ZEN Optical Mouse

The Mouse is basically optical in nature, and hence uses this technology for
tracking. The date of manufacturing of the mouse is in the month of June in 2007,
which can be seen at the back of the cover. It basically uses a PS/2 (Personal
Systems) port which basically limits its usage and portability and makes it port
dependent. Works absolutely perfect with a mouse pad, but isnt smooth with
shiny polished surfaces. It basically has 3 buttons right, -left, and the scroll
wheels click too. The Mouse has been shown in figure 1. The assembly is held
firmly by 4 screws. The scroll wheel has a mechanical encoder like other MICE for
efficient browsing. The port is sometimes difficult to connect due to its PS/2
nature.

IC: ATA2188

The IC ATA2188 is an IC produced by ATLab. Basically it is an optical sensor IC
which replaces the TRACK BALL technology of the computer mouse.
Capturing SNAPSHOTS of the scroll surface at 1,700 times per second it
calculates 3-pixel movement per frame to produce 5,100 pixel movements
per second with the internal 6MHz oscillator. With internal 12MHz oscillator,
the sensor captures snapshots of the work surface at 3,400 times per
second, calculates 3-pixel movement per frame, and produce 10,200 pixel
movements per second.
Features:
I. Single 5.0 volt power supply
II. On chip LED drive TR
III. 6MHz/12MHz selectable internal oscillator included (No additional
OSC needed)
IV. PS/2 interface included (No additional MCU needed)
V. High speed motion detection
VI. 3 Button (Left, Middle, Right) and Scrolling Wheel application

Applications:
i. Mice for desktop PCs, Workstations, and notebook PCs
ii. Other Integrated input devices

Dimensions: 1.7inches x 3.1inches
Price: $0.41 or 25.63

Scroll Wheel
The scroll wheel, its mechanical encoder and the 3
rd
micro
switch are like one system that performs efficient
scrolling. The axis of the wheel has a shaft thats directly
connected with the mechanical rotary. The speed of this
rotation and direction is in turn interpreted by the
encoder. To create sufficient amount of friction for good
rolling the scroll wheel has rubber on its outer periphery
Price: 8. 4/- (encoder 11mm) 10/- (scroll wheel + rubber)

Total cost as evaluated from the above table: 205.31
Cost of assembling, printing logo (sticker) and verification: 25
Hence total cost: 230.31

Conclusion
After stripping the mouse and having listed out its components and their prices
(when bought in bulk, as does the company), we find that the total cost of the
mouse is 230.31
The retail price was 313/- when it was bought on 15/11/2005
The wholesale price: 299/-
So on an overall basis, the price is listed around 35.9% more than the production
cost. Here we must also keep in mind that there is a huge capital involved in:
Setting up the company,
Creating sufficient profits so as to continue with the productions,
Payments of the Non-Technical labor which is involved in maintaining the
inventory data necessary.
