1 IMPORTANCE OF PROGRAMMING FOR INDUSTRIAL

ENGINEERING

Presented by Julieth Tatiana Garca Zuluaga

Simulation of processes is one of the greatest tools of Industrial Engineering, in so far as it
represents a process through other that makes it simpler and more understandable, although in all
cases arising simulation does not essential, this procedure would it less complicated. A more
specific definition is: Simulation is the process of design a model of a real system and carries at
term experiences with him, in order to understand the behavior of the system or to evaluate new
strategies -within the limits imposed by some criterion or a set of them- for operation of the
system.

Now, you can ask why the title is The importance of programming for Industrial Engineering
and it does not The importance of simulation for Industrial Engineering, the answer is simple,
the simulation is achieved through programming, and although today there are many powerful
types of software that help us to realize this process without having to type specific syntax of
some language, it is essential as Industrial Engineers have basic concepts of algorithms, OOP
(Object Oriented Programming), etc., because of an engineer is characterized or stands out from
others higher education levels in that he knows what it is the beginning of things, and thus he can
innovate and create new things. It should be clarified that a good and complex application it
always managed to create better a Systems Engineer, because of this is his main field of action,
but there are processes and methods that industrial engineer can better understand and so if you
have previous knowledge of systems programming, you could apply so more precisely.

The application areas of simulation are very broad, numerous and diverse, enough to mention a
few: analysis of the environmental impact caused by various sources, analysis and design of
manufacturing systems, analysis and design of communication systems, simulation is used in the
design stage to assist in achieving or improving a process or design or an existing system to
explore some modifications.

The main advantages that simulation gives are: generally more economical to improve the
system through a simulation that in a real way. It is much easier to visualize simulation methods
that purely analytical methods, this you will give a deeper understanding of the system. Once the
model is built its modification will is much faster, these modifications occur to analyze different
possibilities or scenarios that allow you to make better decisions front at various alternatives
affecting the model directly. It is not necessary interrupting the operations of the company for
that you observe possible changes in the processes, methods, distribution, etc. Provides a simpler
solution when mathematical procedures are difficult and complex. Provides full control over
time, given that a phenomenon can be accelerated. Supports innovation processes as it allows the
engineer observe and play with the system.

Finally, it is necessary mentioning the simulation importance in operations research and its
industrial applications. In highly developed countries the simulation is a major tool in the
processes of decision making, business management and production planning.
Well and for those who do not like programming or simply is not of much interest to acquire
skills in this, do not care! Simulation today is increasingly user-friendly; you do not have to be a
specialist in computers to make use of it and can have a forecast on a particular topic.
