Grade 9 Math Journals

What are math journals?
Your personal math journal (or log) is a resource that will give you cues on how to perform certain
operations in the future. It is a tool used by English and Immersion Grade 9 Math students at PAJH.

How often will we do math journals in class?
After learning about a new topic in math, you will complete an entry that will give you cues on how to
perform that operation in the future. The math journals are a great way for you to have your own
personal text book that includes examples and reminders on how to solve problems! You are
responsible for keeping your math journal up to date. It will be kept in the classroom and you can
take it with you at the end of the year...It will definitely come in handy when you get to high school!
You can also use it for your end of year assessment, so make sure to check with me if you miss a class
where we do a new entry! An alternative journal will not be provided to you for the end of year
assessment only your work in your handwriting.

What needs to be included in my math log?
In your math log, you will have the following:
Title Page
Table of Contents
This Grade 9 Math Log Sheet
Reflection sheets with each concept on it
A blank reflection sheet

Will all math logs look the same?
No! Each person will detail their math logs as much or as little as they want, but there are some basic
requirements. Guidance will be provided. You will need to include the following:

Any rules that go along with a concept (for example, exponent rules)
At least 2 different examples (These can be taken from class work)
An explanation of how to solve the problem or any cues that will remind you of how to solve
future problems.

How do I start?
Begin with your first entry using the guided questions provided on the following page. We will take
time as a group to review the first entry and organize our journals.
