GROUPE ADEO, headquartered in France, is the second largest Do-It-Yourself (DIY)
retailer in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. With annual turnover of 12.8
billion, its 62,400 employees work within 24 companies operating in 11 countries.
All GROUPE ADEO companies share a common goal: To help each homeowner
envision his or her ideal home and make it a reality. To that end, stores ofer an array
of products - about 60,000 per store, on average - as well as workshops and expert
advice to help guide the homeowner in their DIY project.
Adeo Services is dedicated in providing the maintenance and provision of all IT
solutions for the Group. Their role is to collaborate with each of the IT departments
for all of the 24 business units of Groupe Adeo.
With an accelerated growth rate - the groups turnover has doubled in less than 6
years - driven by a three-pronged strategy of external, domestic and international
growth, Groupe Adeo realizes the importance of IT at all levels of its activities, and
like most of the companies in the distribution sector, it seeks to continually improve
the efectiveness of its information systems in order to increase responsiveness and
to ofer its users the best technologies on the market.
Adeo Services launched its rst virtualization projects in 2005, by implementing
VMware ESX and VMware vCenter. At that time Groupe Adeo managed around 20
virtual machines, today that has increased to over 2000 in operation. During this
time the company has extended its collaboration with VMware.
Initially, our goal was to meet the restricted needs for Linux and Windows servers.
This allowed us to test and to get familiar with the VMware technology states Benot
Mailliet, VMware Architect/Administrator for Production Management and Support at
ADEO Services. We gradually implemented many products from the VMware suite.
As we continue to grow, VMware accompanies us in simplifying and optimizing our
infrastructure, and is the reason for many IT productivity gains.
As well as the virtualization of production servers, ADEO Services have also
virtualized the workstations of all of their partners and employees. VMware View
enables secure access to their information. Adeo Services chose to deploy VMware
vCenter Lab Manager in 2008 and VMware vCloud Director in 2010 in the test and
development programs conducted by its IT teams.
We have implemented VMware vCloud Director to provide our developers with
virtual environments used to conduct tests, to validate installation procedures for
the stores or to make developments in a private Cloud explains Benot Mailliet.
A web portal, interfaced with ESX and vCenter, enables automatic environments
provisioning by proposing to developers environment catalogs which are ready to
use. One of the main advantages of vCloud Director is that it manages the lifecycle
of the created virtual machine: if it is not renewed, it is automatically deleted. This
allows the optimization of our virtual park management: previously it was difcult to
control the actual use of a VM.
Adeo Services has also found that the use of scripts to congure the operating
system of the virtual machine is signicantly easier. The OS is delivered alone,
without an application layer and without customization. The installation of
applications is performed via scripts and the update of any application requires only

the modication of the script, which helps Adeo Services to achieve considerable
productivity gains (the creation and updating of an application catalog are extremely
time-consuming). With this installation method, we are able to supply the latest
application platform to our developers on-demand, which avoids timely environment
conguration adds Benot Mailliet.
Adeo Services whose primary mission is to provide production services and
infrastructures for the Business Unit is able to automate the provisioning of virtual
machines and provide the desired capacity by maintaining the required physical
servers: Previously, each developer had to ask the administrator to create a precise
conguration, with an OS, applications and preset parameters, which could take 2
weeks. Now, in 15 minutes, the developer has the machine which he has congured
himself via the catalog. The only check that we need to perform is the maximum
number of machines and the maximum capacity of the disks used. We create and
delete around 20 VM a day in total in our environment of private Cloud species
