H
ands-on learning is the best way to master the networking skills necessary for both
CompTIAs Network+ exam and a networking career. This book contains dozens of
hands-on exercises that apply fundamental networking concepts as they would be applied in
the real world. In addition, each chapter offers multiple review questions to reinforce your
mastery of networking topics. The organization of this book follows the same organization
as Course Technologys Network+ Guide to Networks, Fifth Edition, and using the two together
will provide an effective learning experience. This book is suitable for use in a beginning or
intermediate networking course. As a prerequisite, students should have at least six months
of computer experience and should be familiar with some basic networking components,
such as NICs and patch cables. Passing CompTIAs A+ certification exam would suffice in
lieu of this experience.
FEATURES
To ensure a successful experience for instructors and students alike, this book includes the
following features:
Network+ Certification ObjectivesEach chapter lists the relevant objectives
from the latest CompTIA Network+ Exam.
Lab ObjectivesEvery lab has a brief description and list of learning objectives.
Materials RequiredEvery lab includes information on network access privileges,
hardware, software, and other materials you will need to complete the lab.
Completion TimesEvery lab has an estimated completion time, so that you can
plan your activities more accurately.
Step-by-Step InstructionsLogical and precise step-by-step instructions guide
you through the hands-on activities in each lab.
Review QuestionsQuestions help reinforce concepts presented in the lab.
Note for instructors: Answers to review questions are available on the Course Technology Web site at
www.cengage.com/coursetechnology. Search on this books ISBN, which is on the back cover.
HARDWARE REQUI REMENT S
The following is a list of hardware required to complete all the labs in the book. The hard-
ware requirements for many of the individual labs are less than what is listed here.

Note that none of the labs require more than three computers at any one time, so
all of the labs could be performed with only three computers. As well, many of the labs
can be installed in a virtual environment on a single computer with sufficient resources.
Alternatively, you might choose to install multiple network operating systems on each
computer, as this will allow you to boot into a particular operating system when needed
for a lab and reduce the number of computers needed. Disk space requirements will
increase on computers with multiple operating systems.
The minimum requirements for at least two server computers are as follows:
Pentium or compatible processor running at 2 GHz or higher
1 GB of RAM
At least 40 GB of available storage
A CD or DVD-ROM drive
At least one installed NIC (network interface card)
Hardware compatible with Windows Server 2008, Standard Edition (see www.
microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)
The minimum requirements for the workstation computers are as follows:
Pentium or compatible processor running at 500 MHz or higher
512 MB of RAM minimum
At least 2 GB of available storage
A CD or DVD-ROM drive
At least one installed NIC (network interface card)
Hardware compatible with Vista or Windows XP Professional (see www.microsoft.
com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)
In addition, at least two computers compatible with a current version of Fedora Linux,
which is free for download from http://fedoraproject.org/ and a variety of other sources are
required. The minimum requirements for these computers are the same as the worksta-
tion requirements.
Other hardware required for various labs include the following:
Internet access (cable, DSL, or faster preferred)
One wireless router that can function as a DHCP server and a compatible wireless
NIC
At least five PCI Ethernet network interface cards with RJ-45 connectors
Category 5 (or better) UTP cabling (or better) to make cables
At least six straight-through Category 5 (or better) UTP patch cables

Preface ix
At least three crossover Category 5 (or better) UTP patch cables
RJ-45 connectors
A computer professionals toolkit that includes a Phillips screwdriver, a ground
strap, and a ground mat
A networking professionals kit that includes a cable tester, crimper, wire stripper,
and a wire cutting tool
One network printer
Four 10/100 (or better) Ethernet hubs
Two switches with fiber uplink ports and a compatible fiber cable
Two modems and a dial-up Internet account
Access to two analog outside phone lines (or two digital lines and two digital-to-
analog converters)
SOFT WARE/SETUP REQUI REMENT S
The following is a list of software required to complete all the labs in the book:
At least two copies of Windows Server 2008, Standard Edition
At least two copies of Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional
At least one current copy of Fedora Linux (note that one copy can be used for
each computer)
NOTES ON THE LABS
Unless otherwise stated, at the beginning of each lab it is assumed that the student has
turned on each computer but has not yet logged on.
On Windows Vista/XP computers, Control Panel should be set to Category View,
which is the default; the default Start menu should also be used.
On Windows Server 2008 computers, the default Start menu should be used.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT S
Id like to thank John Bosco for his patience and attention to detail throughout the edito-
rial process. Thanks also to Nick Lombardi, Michelle Ruelos Cannistraci, Andrea Majot,
and the rest of the Course Technology/Cengage staff. Finally, Id like to thank my friends
and colleagues at the Nova Scotia Community College for inspiring me with their love
of learning.
