Thyroid is the only hormone that affects virtually every cell in the body; thus, there are
dozens of symptoms caused by hypothyroidism, including hair loss, fatigue, weight
gain, depression, poor circulation, dry skin, dry hair, peeling and splitting nails, and
emotional instability. A large number of women suffer from symptoms of low thyroid
output (hypothyroidism), even though they test within the normal thyroid ranges in
laboratory blood tests. The problem with the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) blood
test is the normal reference range is too wide. Overreliance on the TSH level alone is
one reason why so many women are told their thyroid tests are normal even though
they feel many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Learn about thyroid imbalance signs and
symptoms, testing and treatment options.

A
LETTER FROM THE TE
A life worth living
Because we dont know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small
number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your
childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you cant even
conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that.
How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all
seems limitless. Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky
Our culture is obsessed with the concept of being busy. As a result, ours is a
hurried existence. Once the morning alarm blares, we race from the moment we
step out of bed to the moment we collapse back into it.
The more rushed your day, the more important you are. The more hours you
spend at work, the more dedicated you are. The more time you take moving, doing,
working, going the less time you have to ponder whether you are truly fulfilled.
As a nation, we boast of our greatness, yet a dismally small fraction of our days
are truly devoted to being happy. We survive solely for the weekend, the next
vacation, the upcoming holiday, the newest gadget. But when youre constantly
waiting for the next big thing, how many sunrises, embraces from your child,
smiles from your partner, walks in the park, enjoyable conversations, cuddles with
your pet and phone calls with an old friend have you missed?
When did you last live in the moment? When did you last feel the joy and limitless possibility of life itself?
Imagine our world with a little less busy and a little more happiness. What if we
all spent a little more of our days focused on self-fulfillment? When were happy,
were better able to make others happy too.
You can be the spark that makes this happen. Make a promise right now to
focus on the moment; to experience joy and to share it with others.
If this task is daunting, the articles in the following pages can help. Our writers and
advertisers offer tips to help you and yours live well. Learn how to practice mindfulness and stay healthy enough to make the best of your time on this earth. By doing so,
you can make a positive difference in the lives of all whom you encounter.
Live today, dont just survive it. Remember: That new smartphone, the TV, the
last email at work can wait. Your happiness and well-being shouldnt have to.

Many men are not even aware they are going through hormonal
changes associated with andropause, as they consider the physical
changes they are experiencing as symptoms of normal male aging.
If you can look at the following questions and answer yes to either
No. 1 or 7, or if youve answered yes to three or more questions,
there is a good chance you may have a hormonal imbalance.
1. Do you have a decrease in libido (sex drive)?
2. Do you have a lack of energy?
3. Do you have a decrease in strength and/or endurance?
4. Have you lost height?
5. Have you noticed a decreased enjoyment of life?
6. Are you sad and/or grumpy?
7. Are your erections less strong?
8. Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play
sports?
9. Are you falling asleep after dinner?
10. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work
performance?
Complete evaluation of a mans diet, lifestyle, stress and hormone
levels is key before initiating any course of hormone replacement.
If testosterone is indicated, standardized or custom-dosed bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, guided by comprehensive
hormone testing, and regular monitoring for increased risks and
side effects may be the answer. In many cases testosterone is not
indicated, and other strategies are initiated to improve the mens

could! So I dove in. And I was once again flying and having fun.
One of the biggest benefits of the hammock was the strength
training work. The fabric allows for many ways to strength
train using your body weight. Unlike conventional body weight
exercises where you have minimal adaptations with big weight
increase between adaptations (push-ups, for example: against
a wall, with a chair, on the knees and full plank), the hammock
has virtually unlimited variations to body weight so you can
increase and decrease the weight youre working with by very
small amounts. This was extremely beneficial after I had shoulder
surgery to remove the bone spur. In order to get back on the pole,
I needed to build strength in a major way and aerial hammock
was my solution.
Two months after surgery, I was back on the pole carefully.
Thanks to training with pole and hammock, four months after
surgery, Im well on my way to regaining my strength and movement. I found hammock to be such a useful cross training tool
that I became a certified aerial yoga instructor and built an aerial
studio.
Though my year of injury wasnt fun, Im grateful it made me
try a new apparatus. The result is a strong body with robust training options.
Dr. Paula Brusky is the owner of Aerial Dance in Appleton. Holding numerous
fitness certifications, she is also an injury prevention specialist for musicians. For
additional information about pole or hammock fitness, call 920-750-1441, go
online to www.PoleAppleton.com or try the hammock at the Aerial Dance Open
House on Sept. 3 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

