1: Research
- Research Group and theses/publications of people working on your stuff before
- Review type papers in the subject
- Set up an email feed for important topics
- Reference manager such as refworks or mendeley
- Communicate with your supervisor (good & bad).
- Technicians: Joe, Ron, Mark, Mike & John
- Admin staff for other questions: Florence = grad administrator, Vania dept. administrator, Lily
undergrad administrator
- Problems that cant be dealt with above: Grad rep. Me & Dr. Bone grad advisor
- Experiments: detailed notes i.e. is construction going on, what is the weather (MAC Weather
station)
- Courses: Need 4. Dont fail. Talk to the prof if you think you are failing. If you are, drop it.
JHA forms & H&S courses must be done & grad seminar course (1 presentation for M.A.Sc., 2 for
Ph.D.) attendance is mandatory, more details at intro session. Pizza social afterwards in grad
lounge
- Scholarships & Conferences: Try to get both. Talk to supervisor and research group
2: TA
- TA training with Donal & wajih. Mandatory & important
- PREP
- If not comfortable with material, talk to prof, learn it or swap with someone else
3: Other
- Department events: Potluck usually in February, might have some other things going on. If you
have any ideas feel free to suggest them.
- GSA events, Other clubs e.g. outdoor club trips, wonderland etc.
- TRANSPORT: Hsr card is good for Hamilton, and can get transfers to Burlington. PRESTO card
activiate student discount for cheap GO bus tickets e.g. to Toronto, Niagara. Compass in the
student centre do discounted tickets for events and transit. Also student carshare programs are
available. Might want to think about getting a credit card that has car insurance coverage
- FOOD: student mealplan on your student card 10% off on campus and some other places like
BP. Some places have cheap days for students e.g. Metro is Tuesday and bulk barn is
Wednesday. Wholesale food: Fiddes on Ewen 10-3 mon-sat and nations.
- HEALTH: health and wellness centre in basement of student centre. Campus dentist & optician
in student centre. Prescriptions are discounted on TA plan in pharmacy in student centre &
shoppers across the street. Emergency: clinic on main street at macklin
- GYM: ONLY NEED membership if you want to use the machines or get reduced rates for classes.
Otherwise you can walk in. Book squash courts, drop-in volleyball, table tennis,
badmintonGym sale you can buy clothes and sports equipment for reduced prices.
- LIBRARY: older papers in stacks. Can request papers/theses available at other universities
through interlibrary loan RACER. Books can be taken out for a month before renewal. Group
study rooms available if you need them. The ones in the health science library are really good.
