recalls
being coached up by
the Bulldogs varsity
players at the schools
summer youth camp,
then watching those
same players on Friday
nights in the fall.
And here is what he
said to himself: I picture
myself doing that one
day.
Rosa, coming off a
13-sack season in 2013, is
now one of the keepers of
a flame that has burned
brightly for decades. And
one that doesnt figure to
be snuffed out any time
soon.
The Bulldogs have
won six straight Section
One titles and 43 straight
section games. They
have enjoyed 38 straight
winning seasons and
50 straight non-losing
seasons.
Well try to be competitive, coach Doug
Dahms said.
Then he laughed.
Nobody buys that, he
said, but you know
Yeah, we know. Everybody knows.

for the Section Two champion
Barons. Theyre also Division
I prospects. On what level
they continue their respective
academic and athletic careers
will depend largely on their
play this fall.
That they have the physical
gifts to play at the next level
is apparent. Moreno is 6-foot
and 238 pounds; Zunich 6-3,
310. What may not be readily
apparent to some are the subtle
strategies they blend with their
size and skill.
Middle linebacker and
center are two of the more
mentally demanding positions
in football. Strength and quickness are not the only attributes
required. As the middle man
in the respective offensive and
defensive sets, the center and
middle linebacker are responsible for recognizing opponents formations and making
the correct call.
Speed-reading schemes
requires intelligence and an
understanding of the game.

years.
Were going to build from the ground up, Cox
said. You cant just start at the top, youve got to
start from the bottom. I had to reach out to the
midget program. Theyre going to do the same thing
were doing on offense and defense. Thats how to
get a program started.
Cox, a graduate of Indiana State, comes from
South Carolina, where he was an assistant coach at
Berkley High School in Moncks Corner. For the last
eight seasons, he served as offensive coordinator at
the school, which has won five state championships.
Weve really emphasized the weight room this
summer, said Cox, who also served as strength
coach at Berkley. Weve worked very hard. Ive
made things as tough as possible with the running,
the conditioning, the workouts.
Theyve done a great job. These kids, about 30 of
them, have been coming in (to the weight room) at 6
in the morning. Theyve become the backbone of the
team. Theyve been buying into it. And it makes the
younger kids coming into the program see what it
takes to commit and be successful.
About the offense: Junior Noah McCardell will
return at quarterback to lead a ball-possession, option offense installed by Cox.
Its been tough but Ive been doing my homework, said McCardell, who ran the Wing-T last
season.
A year ago, he completed 26 of 73 passes totaling
294 yards with one TD and seven picks.
Junior Doug Hassel (89 carries, 549 yards) is the
leading running back this season.
Well be running the ball, Cox said, and throwing off the option. My biggest thing is keeping the
defense off the field. So as much as we can move the
ball, the better off well be keeping the defense off
the field.
About the defense: The Mules will run a 3-4 defense led by nose guard Bo Spiller. A senior, Spiller
led the team with 75 stops last season, including 53
solo tackles. On the pass rush, he was credited with
7 sacks and 11 hurries.
Theres definitely a lot of excitement on the
team, Spiller said. We cant wait to get on the
field.
Defensive end Curtis Herr, who had 29 tackles
last season, is also back. Were all considering this
a fresh start, said Herr, a senior. No one is worrying about the past. Were 0-0.
Senior Vincent Ortiz, who made 37 tackles in
2013, will once again be in the secondary.
Last season, these guys had to go both ways,
Cox said. My plan is to have 11 guys going on offense and 11 on defense so they dont get burnt out.
Intangibles: The Mules will have to replace
Toby Kreider, who was their leading rusher (81,
carries, 730 yards), leading receiver (six catches, 53
yards) and had five interceptions on defense.
Key to the season: Toughness is my biggest
goal right now, Cox said, to put the toughest footPlease see SOLANCO, page 27