strength training is added to their fitness routine. Body composition changes can be witnessed by inches lost, even though sometimes the scale may not move as far and as fast as we may have

at hand and focusing our complete attention on that moment can help us to feel
centered and balanced.
We all wear multiple hats and take on
different roles throughout the day. It is
inevitable that some days, one of the roles
gets more attention than another. When
these days start to add up, we need to take
a step back and determine where we can
find our personal balance.
How do you find balance in your life?
Do you find yourself stuck wearing one
hat too often and not being able to give
the others a little more attention? Sometimes we have to put a little more time and
attention into ourselves to find that state
of balance. When we step away from our
daily tasks and find some time to focus our
energy on self-care, we often find that our
many responsibilities and tasks get a little
easier and flow a bit more smoothly.
There are a number of ways to hit your
personal reset button.

Financing
your home
improvement
projects
By Alan M. Zierler
Unless your home is relatively new, chances are that more than one
area of your home could use some work. Whatever your project
of choice, its important to clearly define your project parameters
in order to control costs and get the biggest bang for your buck.
Ways to pay
Cash: Paying in cash is always a great option and can save you
a bundle in interest and fees. Even if you cant afford the entire
30
were when you took out the first mortgage on your home, refinancing the balance of your current home loan at a lower rate
while borrowing additional cash to pay for home improvements
can be a good option. Since youre actually reapplying for a first
mortgage, upfront costs usually include a home appraisal as well
as possible closing and loan processing fees. However, it could
take a year or two to recoup loan expenses, so its probably not the
best financing option if youre planning a move in the near future.
In addition to cash and the loans mentioned here, there are
several other ways to save on home improvements, including
government loan programs, government and store rebates, and
more. From materials to financing, shopping around and doing
your homework can help save you money on home improvement
projects, both now and later.
Alan M. Zierler is the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Credit
Union. He holds a bachelors degree in business management
from Silver Lake College, and serves on the board of directors for
Corporate Central Credit Union and the Community Foundation
of the Fox River Valley, among others. Zierler and his wife, Judy,
have been married for 36 years, and they have three children and nine grandchildren. Pioneer Credit Union merged with Capital Credit Union on July 1 to
form a new Capital Credit Union, which is headquartered in Green Bay. The
new Capital has more than $1.1 billion in assets and serves more than 90,000
members from Oshkosh to Sturgeon Bay and Appleton to Shawano and beyond.

American Flag
Cake (glutenand
dairy-free)
By Danielle Lythjohan
Cake ingredients
Frosting ingredients
You will also need two 9-inch cake pans and one 4-inch mini
springform pan.
Prepare remaining package of cake mix according to the directions on the package.
Pour batter into a 9-inch greased cake pan, reserving 1 cup of
batter. Bake the 9-inch cake according to the package directions.
Frosting instructions
Assembly
Cut the 9-inch red cake in half lengthwise, making two layers.
Place one layer on a cake stand and spread frosting on top, just
enough to cover the cake.
Next, using the mini springform as a stencil, cut the center of
the white cake layer. The idea being that the mini blue cake will fit
inside the center of white cake.
Place the white cake on top of the frosting and again top with
more frosting just to cover.
Next, using the mini springform as a stencil, cut the center of
the remaining red cake layer. Again, the idea being that the mini
blue cake will fit inside the center of the red cake.
Place the remaining red cake layer, which should now have the
center cut out, on top of the frosted white cake layer. Frost the
inside walls of the hole in the red and white cake layers. This will
help when you insert the mini cake layer inside.
Place the mini blue cake into the center of the red cake layer.
(You may need to cut the blue cake down so the top sits flush with
the red cake.)
Now you can frost the entire cake with your remaining frosting
and decorate!

