1. SystemDescription
This power management system (PMS) is performed by a computerized generator
automatic control functionsPLC CONTROL SYSTEM: generator voltage monitoring,
bus voltage and frequency monitoring, generator synchronizing (Paralleling), load sharing
control and load shift control.
The PMS has the following features:
The PMS is an extremely easy to us and highly reliable total system.
The PMSis composed of the one touch screen and PLC, Synchronizer, transducer. And
each device are installed in switchboard under common section.
The PMSis responsible for overall management of the generating plant.
It has an automatic synchronizing/automatic load sharing function, automatic generator
start and changeover commands, and power management functions.
It is used to automate plants with unattended machinery rooms and performs efficient
power management for super-rationalization plants.
System design based on two principles; manual control should override automatic
controlandcontrol system should be isolated or separated from safety and protective
systems, so that the safety of the ship's electric power system and the ship herself will
be secured even if the worst happens to the control system.
The PMScontrols generating plant centralized so that extremely high level of power
supply reliability is achieved.

2.2 Synchronizer
2.2.1 Description
The synchroniser is applied for synchronisation of a generator to the busbar and closing
of its circuit breaker when the voltage difference, the slip frequency and the phase angles
are within the preset limits. The synchroniser can be applied in conjunction with a wide
range of prime movers, as its control pulses may be set to fit several types - from slowly
reacting diesel engines to swiftly reacting gas turbines.

The synchroniser measures the busbar and generator voltages and frequencies and
compares these, plus compares their phase angles. It controls the generator frequency,
till it matches the busbar frequency. In order to determine phase accordance between the
generator and the busbar, the synchroniser calculates a phase angle advance based on
the circuit breaker closing time and the slip frequency. When the phase difference is
within this olerance the synchroniser transmits a closing signal for the generator
circuit breaker allowing time for this to close.

2.2.3 Self-monitoring:
The unit is equipped with a self-monitoring function. The self-monitoring function
supervises the microprocessor and hereby verifies if the programme is running
correctly.

3. PMS functions
3.1Dieselgeneratormanuallycontrol
3.1.1Dieselgeneratormanuallystart&ACBclosuretodeadbus
Thefollowingdescribes,asanexample,stepstoplaceDG1ontoadeadbus.
Turn the DG1s mode select switch on the No.1 diesel generator panel to MANU position,
check the preparation for starting the generator engine has been made satisfactory(the
READYTOSTARTindicatorlampisturnedon).
Press the ENGINE START pushbutton on the No.1 diesel generator to start gensets, as the
diesel engine accelerates to synchronous speed, the generator voltage will build up and the
RUNNINGindicatorlampontheNo.1dieselgeneratorpanelwillbeturnedon.
Check if the required generator voltage and frequency is reached with the voltmeter and
frequency meter for No.1 diesel generator panel, operating theVOLTMETER SELECT
switch on the No.1 diesel generator panel is set to each phasetophase position. If the
generatorvoltageisotherthanspecified,adjustitwiththemanualvoltageregulatorcontrols.
If the frequency is higher than the rated value, turn the GOVERNORcontrol switch to
LOWER position to decrease the generator frequency and adjust it to the rated value. If
the frequency is lower than the rated value, adjust it to the rated value by setting the
GOVERNORcontrolswitchto RAISE position.
Check the bus voltage and frequency by the double voltage and frequency meters on the
synchro panel, and the meters indicate zero. On confirmation of this, presss the ACB
CONTROLpushbuttonontheNo.1dieselgeneratorpanelorsynchropanel toCLOSE to
placeNo.1dieselgeneratorontoadeadbusC.

