MOBILIZATION

Terms:

To sit up in bed
To sit in the chair
To walk with the help of various walking aids (walking frame, walking
stick, crutches, walking aid on casters)
To be mobile
To sit across the bed

Explanation of the terms:

The nurse helps the patient to sit up in bed
Then the patient lets his/her legs dangle from the bedside (sitting across
the bed).
One Day later, he/she may sit n the armchair
As soon as the patient is better, he/she may use the walking frame.
Patients requiring no help in getting up and walking are called mobile.

Expressions used by the nurse:

Where is your dressing gown?
Do you want me to help you get up?
Do you want me to help you put on your slippers?
Are you feeling better today?
Are you feeling dizzy?
I will take your blood pressure before you get up.
Please remain in the armchair until after lunch!
I will put a pillow behind your back to make you more comfortable.
Please ring the bell if you feel bad!
Hold your head up!
Look straight ahead!

Expression used by the patient:

Nurse, I would like to get up.
Please help me to get up.
Nurse, I feel much too weak to get up.
Nurse, I feel dizzy.






POSITIONING THE PATIENT

Terms:

Positioning the patient at a 30 angle.
Positioning the patient at a 90 angle.
Positioning the patient on the stomach.

Explanation of the terms:

Positioning aids are used by the nurse to position the patient
Immobile patients are repositioned by the nurse every four (two) hours.
This repositioning is to ease the strain on one half of the body.
There are two types of lateral positioning: at 30 and 90 degrees.
The 30 degrees position puts very little strain to the patient.
Sometimes the patient may also rest on his/her back.
For eating, the nurse puts the backrest in an upright position.
Some patients prefer to lie on their stomachs.
The so-called mediscus bed is a special bed for soft positioning.

Where does it hurt?
Is it still painful?
Please lift your head!
Please pull up your legs and bend your knees.
Please hold tight!

PROPHYLACTIC CARE (PREVENTION)

Explanation of the terms:

To avoid the formation of pressure sores, the nurse carries out the bedsore
(decubitus) prophylactics, which ensures the regular easing of pressure on
the individual parts of the body.
The tally equine prophylactic prevents the formation of tally equines
(footdrop).
A contracture prophylactic serves to combat the stiffness of joints by
bending the patients joints.
A thrombosis prophylactic serves to prevent phlebemphraxis (occlusion of
veins) in the legs.
For this purpose, the nurse bandages the patients legs before he/she gets
out of the bed.
Some patients are given support stockings, e.g. before operations.
A pneumonia prophylactic is to prevent the patient from contracting
pneumonia. For this purpose, the nurse positions the patient with his/her
chest upright and asks him/her to breathe deeply.

Expressions used by the nurse:

Call me if you want to get up!
I will bandage your legs before you get up.
Please wear gym shoes in bed for one or two hours per day to avoid
footdrop.
I will help you put on support stockings first.
I will turn you over on your right (left) side so you wont get sore.
Jiggle your feet to and for ten times to avoid thrombosis!
Sit up and breathe deeply or youll catch pneumonia!