An

with countless stories to tell
TC Dance Club reveals dancings many benefits
BY REBECCA BENTZ
Travel the world and you will discover just
one language that crosses all boundaries
dance. But you neednt venture far and wide
to experience the myriad benefits of this art.
Students of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds gather right here in Appleton to learn
at TC Dance Club, a social ballroom dance
club of international renown.
Perhaps their dance stories will inspire you
to lead your own.
Lenore Domers
Dancing is just
discovery, discovery,
discovery.
Martha Graham
A TC Dance Club
student for 12 years,
Lenore considers the
studio the perfect
place to exercise both
body and mind.
Dance gives you
better balance, more toned muscles but it
also has psychological benefits, she explains.
It challenges you, whether youre learning the
next level of a dance or youre preparing for a
showcase.
In addition to a physical and mental workout,
TC Dance Club members enjoy a fun, social
atmosphere. Some, like Lenore, strive to push
their limits and continuously improve their skills,
while others take a more leisurely approach.
Whatever a persons level of interest, the studio
offers the opportunity to connect with and learn
from other students, which can further inspire
and assure new and experienced dancers alike.
As for Lenores favorite dance? I love to do
them all. Bring it on!
Kathy Olenski
Dance is a song of
the body. Either of
joy or pain.
Martha Graham
Just as dance
provides therapy for
the mind and soul, it
also benefits the body,
and TC Dance Clubs
individually tailored
approach to teaching
guarantees youll learn at a pace and manner
that is best for yours. Kathy considers her experience proof of that.
After an auto accident limited her movement for a period of time, TC Dance Instructors adapted Kathys instruction to work with
her bodys needs. The dancing complemented
Kathys physical therapy, but was still a fun and
Jared Sears
Were fools whether
we dance or not, so we
might as well dance.
Japanese proverb
If youre wondering
whether you should
give dancing a try,
the TC Dance Club
members and instructors are wondering
what youre waiting
for. In fact, the most common sentence Terry
and instructors like Jared hear from members
is, I wish Id done this sooner.
Sometimes its tough to take that initial
step out onto the dance floor. You might be
afraid that youll look silly or think you simply
cant dance.
It can be intimidating the first time, Jared
acknowledges. But we all start at the same
place. Knowing that, the staff and other
members are quick to offer encouragement
and tips.
TC Dance Club makes it a point to tailor
each lesson to an individuals experience level
and goals. More importantly, the club helps
people find the joy in dancing and once you
discover that, the fear of looking foolish disappears. In time, youll be weaving stories all your
own with the cha cha, foxtrot, rumba, mambo,
tango, waltz and more.
Making connections
Through the years, Terrys competitive dancing, instructive skill and choreography have given
him the chance to work and befriend many big names: Cheryl Burke, professional dancer of
Dancing with the Stars fame; former Green Bay Packer Donald Driver and professional dancer
Peta Murgatroyd, winners of the 2012 Dancing with the Stars competition; Frankie Valli & The
Four Seasons; Dorothy Benham, Miss Minnesota 1976 and Miss America 1977; and even former
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Margaret Thatcher.
Terry also had the honor of choreographing Bob Hopes last USO tour. A photo of the two
men hangs in TC Dance Clubs hallway.
Just as important for Terry, though, are the opportunities dance has given him to work with
local students: people like DeLila Nock, who started dancing at age 74.
She taught me more about life than I could possibly ever teach her about dancing.
The two became fast friends and when she was in her 80s, Terry promised DeLila that they
would dance together on her 100th birthday. Sure enough, they did just that; dressed in a blue
and sequined ball gown, DeLila cut quite the figure as she glided around the floor in Terrys arms.
This connection to the community and his students is what makes everything worthwhile.
The best part of it is every morning when I wake up, I know I get to go to a party, Terry says.
I get to be with the nicest people, to dance and have fun I cant imagine any better job.

family, but a random person who will just listen and offer advice or
share stories with you. You can talk things through clearly and from
many angles with a stranger or acquaintance. No judgments will be
made, but clarity and new ideas will be conjured up.
BE A FRIEND TO SOMEONE WHO HAS A HARD TIME
FINDING ONE. Putting yourself out there to help another will
make you feel great and create positive energy to help yourself too.
STOP COUNTING CALORIES. Rather than focusing on what
we are eating, we count calories. Try looking at what you eat instead,
and youll meet your goals faster.
STOP JUMPING BANDWAGONS FOR ANSWERS. The
answer is you. You just dont realize the changes that are needed
in order to achieve your goal. Personal coaches/trainers are there
to guide you. Exercise and nutrition work together and create
www.naturespathways.com
awesome results. They are both very tricky, but the magician is you.
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF. You are your only friend
that really understands every angle you have. Just breathe and clear
your head and then reevaluate your thoughts.
TAKE TIME TO BE ALONE IN THE PEACEFUL OUTDOORS.
Just staring at nature and seeing and hearing the small things it
provides will regenerate your inner positive spirit and help create
the drive you need. Gaze at the surroundings and just let your mind
look at every little creation. Rejuvenating with nature is the best
positivity builder.
MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH. No
matter how big or small, an accomplishment is an accomplishment.
DONT COMPARE YOURSELF TO MAGAZINES. We often
try to look like models, but little do we know what they do to look
that way. They are no different than us in regard to feelings, struggles and flaws. Modeling is their job, but it is not our jobs to kill
ourselves to be flawless. I dont believe they want that either.
BE INSPIRED, NOT OFFENDED. Inspiration to fulfill your
goals and continue to work hard should come first before you think
of what other people will judge.
It is easy to give up, think negatively and quit. Being positive and
inspirational comes with a lot of work in this world, but if you believe
in your dreams, they will come true. There is no deadline on your
dreams. There are setbacks and mishaps, but the dream never leaves
as long as you never give up. Be true to yourself and ask for help along
the way. I hope these simple points will help you enjoy the life you live
to its fullest. I wish you the very best in being a happy you and being
proud of what you do. No idea is dumb and no failure is a chance to
quit, but rather a chance to build upon your values and beliefs and try
again. What you see is truth. Through self-encouragement and your
inner drive, you will be successful at what you put before you.