3.1.2Dieselgeneratormanuallystart&synchro
The following describes, as an example, steps to place No.2 diesel generator onto a live bus
servedbyNo.1dieselgenerator.
Turn the DG2s mode select switch on the No.1 diesel generator panel to MANU position,
check the preparation for starting the generator engine has been made satisfactory(the
READY TO START indicator lamp is turned on), press the ENGINE START pushbutton on
the No.2 diesel generator to start gensets, as the diesel engine accelerates to synchronous
speed, the generator voltage will build up and the RUNNING indicator lamp on the No.2
dieselgeneratorpanelwillbeturnedon.
Compare the incoming generator voltage with the bus voltage by charging the switch and
compare the incominggenerator frequency with the busfrequency by switch too. If they are
not equal, adjust the generator voltage/frequency to the bus voltage/frequency (assumed to
betheratedvalue).
Observing the synchroscope / synchro lamp and operating the GOVERNORcontrol
switch for No.2 diesel generator to theRAISEposition and adjust the frequency of the
No.2 diesel generator so that it exceeds the bus frequency by 0.5 to 1.0Hz. Then
gradually lower the generator frequency until the synchroscope pointer should rotate in
FAST direction and complete one rotation in 3 to 4 seconds and synchronization check
lamp flickers at intervals of 3 to 4 seconds, (This will result in the difference between bus
and generator frequencies being approximately 0.3Hz). Timing the closure of No.2 diesel

generator ACB to occur at the exact instant of synchronism. Press the ACB CLOSE
pushbutton to close No.2 diesel generator a little prior to the synchronism.
When two generators are on line, you must operate theirGOVERNORcontrol switches
simultaneously to RAISE (frequency up) or to LOWER (frequency down),
operation of only one switch transfers load from one generator to the other rather than
changing the frequency.

3.1.3Dieselgenertormanuallyloadshift&ACBopen,Enginestop
a. The following describes, as an example, the case where No.1 diesel generator is removed
fromthebuswhenDG1andDG2areonline.AdjusttheDG1sGOVERNORcontrolswitchto
LOWERandDG2stoRAISE.
ThislightensthekWloadonNo.1dieselgeneratorandincreasesthekWloadonNo.2diesel
generatori.e.,loadonNo.1dieselgeneratorisshiftedtoNo.2dieselgenerator.
WhentheloadonNo.1dieselgeneratorisreducedtoabout5%ofitsratedkWoutput(check
the power meter), press the ACB OPEN pushbutton to remove No.1 diesel generator from
thebus.
Then, adjust the bus frequency to the rated value as necessary by operating DG2s
GOVERNORcontrolswitchtoLOWERortoRAISE.
Press the ENGINE STOP pushbutton to stop DG1 manually.
b. The following describes, as an example, the case where No.1 diesel generator is removed
from the bus when DG1 and SG1 are on line in short time. Adjust the DG1s GOVERNOR
controlswitchtoLOWER.
WhentheloadonNo.1dieselgeneratorisreducedtoabout5%ofitsratedkWoutput(check
the power meter), press the ACB OPEN pushbutton to remove No.1 diesel generator from
thebus.
Press the ENGINE STOP pushbutton to stop DG1 manually.

3.2Dieselgeneratorsemiautocontrol
3.2.1Dieselautomaticallystart&ACBclosuretodeadbus
Thefollowingdescribes,asanexample,stepstoplaceDG1ontoadeadbus.
Turn the DG1s mode select switch on the No.1 diesel generator panel to AUTO position,
check the preparation for starting the generator engine has been made satisfactory(the
READYTOSTARTindicatorlampisturnedon).
Press AUTO START/SYNCHRO illuminated pushbutton on the No.1 diesel generator to start
gensets,aftergeneratorisrunning,whilevoltageestablishtoratedvalue,PMSautomatically
closes generator breaker, then generator supplies power to bus C. If start fail/voltage not
established/ACBnonclose,thenPMSgivesalarm.

3.2.2Dieselgeneratorautomaticallystart&synchro
The following describes, as an example, steps to place No.2 diesel generator onto a live bus
servedbyNo.1dieselgenerator.
The MODE SELECTswitch on the each diesel generator panel is set toAUTO
position and indicator lamp 1 ST STAND-BY or 2ND STAND-BY or 3

While the No.1 diesel generator supply the power to the main bus, turn the MODE
SELECT switch to AUTO position on the NO.2 diesel generator panel, confirm No.2
diesel generator is remote and ready, Press the AUTO START/SYNCHRO pushbutton
on the No.2 diesel generator panel to start the diesel engine, at the same time, the DG2
AUTO START/SYN indicator lamp is turned on , after the No.2 diesel generator running.
While voltage establish to rated value, and busbar is alive, PMS gives automatic synchro
command, while meets synchro condition, synchronizer gives automatic close command,
then generator supplies power to busbar in parallel, load sharing automatically, at the
same time, the DG2 AUTO START/SYN indicator lamp is turned off.. If start fail/voltage
not established/ACB nonclose/auto synchro fail, PMS gives alarm.