ou dont have to be a
contestant on a quiz
show to be spoon-fed
the answer to this
question:
Has any L-L League football
team undergone more change this
past offseason than Lancaster
Catholic?
Short answer? No.
The two-time state champions
have moved from Section One to
Section Two and will take up residence among foes both familiar
(Manheim Central, LampeterStrasburg, Cocalico) and unfamiliar (Garden Spot, Elizabethtown,
Solanco, Lebanon).
On top of that, Crusaders boss
Bruce Harbach has enlisted the
services of former Section Two
head coaches Jim Cantafio and
Gerry Novak to be his offensive
and defensive coordinators, respectively, on a dynamic coaching
staff.
I think they both enjoy being
coordinators, Harbach said.
And now I can enjoy (being the
head coach) a lot more.
Harbach has also added new
position coaches in Dave Beck
(linebackers), Julian Williams (defensive line) and Pete Anderson
(defensive backfield).
Catholics undergoing one
more transition as well.
Were definitely going to have
a different style of football,
senior wide receiver/cornerback/
return specialist Jared Kramp
said. Were going to have more
speed and quickness.
About the offense: Cantafio, long regarded as one of the
leading quarterback coaches in
Pennsylvania and a top offensive mind, joins with Harbach in
overseeing the QB competition
between sophomores Jordan
Scott and Bryan Downey.
Other than that, the Crusaders
multiple spread offense appears
set at several positions. Senior
Skylar Bender starts at center,
junior Guillermo Rodriguez and
soph Noah Thomas at guard,
seniors Keegan Sheedy and fel-
Running back Nassir Weaver gained 685 yards and scored nine TDs
on 136 carries last season for the Crusaders.
low senior Matt Mixel at tackle.
Sheedy (6-5, 260) and Thomas (64, 270) power a unit that averages
235 per man.
Seniors Nassir Weaver and
Christian Kemp team with juniors
Dajzon Garcia and Kurt Harnish
in the backfield, the latter being
penciled in at fullback. Kemp will
also see time at receiver, along
with seniors Kramp and Darius
Goudy and sophs Christian Sweigert and Ricky Poillon. Goudy
will also line up at tight end, along
with junior Cole Cassel.

Luke Eisenhour gives the Cedars some experience at running back after rushing for 232 yards
on 43 carries last season.
man coverage, Yonchiuk said of Maldonado Hernandez and Garynewkirk.
Although the Cedars compiled seven wins last
season, they averaged giving up 28 points in those
wins. Yonchiuk is hoping experience and speed will
slice that number this season.
Intangibles: The transformation of last seasons
team into this seasons. The ability to stay at last
seasons level without dropping back and doing it
through a beefed-up Section Two schedule.
Key to the season: The play of the quarterback, whether its Kissinger, Martin or Francois.
The Cedars have experience everywhere except at
QB, and while whoever fills the role will not have to
duplicate Pyles effort of a season ago, he will still be
the triggerman.
This season, the quarterback will have to manage the games, not win them like Mark did, Yonchiuk said.
Final word: We need to show that they werent
the whole team. We have to show what we can do.
Elijah Navarro, senior linebacker, on the transition between last seasons team, featuring Pyles and
De La Cruz, to this seasons team.

respond to that?
He also wants to emphasize accountability across the board.
Last year, Burke said, we
heard a lot of, It wasnt my fault.
It wasnt me. I emphasize, with
the line especially, youre five
together. If one guy makes a mistake, thats on all of you.
Key to the season: The
Crimson Tide looks to establish
its run game and find an offensive
balance, giving its playmakers
more space and big-gain potential.
Final word: (The sevenon-seven drills gave) us a lot of
confidence, knowing that we can
go up against big schools like
Manheim Central and Township.
We either beat them or gave them
a good run and stayed with them
to the end. Were a little town,
and theyre huge school districts.
Theyre going to state titles and
state playoffs, and were right
there, putting our nose in and giving them a run for their money. It
definitely gives us confidence for
the season, Schreiner said.

can catch the ball and go, making