From the
inside out
An anti-aging attitude
By Marcia Thompson, M.Ed., MSE, L.P.C.
Gluten-Free
Gourmet Fine Foods
then asked if I could take what I have learned over the years with
me. She said no. I then told her I would stay the age I was. I know
she was surprised that anyone would choose old over young.
Claire, however, did not know that I am younger now than I have
ever been in my life. It has taken a lot of years to identify, let go, and
replace inherited and practiced thought patterns. Thought patterns
that kept me stuck and limited my freedom to truly live life for over
50 years. My habits of thinking needed to control, be perfect, judge
others and never have enough. Fear was the unknown bedrock for
my thoughts. These thoughts affected my emotions and therefore
my choices.
I now tell people I am 28 years old and that statement always
brings a smile if not a laugh. The truth is, I am 78, having had 28
years to be awake and truly live in the precious moments I have
been given. Many conversations and books have helped me move
from fear to love, from prison to freedom, and from worrying about
the past or future to living agelessly in the now.
Eckhart Tolles books, The New Earth and Stillness Speaks,
have energized my view of life. The idea that life is always now may
seem obvious, but for most of my life I seldom lived in the now.
Eckharts words: This one moment Now is the only thing
you can never escape from, the one constant factor in your life
really challenged me. I realized I had missed most of my nows by
putting my thoughts on the past or future. I often tell people I stood
at the Grand Canyon and never saw it. This is true; my mind was
very busy wondering if the people there thought my husband was
cute, or if they liked my outfit, or if someone might be breaking into
our tent. My husband can remember everything about our trips.
They are all a blur to me. How sad to lose so much of life.
This new awareness has spurred me on to not lose any more time
and to enjoy the time I have. It has not been easy to renew my mind,
but I am doing it. What I am discovering in this process is more joy,
appreciation and excitement than I ever had when I was young. I also
find life easier and my stress level is way down. Living in the now
with an attitude of gratitude has opened up in my world. I truly look
www.naturespathways.com
forward to what each day will bring. When I sense the old pattern
coming back I take a deep breath, tell myself No! and choose to
see something good in the moment even if it seems silly, like my
flannel sheets are soft, my car heater works, I had a great lunch, my
dog loves me, my knees no longer hurt, it is not raining, etc.
I guess you get the idea that being grateful is all around us and
keeps us in the now. Tolle tells us, The moment you enter the Now
with your attention, you realize that life is sacred. There is a sacredness to everything you perceive when you are present. The more
you live in the Now, the more you sense the simple yet profound joy
of Being and the sacredness of all life.
From this perspective, age is only a number.

Hearing
health for
teenagers
By Dr. Stephanie Long, Audiologist
tricky thing about hearing changes resulting from over-exposure to noise is it often
does not hurt at the time and occurs so
slowly that before you know it, there is a
problem.
When a person has tremendous noise
exposure, like at a rock concert, he or she
experiences a feeling of fullness or pressure
in the ears. This is a sign that a very significant noise exposure has occurred and some
hearing will not return. Although there is
often a temporary shift in hearing sometimes accompanied by tinnitus (ringing or
buzzing in the ears) that does go away with
time, the hearing never returns completely.
Teenagers are a great risk of noise

