To launch our theme and program year, Christian Formation, Worship & Music, Mission & Outreach, and Congregational Life & Care have joined forces to help St. Johns be a light in the world through several outreach projects.
Our light-filled day begins with coffee, lemonade and pastries at 10:30 a.m. in the church parlor and on the front steps, and continues with Intergenerational Worship at 11:00. Fol- lowing worship, we will carry the light of Christ from the sanctuary to the fellowship hall, where all are invited to help with several outreach projects that will share Gods light in Richmond and throughout the world:
Church World Service baby kit assembly so that newborns will experience the world as a hospitable place from birth
CARITAS furniture build so that those who have been homeless can feel welcome in their new houses
CARITAS overnight hosting preparation so that our guests for the week know that we consider them part of our extended family
There will be ways for all ages to participate in these projects and we will enjoy a light lunch while we work together. DRESS CASUALLY for the entire day.

As we prepare for our 2014 offering you will find a series of 2013 grant-recipients highlighted in your bulletins; these grants were made possible by your generous 2013 NIN offering. Please take the opportunity to read how the funds have been used and to see how these grant-recipients are helping us to imagine another world where a quality education is accessible to all, literacy is no longer a concern, educating women and girls is a priority and the school to prison pipeline is eliminated.

God o Love: Thank you for every teacher who notices a childs special gift. Thank you for teachers who are listeners and gentle guides. Thank you for teachers who expect much and love enough to demand more. Thank you for the special teacher each one of us remembers. God o Mercy: Sustain teachers who give everything they have and feel abandoned when society expects too much. Strengthen teachers who assume the blame for so many problems beyond their control. Help exhausted teachers rest. God o Strength: Encourage teachers to care and inspire them to nourish. Motivate teachers to keep on learning for the fun of it and to make learning fun for children. We wonder at teachers who know how to quiet a class of five-year-olds or help fourth grade girls be empathetic. We admire teachers who enjoy middle school writers, or teach physics or math or civics. We cannot even imagine how to help every single student achieve Adequate Yearly Progress. Bless the people who are expected to accomplish these miracles and who know how to comfort children when miracles dont happen. God o Justice: Help our nation find a way to steward our vast wealth to support teachers in their special calling, wherever they teach and whatever the race or religion or gender or wealth of the children. We pray these things in the name of our great teacher, Jesus Christ. Amen. Give Me Strength: Personal Prayers for School Teachers by Sharon Harris-Ewing
For teachers The Messenger | SEPTEMBER 2014 5 CHILDREN Faith Place Sundays @ 9:45 Children ages 3-10 will gather from 9:45-10:45 a.m. to explore stories from Genesis. Each week they will learn about a biblical figure, try out a spiritual practice, enjoy a snack, and engage in activities that help them discover what it means to be part of Gods light. Faith Place will be in a new location this year, upstairs in the large classroom. Julia Eliades will be the primary teacher.
Toddlers (2s & 3s) Sundays @ 11:15 New this year is our toddlers class, which will meet in the classroom across from the church office. Each week, our two and three year olds will gather to listen to a story, share an activity, and join in simple prayer practices. Kristina Gilbert and Elisabeth Burnette will be the primary teachers.
Primary (4-8 years) Sundays @ 11:15 Our Primary class will explore the same stories as the Faith Place class, but with different activities. Children ages 4-8 will have the chance to use drama, crafts, music, and other group projects to help them shine their light brightly in Gods world. The class will meet in the large classroom upstairs with Karen-Marie Yust as the primary teacher.
Junior Youth (9-13 years) Sundays @ 11:15 Like the younger children, the Junior Youth class will use the Shine curriculum for their age group. Each week they will gather in the small third floor classroom to experience a bible story, explore the meaning of that story for their lives, and seek Gods blessing as they prepare to be bright lights for God. Sarah Allen will be the primary teacher.
Nursery (birth-2 years) Child care is provided in our nursery space on the main floor of the education/office wing. Kristen Lennox, our paid nursery worker, and a rotating group of volunteers care for our young- est children every Sunday morning from 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Parents are asked to sign-in at drop off and label all personal items in a childs diaper bag.
CONFIRMATION Our confirmation class (Cammie, Josh, Ashley, Bryan) will be completing their work during the 2014-15 school year with experiential studies including discipleship, other religions, and Jesus Christ. The year will culminate in their confirmation next spring on Pentecost Sunday, May 24th. Your continuing prayers and encouragement are very much appreciated.
ADULTS Adults Sundays @ 9:45 Our fall adult class will focus on how Gods prophets have shone Gods light in the world and what we might learn from their examples. They will use the Keryg- ma curriculum Amos & Hosea: Boundaries, Tough Love, Amazing Grace and meet in the newly refurbished adult space in room B-2. One part of the room will contain study bibles, commentaries and a computer for accessing online resources for faith formation. Steve Plymale and Karen-Marie Yust will be the primary teachers.
Adults on Monday Evenings All adults interested in reflecting on their faith in a small group setting are welcome to participate in a monthly gathering for study and prayer. This group is currently exploring the Psalms and how these ancient words can shape contemporary lives. Julia Eliades facilitates these meetings, which met in someones living room and will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on September 15, October 20 and November 17.
Adults on Wednesday Evenings Wednesday evening faith formation for adults includes Centering Prayer at 6:00 PM, followed by 7:00 PM reflection on the book The Selfless Way of Christ by Henri Nouwen. Copies of this book are available ranging from $10.00 (Kindle version) to $11.00 (paper, new). Our first class will be September 17th. http://www.amazon.com Please see or call Pastor Tom for more information.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. - - Matthew 5:14
Gods light shines amidst the darkness in our world, and we are called to be a reflection of Gods light, shining that light at home and beyond. We need Gods light to transform us and give us wisdom so that we can bring healing and hope to the world.
WHERE WILL YOU SHARE YOUR LIGHT? Have you ever thought of being involved with the work of St. Johns in that same way? Often when people decide to covenant with others they are encouraged to seek out a situation within the life of the community or congregation that BRINGS THEM LIFE and then seek one out where they can be the LIFE-GIVER.
Church Council is trying on a new way of thinking regarding the fulfillment of our ministries. We are inviting you to discern your own ministry based on where you can share your light. Below is a list of our ministry offerings. We ask you to prayerfully consider one of these ministries listed below to strengthen your life.
Speak with Rev. Tom, Julia or any member of the Church Council to learn more.

