HISTORY OF DAM:

Gujarat has fertile soils and its farmers are industrious and resourceful. Despite this, the
state faces heavy food deficits. This is because of recurrent scarcity and feminine and also
because the state has inadequate irrigation facilities, Tapi is a virgin river whose water
were running waste into the sea, same times causing destruction in the process due to
high floods, the havoc caused to field land property, lines of communications etc. by the
catastrophic floods in the
Tapi and the Narmada during 1!" and 1#$ are still fresh in the memory of people.
%&ai is the largest multi'purpose project underta&en by the state Government and is only
ne(t to Narmada project, so far as benefits are concerned. %&ai forms the terminal
reservoir harnessing nearly half the water of Tapi.
The Development of the lower tapi is done by the Gujarat Government in two stages. The
&a&rapar weir and the canals project having an estimated cost )s, 1" crores forms the first
stage. This project was commissioned in the *ear 1+, and the canal system provided
seasonal irrigation facilites to -, -#, +.$ hactors /+-!,-+$ 0cres1 from the run of the
river.
The second stage is the %&ai 2ultipurpose project estimated to cost )s.1.!3' crores. The
dam is located across the river Tapi about - 4.2 upstream of the &a&rapar weir.