any of us enjoy the change of seasons and have a favorite time of year. Some of this has to do with how it
affects our personal health and enjoyment of outdoor
activities. Skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling can get us out in
the sunshine, while some would rather hibernate at home. Hot,
muggy swimming and tanning weather is loved by some, while
others are flattened by allergies and fatigue. I love clear, crisp fall
weather and colorful leaves the most.
The amount of particular wavelengths of sunlight per day is
another huge factor affecting mood and health. Our skin needs
sunlight to manufacture vitamin D, which is essential for many

start with 20 minutes in the morning and go from there. There are
many neurotransmitters and hormones involved, such as norepinephrine, serotonin, melatonin and dopamine. For either light
or antidepressant medication to help, we need good nutrition to
provide the building blocks.
While light as received by the retina of the eye or by the skin
can help conquer depression and other problems, you can have
too much of a good thing. Its always best to check on safety with
your doctor and do your own research. While generally safe, a
SAD light can cause side effects for people taking certain medications or suffering from certain chronic illnesses.
I suggest reading the 2012 edition of Winter Blues: Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder,
by Norman E. Rosenthal. This book helps individualize a healthy
plan. What Wisconsinites might be lacking in sunlight, we make
up for in water. Researching seasonal disorders, I ran across Blue

are ok, but too wet and you may strain your mowers engine and
not achieve the leaf-size reduction you are seeking.
Another option is to use your mulching mower once to shred
the leaves, but not so small as to incorporate them into the
lawn. Gather your leaf shreds and use them as mulch in flower
beds, vegetable gardens, under trees and shrubs, or in container
gardens. A 2- to 3-inch layer of leaf mulch will help retain moisture and limit weed seed germination, according to Vanderlinden.
Remember that in Wisconsin, yard waste is banned from landfill disposal by state law. Yard waste is defined as leaves, grass clippings, yard and garden debris and brush, including clean woody
vegetative material no greater than 6 inches in diameter. Yard
waste does not include stumps, roots or shrubs with intact root
balls. So please dont place your leaves with your regular trash.

Alpacaassisted
therapy
By Sunny Link and Sally Schmidt
sk any dog or cat owner, and they will tell you their pets
help them stay relaxed and healthy. As early as the 1980s,
scientific studies were proving this to be true. According
to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, the best effect is felt when
actually touching an animal, but health benefits occur even if an
animal is simply nearby.
And the Norwegian Journal of Medicine has found reduced
systolic blood pressure in pet owners compared to nonowners,
as well as lowered concentrations of plasma triglycerides and
cholesterol.
The go-to animals for pet therapy are usually dogs. They are
social, easily trained, portable and socially familiar to people in
the U.S. Other animals like ducks, goats, cats, horses and even
reptiles work well. In the Fox Valley, there is a new critter joining
the ranks for animals used for therapy alpacas.
Alpacas are part of the camelid family. While their larger
cousins, camels and llamas, function as pack and guard animals,
alpacas are bred for their luxurious fiber. Llamas are natures guard
dogs, and tend to spit and fight to keep threats away; alpacas are
generally peaceful and calm and will flee from a threat rather than
confront it.
They dont spit often at humans, unless you come between them
and their food bowl or interrupt an argument with a fellow alpaca.
Personality wise, alpacas are much like a golden retriever loyal,
friendly, smart, patient and curious. Alpacainfo.com notes that
this makes them an excellent therapy animal for people with
physical and mental disabilities.
For people in wheelchairs, a smaller animal like a dog can be
hard to reach. Alpacas are usually about 3 feet tall at the top of

restaurantSPOTLIGHT
Friends of Manilas owner Marlo Ambas, would often rave about his
Filipino meals, created in part thanks to his strong family roots. These
words of encouragement helped inspire Marlo to open Manila.
Marlo takes pride in providing Manilas customers a true and
authentic Filipino dining experience one that cannot be found
anywhere else in the area. The name, Manila Resto, pays homage
to the capital of the Philippines, which has long been a melting
pot and source for multicultural foods.
In addition to Marlo wanting the food to be truly authentic, he
also wanted to be sure he had healthy options, so he partnered
with the eatsmart! food program. This program certifies qualifying restaurants as an eatsmart! option so diners know that they
are selecting a healthy dining experience. To be certified as an
eatsmart! option, menu items must follow the ThedaCare Optimal
Nutrition Guidelines. Under these guidelines, food is prepared
from fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats and lean
proteins, and uses little salt and sugar. Any restaurant should be
proud to be able to serve these options.
