T
he Estes Valley
Library will offer
two more opportu-
nities this season to
learn about the powerful
Morningstar Online tool
for personal investors.
Morningstar is one of the
premier resources for
financial information, and
the library maintains a sub-
scription that allows card-
holders to access the site
inside the library or from
home. The free Morning-
star: Resources for Inves-
tors workshop will be
offered on Monday, Sept.
15 at 10:30 a.m, then
repeated on Tuesday, Sept.
16 at 7 p.m.
Morningstar has long
had a specialty in helping
investors understand and
evaluate mutual funds.
While that specialty contin-
ues, the service has vastly
expanded to include
detailed information and
recommendations on indi-
vidual stocks and other
investment vehicles. The
service also helps users
with ideas on the best
investment strategy and
portfolio for their age and
life situation.
Marsha Yelick, Financial
Programs Coordinator at
the library, will lead these
upcoming workshops. Par-
ticipants will be able to
practice as they learn in
the comfortable new set-
ting of the librarys com-
puter instruction class-
room.
Seating is limited, so
advance registration is
required.
To sign up, visit estesval-
leylibrary.org and navigate
to the particular date of the
workshop. For additional
information or registration
assistance, contact the
library at (970) 586-8116.

onlookers who get too
close.
Every day our Estes
Park Emergency Commu-
nications Center receives
numerous calls for police
officers or police auxiliary
to respond to elk issues
around Town, and the vast
majority of issues are
caused by people, com-
mented Estes Park Police
Chief Wes Kufeld.
He explained that the
most common reports to
dispatch are people getting
too close to the elk and elk
jams, caused when drivers
park their vehicles in the
way of traffic in order to
watch the elk.
Kufeld continued, Safety
should be first on the
minds of elk-viewers, so
they can have a great expe-
rience.
The Police Department
provides the following tips
to visitors for safe elk view-
ing:
Elk are wild animals
which must be observed
from a safe distance to
avoid injury or death. If an
animal is carefully watch-
ing you and appears
jumpy when you move,
you are too close.
Keep pets secured on a
leash and do not allow
them to bark at, lunge at,
or chase wildlife.
Never block traffic.
Move your vehicle to a safe
place completely off the
roadway to watch elk.
Do not imitate an elk
call, or bugle, when elk are
irritable during the rut.
This can endanger you and
the elk.
Elk know no boundar-
ies, but people do. Respect
private property when
viewing wildlife.
The Estes Park Police
Department does enforce
wildlife laws including laws
against feeding or harass-
ing wildlife, or allowing
ones pet to harass wildlife.
For more information,
please contact the Town of
Estes Park Public Informa-
tion Office at 970-577-3701.
Animals such as
this 7x7 bull elk
attract numerous
viewers during the
fall.

An anonymous quote tells us, If you fnd out how to make money
at something you love doing, then youll never have to work another
day in your life. Meaning, if you love what youre doing then its not
work! If you dont have a job that you love maybe you can learn
to love what you do. For a better chance at success, you will want to
include daily prayer in your plan for fulfllment. Your relationship
with God determines your attitude, your confdence, and your peace
of mind. Visit His House and give thanks this Labor Day.

M
y hometown of
White Sulphur
Springs, Mont.
has put on a
rodeo since the thirties,
always on Labor Day week-
end. I miss going to it. This
year it was dedicated to a
good friend of mine who
passed away recently. June
Ramsey Burnheardt, was the
secretary of the rodeo club
several times, a barrel racer
for many years, team roped,
timed events, and was
always there to help out
where ever she could. And
she was a good hand.
There were a few years
when we chased wild horses
out of the Needle Rock coun-
try. Once again, steep coun-
try, nearly solid rock, and
lots of coulees, gullies and
blind canyons. Just tough
country.
After getting the horses
out of the hills, we had sever-
al miles of sagebrush flats
we had to move them, at a
run of course, before we got
them to a corral where we
could work them.
June and her husband
Nick Carr, had a really nice
mare out of Cotton Picker, a
AAA quarter horse stud, that
was also a good cutting
horse. June often rode her
when we rounded up the
wild ones. June was the
equal of anyone that chased
horses. She and Nick were
out in front of the bunch of
around a hundred and fifty
or so horses, running flat out
across that sagebrush flat.
Jim and I were on either
side of the bunch and all of a
sudden June and Cotton just
disappeared from sight. Cot-
ton jumped up, stepped on a
rein and went head over
heels again. We couldnt see
June and the whole herd
kept on going right over
where she had fallen. Nick
saw her go down too, and he
turned off, the herd follow-
ing him. Jim and I and the
guys riding drag got the
herd past where she went
down and a few of them kept
the herd circling.
Jim, Nick, a couple of oth-
ers and I started searching
for June. All at once she
jumped up and seemed okay,
and answered questions
properly. She got back on
Cotton. Jim and I took the
lead and she and Nick
dropped to the rear to follow
along and keep the back end
moving.We got the horses
corralled a couple of hours
later with no further prob-
lems.
Our camp was set up by
the corrals, so we all got our
saddle horses taken care of,
made sure the gates were
tied, and sat down to take a
break before we started
working the horses. June,
Nick, Jim, Tuck, Judge John,
Dave, three of four others
and I were looking over the
horses when June asked
how we had gotten them in.
She didnt remember finish-
ing the gather, leading the
bunch, falling or anything
else, but, she was always in
the right place, at at the right
time, even though she had
taken a fall and her hat had a
hoof mark on it. When we
started working the horses
after we ate, she was right
there as if nothing had hap-
pened.

