Unit 1 Factors & Multiples Preview
Mathematical Concepts: (Your child will be able to) Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range of 1-100 is prime or composite. Knowledge of multiplication as arrays and its connection to area of rectangles to determine factor pairs, 1- 100. Knowledge of and ability to apply multiplication facts to determine multiples of one-digit numbers, 1-100. Ability to apply knowledge of basic multiplication facts to determine if products are prime or composite by determining all possible factor combinations for specific products for numbers through 100. Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1 100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2). Ability to build on student knowledge of and differentiate between factors and multiples. Ability to build on student knowledge of factor pairs of whole numbers. Ability to identify and differentiate between common factors and common multiples of 2 whole numbers. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Find the Greatest Common Factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers. Identify and describe the characteristics of numbers divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Identify factors and prime factors using factor trees. Identify and define perfect squares and their square roots. Vocabulary: (Words your child will need to understand) Factor: The numbers or terms multiplied in an expression Multiple: The product of a whole number and any other whole number. Factor pair Exactly 2 numbers that are multiplied together to get a product Composite number: A number that has more than two factors. Divisible: Capable of being divided by another number without a remainder Prime number: A number that has exactly two different factors, itself and 1 Perfect square: A whole number that is the square of another whole number Ex. 4 x 4 = 16, 16 is a perfect square Square root The number that, when multiplied by itself, gives a product. The square roots of all square numbers are whole numbers. Array An arrangement of quantities or symbols in rows and columns which can model a product and a factor pair Least Common Multiple (LCM) The smallest of common multiples of two or more nonzero whole numbers. Greatest Common Factor (GCF) The largest of common factors of two or more nonzero numbers
Optional activities to do with your child: Find or create numbers with number cubes or spinners and determine if they are divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, or 10. Roll two numbers two make prime or composite numbers. Play with a partner to see who can make 5 of each first. Practice counting by multiples. Practice basic facts.
