Koi Varieties

NOTE: The name at then end of a variety description indicates the group the koi is
classified in.

Ai Goromo
(EYE-GOR-OMO) A Kohaku whose red scales have blue semi-circular borders, giving
the Koi a reticulated pattern (Koromo)



Aka Bekko:
(ACKA BAKE-O) A red Koi with black markings. (Bekko)

Aka Matsuba:
(ACKA MATS-BA) A red Koi with black 'pinecone' Matsuba pattern in the scales along


Akame:
(ACKA-MAY) An eye with a red iris. Most often seen in Ki-goi. (Kawarimono)


Asagi
A grey-blue Koi with red along the sides, cheeks and in the fins. (Asagi / Shusui)

Beni-goi
(BENNY-GOY) A non-metallic red Koi, resembling Akamuji but with a deeper red
coloration (Kawarimono).

Beni Haijiro
(BENNY HA-J EER-O) Red koi with white tips on its pectoral fins (Kawarimono).

Some of the listings below are recent varieties such as the Kikokuryu or Doitsu or Gin
Rin classes. I've had to add the voice in two parts so to here the entire name pronounced
you'll need to click on each word individually. I don't think it will take you long to get the
"Doitz" or "Gin Ling" down pat.
Beni Kikokuryu
Basically, a metallic Kumonryu with some red (Beni). (Kawarimono:)


Beni Kumonryu:
Doitsu, red with white markings (Kawarimono:).



Budo Goromo
A Koi with a purplish, grape-like pattern on its whole body (Koromo).

Chagoi
(CHAR-GOY) A non-metallic light brown or tea colored Koi (Kawarimono).


Doitsu Aka Bekko
Doitsu, red/orange with black markings. (Doitsu)

Doitsu Aka Matsuba
Doitsu version of the pinecone scales. (Doitsu)

Doitsu Hariwake
Doitsu, metallic white with red, orange, or yellow markings. (Doitsu :)

Doitsu Hi Utsuri
Doitsu, black with red markings. (Doitsu :)


Doitsu Ki Goi
Doitsu, yellow non metallic. (Doitsu)

Doitsu Kohaku
Doitsu, white with red markings. (Doitsu)


Doitsu Kujaku
(Doytz Coo-J a-Coo) A platinum Koi with red markings over its body and black markings
in the scales along the dorsal and lateral lines only (Doitsu).

Doitsu Midori Goi
Doitsu, green. (Kawarimono)


Doitsu Ochiba Shigure
Doitsu, blue gray with brown to gold markings. This variety is mostly just called Ochiba
for short and you will also see it printed as Ochibashigure. It means "autumn leaves on
water". (Kawarimono)

Doitsu Platinum Ogon
Doitsu, solid white metallic. (Doitsu)

Doitsu Sanke
Doitsu, white with red and black markings. (Doitsu)


Doitsu Showa
Doitsu, black, with red and white markings. (Doitsu)

Doitsu Yamabuki Ogon
Doitsu, metallic yellow. (Doitsu)


Gin Matsuba
Metallic with black pinecone markings on scales. (Hikari Mujimono)


Gin Rin Beni Goi
Solid red koi with silver scales. (Kin Gin Rin)


Gin Rin Chagoi
Brown or tea colored koi with silver scales. (Kin Gin Rin)


Gin Rin Goshiki
Five colored koi with silver scales. (Kin Gin Rin)


Gin Rin Hajiro
Black koi with white tips on the fins. (Kin Gin Rin)

Gin Rin Hi Utsuri

Gin Rin Ki Bekko

Kage Shiro Utsuri
Black koi with white marking where the black stays submerged and looks gray.

Kin Kikokuryu
A Kikokuryu with the base color of yellow instead of white. (Kawarimono)

Kin Matsuba
Gold metallic Matsuba. (Hikari Mujimono)


Kindai Showa
New style showa. Showa with more than 40% white. (Showa)


Kohaku
White fish with red markings. (Kohaku)


Koromo Sanke
Sanke with the "robed" markings of a Koromo on the red. (Kawarimono)


Kujaku
Metallic white and orange with with the pinecone scales like the Matsuba. (Hikari
Moyomono)


Kumonryu
Means "Dragon", a doitsu black koi with white markings that change with the season.

Matsukawabake
The Matsukawabake is a fully scaled version of the Kumonryu. (Kawarimono)


Nezu Ogon
Gray metallic koi. (Hikari Mujimono)


Ochiba Shigure
(Autumn leaves on water) Blue/gray koi with brown, bronze, or gold markings with net
pattern. (Kawarimono)

Orenji Ogon
Metallic solid orange koi. (Hikari Mujimono)


Platinum Ogon
Solid white metallic also called Purachina Purachina: (PU-RA-CHIN-A) (Hikari
Mujimono)


Sanke
White koi with red and black markings. (Sanke)

Shiro Bekko
White koi with black markings. (Bekko )


Shiro Utsuri
Black koi with white markings. (Utsuri)


Shochikubai
Pine, bamboo, and plum. A metallic Ai-goromo (Hikari Moyomono).


Showa
A black koi with red and white markings. (Showa)


Shusui
A doitsu version of the Asagi. (Asagi / Shusui)


Soragoi
Blue/gray koi with a net pattern. (Kawarimono)


Sumi Goromo
Basically a Kohaku with black edging over the red scales. (Koromo)


Sumi Nagashi
A Koi whose black scales are outlined in white. (Kawarimono)


Tancho Goshiki
A Goshiki with a red spot on the head and no red on the body. (Tancho)


Tancho Kohaku
A white koi with a red spot on the head only. (Tancho)


Tancho Sanke
A Sanke with a red spot on the head and no red on the body. (Tancho)


Tancho Showa
A Showa with a red spot on the head and no red on the body. (Tancho)


Yamabuki Ogon
A Metallic solid yellow koi (Hikari Mujimono).


Yamatonishiki
A metallic Doitsu sanke. (Hikari Utsurimono)


Yotsushiro
Literally, 'five whites'. A black Koi with white head, pectoral, dorsal and caudal fins
(Kawarimono).