ESTES PARK INSIDE & OUT SEPTEMBER 5, 2014 9
S
till sitting in the
back of my mine is
the statistic that
Dr. David Katz
shared with his audience
during the Integrated Medi-
cal Convention a couple of
years ago. He said that only
one and a half percent (1
%) of Americans reach the
daily recommended serv-
ings of fruits and vegetables
a day. Really? Only one and a
half percent? That statistic
really shocked me. Im not
sure what I was thinking or
if I have ever thought about
how many Americans actual-
ly get their recommended
servings of fruits and vegeta-
bles a day. I assumed that it
was more than one and a
half percent. This is a sur-
prising statistic to me, one
which is very shocking and
sad.
The Food Pyramid that so
many of us are familiar and
which was updated in 2005,
recommends that we eat at
least two to three servings of
vegetables and two to four
servings of fruit every day. If
you were to actually look at
these serving sizes, youd be
surprised as how little the
basic requirement is.
So, I started paying very
close attention to what I was
eating and what my kids
were eating. Guess what?
We were not eating the rec-
ommended amount of fruits
and vegetables. I was not
eating the recommended
amount of fruits and vegeta-
bles. I wanted to bury my
head in the sand. I was, am
so embarrassed. How could
this be?
Then I asking my friends
and quickly discovered that
all of my friends also were
not meeting the recommend-
ed daily servings of fruits
and vegetables. Wow. Now
we all must bury our heads
in the sand. The responses I
got from those close to me
were vast. One friend said
that she never serves fresh
vegetables because her kids
would just throw them in the
garbage. Another said that
they dont like them, and
that she didnt know how to
make them taste good. Then
another said that she is
always throwing out rotten
fruit.
Well. I decided to hit Cos-
co on the way home from a
recent trip to the airport and
I literally bought every fruit
and vegetable that they had
available in their supersized
containers. From the minute
that I got home, I started eat-
ing my four to seven serv-
ings of fruits and vegetables.
I immediately told my family
that we would all try to not
be part of the 98.5% of Amer-
icans that dont eat their
fruits and vegetables.
So, after being accused of
child abuse by my daugh-
ter, Mom, we eat more
fruits and vegetables than
any of my friends. We now
have to eat more? This is
probably a true statement;
however we werent eating
consistently the recommend-
ed daily requirements. I
decided to focus on doing
better.
How? Well, it took a lot of
work. Ive tried to have fresh
fruit cleaned, prepped and
available in the refrigerator
or sitting on the kitchen
counter. Simply cutting the
watermelon ended in it
being demolished within 24
hours. A bowl of cut up
strawberries, blueberries
and peaches ready to con-
sume was refilled daily and
left front and center in the
refrigerator. I personally
decided that I would eat
grilled vegetable sandwiches
for either lunch or dinner,
and offered to share and
make plenty for whoever
was hungry. We started grill-
ing vegetables and not serv-
ing rice or potatoes.
The other thing I started
purposely doing was recom-
mending that the kids
choose the fresh fruit as
their snack. I would suggest
adding tomatoes, lettuce and
cucumbers to their sand-
wiches. I just started to add
it without asking. I started
recommending fruit shakes
as a snack. I made a point to
suggest and help prepare
these fruit and vegetable
options.
