I was delighted to have welcomed
Vice-President Xi Jinping to Ireland for
his ofcial visit last month. That visit
was a great honour for our country
and it was hugely successful in terms
of forging closer links between Ireland
and China and also creating a stronger
awareness of what Ireland has to offer,
thanks to signicant coverage of his
programme by the Chinese media.
His visit had a hugely positive
impact in further strengthening the bonds of goodwill
and friendship between Ireland and China, particularly in
relation to trade and investment. I was delighted to accept
the invitation to visit China and by leading this Trade Mission
I intend to build on the momentum and goodwill already
generated.
Specically, Vice-President Xis visit was of major
signicance in highlighting the opportunities for Irish
companies to work with local partners and customers in
accessing growth opportunities in China. Since Ireland and
China rst exchanged diplomatic relations in 1979, annual
bilateral trade has grown from e7 million to over e6 billion.
China is now Irelands tenth largest trading partner and our
biggest trading partner in Asia.
More than 240 Irish companies are exporting to China
and 140 of them now have ofces in the market, employing
about 10,000 Chinese workers locally. We want to build on
this success and I am condent that this Trade Mission will
be a springboard for deeper engagement.
Irish companies have been working hard to build a
strong awareness and a positive image of Ireland in China.
Our similarities are greater than our differences and we
share an enthusiasm for enterprise and innovation. We have
many business skills and competencies that complement
each other very well in terms of selling into world markets.
I wish all trade mission participants and their current
and potential Chinese customers and partners every success
over the next few days and of course over the coming
months and years, as you deepen and develop your business
relationships.

MINISTERS INTRODUCTION
China is a modern, dynamic and
consumer driven economy with a
wealth of opportunities for Irish and
Chinese business to work together and
generate income and value. Id like to
assure you of the Irish Governments
full support in developing trade and
technology links between the two
countries.
Visits by Irish Government
Ministers to China now occur on a
regular basis, and are reciprocated by visits to Ireland by
high-level counterparts. The ofcial visit of Vice-President Xi
Jinping to Ireland last month was an honour for our country
and reects the strengthening and deepening of the already
solid relationship between us.
Enterprise Ireland has a strong presence in China with
three ofces in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, as well
as a specialist team in Dublin supporting Irish companies
to develop market opportunities in China, particularly
in technology, education, nancial services and agri-
food. IDA Ireland, Bord Bia and Tourism Ireland are also
represented. This Team Ireland approach in cooperation
with the Irish Embassy and Consulate is tangible evidence
of Irelands long-term commitment and the Governments
determination to further develop business and trade
between Ireland and China.
Economic growth has recommenced in Ireland; our
export performance is buoyant, and the Government has a
clear Action Plan for Jobs in place. In short, Ireland is open
for business; Irish companies are winning business and
Ireland has a lot to offer business partners in China.
I have no doubt that the Irish companies who are with
me on this visit will be successful, both in generating new
business and in forming lasting partnerships with Chinese
companies.
Richard Bruton T.D.

Government of Ireland

CEO INTRODUCTION
Trade and economic co-operation
between Ireland and China has grown
dramatically in recent years. This
Enterprise Ireland Trade Mission is
focused on building on this strong
relationship and substantially
increasing Irish exports to China.
It reects the commitment of the Irish
Government, Enterprise Ireland and
Irish businesses to further accelerate
the pace of trade and development
between our two countries. Our progress in turning this
commitment into a reality is seen in the surge of Irish
companies doing business, establishing a local presence and
accessing growth potential in the market.
This trade mission is a key element in a concerted
strategic drive by Enterprise Ireland, in conjunction with our
Embassy, Consulate and other state agencies, to identify and
fully unlock the undoubted opportunities that exist in this
market for Irish companies across a wide range of sectors
in International Education, Financial Services, Life Sciences,
Aviation, Engineering, Software, Construction Services, Food
and Agri-Technology.
Irish companies have high hopes and ambition for
strong and sustainable business partnerships with Chinese
enterprises which will grow our commercial ties and benet
both countries; this is the driving force behind this Trade
Mission - an increase in business trafc which will result in
more trade, investment and ultimately jobs and prosperity
for both countries.
Enterprise Ireland is strongly committed to working
in partnership with Irish companies to establish and build
long term sustainable positions in the market. We are
proud of the achievements of the increasing number of Irish
companies across all sectors with a presence in the market
and look forward to continuing to strongly support our
clients in growing their business.
I would like to thank the many people and organisations
in Ireland and China who are working together to make
this Trade Mission a success. I wish all the Enterprise Ireland
clients and participants well and hope that the contacts
established and renewed this week will result in lasting
business relationships for many years to come.