What a wonderful summer we have all had in Richmond this year fairly cool temperatures, much needed rain and no major weather issues! We are blessed. I hope you have enjoyed your vacation time, getting out doors in the beautiful sunshine or whatev- er was on your plate! St Johns has had several different groups working very hard over the summer months. The Search Committee finished our Church Profile and is busy reading candidate profiles. Our hope is to have a new Pastor sometime during 2015. An adHoc committee is busy on the challenge of updating our Church Constitution and By laws and will be bringing the revised doc- ument to the congregation thru discussion groups sometime in late 2014 or early 2015. Your Church council has been tackling many issues that face our church at their meetings this spring and summer. The Facilities committee held a clean-up day at the church and thanks to the group that assembled to do the work. Everyone needs to take a look at our upstairs kitchen, as Sonny Darnell has made it look new! The classrooms are getting a cleanup for our church year ahead and to those volunteers thanks! Our Trustees have been dealing with some issues regarding our parking lot and the council will have more information in the coming months to discuss with the congregation. We are going to have the opportunity to give an extravagant welcome to a group of Caritas participants the first week in Septem- ber. If you have not already signed up to help, please do so. Several committees have taken this endeavor to heart! Our to be Eagle Scout James Cook finished his Eagle Scout project of a new sound table for the balcony. Thanks to Rob Osborn and Richard Bighinatti who mentored him through this project. Most of all Rev. Tom and Julia have been busy supporting all these activities, with some much deserved time off. Shirley has provided us with a variety of music and Diane is our dedicated stable force in the office. We say thank you to all of them for their love , devotion and support to us at St. Johns. The fall is a busy time and there is much going on. St. Johns Players will be presenting their production Some Enchanted Evening: the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein II. The Play opens on Friday, September 26 and runs for 8 performances, includ- ing two matinees. A Dinner theatre night will be held on Sat. Oct 4 th . There will be flyers around and please invite a friend and enjoy the show! We need volunteers to help as ushers at all performances and servers for the dinner on Oct. 4 th . Please see either Tony Sharpenstein or myself! The German Fest and Dinner will be held on October. 17 and 18 th more info to follow! The Finance committee is presently working on our Stew- ardship drive for the fall and the church will be asking for you pledge to support our many activates, expenses and mis- sions. This is our way of appreciating Gods presence among us in our daily lives and the work we do for others. A great big thanks to all who are doing Gods work at St Johns we love you and appreciate all your efforts!

Search Committee Progress Report Our advertisement for a senior pastor at St. Johns was posted on the UCC website about the middle of July. Since that time, we have received a number of profiles from pastors who are interest- ed in our position. We have reviewed all of these profiles and placed them into different groups that reflect our level of interest. We are very interested in several of these candidates and we are now in the process of notifying all of our current candidates about their status. Telephone or skype interviews will be arranged with candidates where a mutual high level of interest is present. Our search is not over. We expect to receive and review addi- tional pastor profiles for at least two more months, and we will possibly find more candidates in whom we have high interest. We will keep you informed of our progress. - - St. Johns Search Committee 8 The Messenger | SEPTEMBER 2014
