Introduction

Staff at IFES Macedonia and OSCE/ODIHR worked together to develop this English-
Macedonian and Macedonian-English glossary of commonly used election-related terms.
We hope that this will promote consistent usage, thus reducing the potential for confusion
in translated materials. Please keep in mind that this glossary may be updated as needed.


Some key points

1. While the term for Parliament in the Macedonian language is closer to the
term Assembly (Sobranie), we have decided to continue using the term
Parliament, that has been used in numerous translations over the years.
2. Similarly, the Macedonian language term for Member of Parliament is
roughly equivalent to the English term deputy (Pratenik). However, in order to
avoid confusion with the use of the term deputy as a replacement, e.g.,
deputy to a member of the State Election Commission, we decided to use the
term Member of Parliament.
3. The term President (Pretsedatel) in the Macedonian language has very wide
usage. It refers to the following office holders:

The President of the Country;

The Prime Minister (President of the Government);

The Speaker of the Parliament (President of the Parliament); and

Chairman of an Electoral Management Body (President of the State
Election Commission, for example).

In our translations of the draft election laws, we have used the formal term
president. However, in other documents, the terms Chairman, Prime Minister
and Speaker are often used. We believe this is acceptable, as long as people are
aware of the practice.
4. Some terms in Macedonian have one or more synonyms. Some common ones
are used in this glossary.