3.2.3Dieselgeneratorautomaticallyloadshift&ACBopen,Enginestop
The following describes, as an example, the case where No.1 diesel generator is removed
when DG1 and DG2 are in parallel operation.
The MODE SELECTswitch on the each diesel generator panel is set to AUTO
position .
Press the LOAD SHIFT pushbutton on the No.1 diesel generator panel, at the same
time, the LOAD SHIFT indicator lamp is turned on, PMS gives automatic load transfer
command, adjust the No.1 diesel generator speed automatically, while the No.1 diesel
generator power is less than 5% rated power, PMS gives automatic open command, the
No.1 diesel generator disconnects, at the same time, the LOAD SHIFT indicator lamp is
turned off. After 3 minutes (adjustable), No.1 diesel generator stops automatically, at the
same time, the LOAD SHIFT indicator lamp is turned on , then the engine stopped, at
the same time the LOAD SHIFT indicator lamp is turned off.
Note: if the load on the generator to remain on line is expected to reach 90% or more if its
rated kW output as a result of automatic laod shift control operation the pushbutton
LOAD SHIFT has no effect.

3.3Shaftgeneratormanuallycontrol
3.3.1Shaftgeneratormanuallyexcite&ACBclosuretodeadbus
Thefollowingdescribes,asanexample,stepstoplaceSG1ontoadeadbus.
TurntheMODESELECTswitchontheNo.1shaftgeneratorpaneltoMANUposition,
confirmthemainengineisconstantspeed,namelyinshaftgeneratormode.Turntheselect
switchofEXCITATIONtoONposition,aftergeneratorisrunning,checkvoltagebymeter,
whilevoltageestablishtoratedvalue,pressACBCLOSEpushbuttonontheNo.1shaft
generatorpanelorSynchropanel,thengeneratorsuppliespowertobusA.

3.3.2Shaftgeneratormanuallyexcite,synchroandsubareapowersupply
The following describes, as an example, steps to place No.1 shaft generator onto a live bus
servedbydieselgenerator.
TurntheMODESELECTswitchontheNo.1shaftgeneratorpaneltoMANUposition,
confirmthemainengineisconstantspeed,namelyinshaftgeneratormode.Turntheselect
switchofEXCITATIONtoONposition,aftergeneratorisrunning,checkvoltagebymeter,
whilevoltageestablishtoratedvalue,andbusAisalive,turnthesynchroselectswitchtothe

predefinegensets(SG1),adjustDGsspeedandvoltagemanually,lookovermeterand
synchronoscope,whilemeetssynchrocondition,presstheACBCLOSEpushbuttononthe
No.1shaftgeneratorpanelorSynchropanelforSG2,thengeneratorsuppliespowerto
busbarinparallel.Ifneedsubareapowersupply,opentherelevantbustiebreaker.
3.3.3Shaftgeneratormanuallyloadshift&deexcite
Thefollowingdescribes,asanexample,thecasewhereNo.1shaftgeneratorisremovedfrom
the bus when SG1 and DG are on line in short time. Adjust the DGs GOVERNOR control
switchtoRAISE.
TurntheMODESELECTswitchontheNo.1shaftgeneratorpaneltoMANUposition,adjust
theD/GsgovernorswitchtoRAISE,checkDG1spowermeter,whiletheDG1spowerisless
than5%ratedpower,pressACBOPENpushbuttonontheNo.1shaftgeneratorpanelor
synchropanel,theACBdisconnected,thenturntheselectswitchofEXCITATIONtoOFF
position,theSG1deexcited.

3.4Shaftgeneratorsemiautocontrol
