Sean Fischel’s love of reading inspires ‘Book Nook’
Moorestown Library, Sean Fischel Connect charity team up to remember 7-year-old who died in 2013

Sean Fischel loved to read.
Kimberly Fischel, Sean’s’
mother, recalls that even as a
baby, Sean would sit on her lap
and the two would happily read
books together.
So with construction starting
on the new Moorestown library
not long after 7-year-old Sean’s
tragic death in January 2013 from
Hemophagocytic Lymphohistio-
cytosis, a rare and aggressive au-
toimmune disorder, Fischel and
the rest of her family were pre-
sented with an opportunity to
honor Sean and give back to the
community that supported them
in their time of grief.
With their charity, Sean Fis-
chel Connect, Fischel and her
family donated the funds to create
what would eventually become
“Sean’s Book Nook.”
Sean’s Book Nook, which the li-
brary officially dedicated with an
open public house on Sept. 11, is a
children’s section of the library
that includes a large story time
room, “Sean’s Shed,” a playhouse
painted blue for Sean’s favorite
color, and an actual book nook
containing books that reflect
Sean’s personality, each inscribed
with who donated it and specially
denoting it for Sean’s nook.

Greg Gallo, representing the
Economic Development Advisory
Committee, gave a presentation
on getting new parking meters for
Main Street at the Moorestown
Council meeting on Monday, Sept.
8. Members of council voiced that
they were in favor of or at least
interested in getting new meters.
Gallo discussed how meters are
good for businesses. Meters en-
courage turn over, so people don’t
take up a parking spot for hours,
allowing other potential cus-
tomers to come in. Meters also
allow the town to make revenue.
“Problem is, we have multiple
meters consistently out of serv-
ice. It makes it very difficult for
people to comply to the regula-
tions,” Gallo said.
Having non-working meters
causes mix ups with ticketing,
loss of customers and loss of rev-
enue. Gallo also noted that

Moorestown’s meter fees are
sometimes 50 percent less than
other towns in the area and in
Pennsylvania.
Gallo was sure to mention that
they are not making a sales pitch.
Instead, EDAC is making a rec-
ommendation. And its recom-
mendation is to keep a meter
strategy, but update it.
“Make a change, it is time,”
Gallo said.
Gallo stated that if
Moorestown were to put in new
meters, it would pretty much be
self-funding. With the broken me-
ters, as well as other factors, the
town is not making as much
money as it should. However, if
they got them working and in-
creased the pricing, the meters
could potentially be self-funding.
There are multiple options
available in regard to meters. Sin-
gle space and multi-space meters
are available as well as the al-
lowance for coin payment along
with debit and credit card pay-
ment. There is even the possibili-
ty of a phone app that allows you
to pay wherever and extend your
time.
This would be an improve-
ment, not just because they work,
but in other ways. Speed, use,
maintenance and monitoring
could all be easier if the meters
were updated. Also, many of the
meters are solar powered and
wireless, making for quick and
easy transmitting of data. This
could help with compliance as
well as an increase in revenue, es-
pecially if the price were in-
creased to 50 cents rather than
the current 25 cents, Gallo said.
Members of council voiced ap-
proval of the ideas and that it is
something that they’ve been talk-
ing about for awhile.
“I think it is very important to
keep the turnover for our busi-
nesses,” Councilwoman Victoria
Napolitano said.

It’s time to take the points
Christie takes chance on New Jersey sports betting as the underdog
o one would ever accuse Gov.
N
Christie of being reserved, of
not speaking his mind, or of
not taking chances.
No one.
Last week, he solidified that once
again when he decided to lift New Jer-
sey’s ban on sports betting. His deci-
sion – which came as a surprise to
many around the state and nation – is
in direct opposition to what he said a
month ago when he told us all to forget
about sports gambling.
With the governor’s decision, and
directive to law enforcement, casinos
and horse race tracks can start offer-
ing bets on professional and collegiate
sports – as soon as a judge affirms
that what Christie is doing is legal, or
at least isn’t illegal.
A federal law prohibits sports bet-
ting in all but four states. When New
Jersey challenged that law, it went all
the way up the legal ladder, but the
Supreme Court decided not to hear the
case. So, alas, no overturn of the feder-
al law.
But a federal appeals court just
below the Supreme Court said nothing

was preventing New Jersey from re-
pealing its own ban and not regulating
the industry – much like the states of
Washington and Colorado do with
marijuana.
So last week, that’s what Christie
did. He repealed the state ban on
sports betting and said New Jersey
won’t regulate, license or authorize
sports betting officially. Acting state
Attorney General John Hoffman said,
in fact, that the state will be telling
casinos and tracks that they won’t be
held liable for sports wagering.
It’s not the avenue that Christie, or
any one else at the state level, wanted
to take, but it seems as though it’s the
road they feel they were forced down –
because they want sports wagering so
badly.
And can you blame them for this?

be a hit on a big tax money-maker for
the state.
Bets can’t be placed yet – a federal
court is expected to affirm Christie’s
position in a few weeks – and when
they are, you won’t be able to bet on
any professional sports event held in
New Jersey (no Jets, Giants or Devils
home games) or on any New Jersey
college team no matter where they
play (no Ray Rice alma mater). Every-
thing else, though, will be offered on
the big board.
While the NFL and other profession-
al sports leagues might fight this
move, it’s unlikely they will prevail
forever. Even NBA commissioner
Adam Silver said it’s “inevitable” and
that his league will “ultimately partic-
ipate in that.”
Will this be the shot in the arm New
Jersey’s gambling landscape needs?
Can it finally, once and for all, turn
into Las Vegas East? It’s hard to tell.

Zuleger and Beatrice Asbury Zuleger. On January 1, 1944, in Morristown, NJ, she
married Robert “Bob” Shepherd. They were devoted partners for over seventy years.
Also left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Mary Alice Milnes and husband
Gerry of Elkins, five grandchildren, Amelia Shepherd and husband Sergey Vershinin,
Bridget Smith and husband Steve, Sean Evoy and wife Paula, all of Ottawa, Canada,
Lydia Milnes and husband Ryan Withers of Huntington and Jesse Milnes and wife
Emily Miller of Valley Bend, seven great grandchildren, Maren, Carter, Aaron, Claire,
Dmitry, Neko and Beatrice and two nephews, Ralph and Donald Olwig.
Preceding Chrys in death besides her parents was one son, John Shepherd and one
sister, Alice Olwig.
Prior to moving to Elkins seven years ago, Chrys and Bob lived in Moorestown, NJ
for sixty years. Chrys was active in the community, with Trinity Episcopal Church,
the Child Guidance Center, community theater, Girl Scouts, school board, garden
club and as a hospice volunteer. Chrys and Bob loved to entertain, play bridge and
travel the world.
Chrys’s request for cremation was honored and a memorial service will be held at
a later date.
