ALEXANDRIA LIGHTHOUSE FINDINGS IN 1994

L: Doctor Khalil, please tell about Alexandria lighthouse, how you find it in 1991?
E.K. : Actually it was 1994, but of course we looked at the site before. We knew from previous docu-
ments, from Egypt history, from sport diver, from early documents in 20 century about something that
there are some underwater archeology in this area. But none started in detail it before. So in 1994 group
of specialists emerged and started its project to explore all the remain in this area.
L: Was it initiated by community, by public organization (as it says in internet people of Alexandria
sounds alert of placing consort) or was it initiated by government?
E.K.: No, it was initiated by the French Centre of Alexandrian studies, directed by the French professor
Jean-Yves Empereur
L: Who was initiated the search as a personal, or a coordinator, head of a project?
E.K.: The idea started because government, Egypt government wanted to protect area around fortress
near the city. And there was a construction plan for placing block of concrete in the water to prevent
damage from waves, and protect citizen and ground and underwater heritage near fortress. So, before
placing blocks in the water, we want to make sure that there is nothing underneath the blocks that could
be damaged by this. So this is how the started the project.
L: I will insist once more - because it is very interesting to know the name do unnamed hero who was
initiate this careful idea of look underwater before placing blocks, or was it idea ha come out from many
people in one moment?
E.K.: Please understand - people knew that underwater archeology things is placed at that place - but
no one realized how much and how big they are. People see 2-3 statues, but without digging and look
specialist at this place.
L: And one can imagine how much archeology artifact down there?
E.K. : Absolutely - nobody see or think about. Group started with mostly French group with few spe-
cialists of Egyptian archeologists, someone from government, some archeologists from University, group
of volunteers and me.
L: Who was you at this moment?
E.K. I was just a diver-specialist to this moment and was asked by French specialist to be involved in
process.
L: You was a diver to this moment?
E.K. Yes. I was many years diver to this moment.
L: When you started to dive?
E.K.: I started diving in 1987
L When you understand that site near fortress o fKateBay is really Lighthouse place? On which day of
expedition?
E.K.: We started April 1994. It was 24 of April as i recall it.. It was the first season only. And in the first
day, at the frist dive we found may be 6 or 7 statues including huge one which is stand in fro of Alexan-
dria. During next dives we found hundreds of columns, blocks and statues.

L: Magazines wrote that this is Poseidon, God that Stratus placed in top of lighthouse ?
E.K. No, no. This is one of the Ptolemie from the Hellenistic Kingdom in Egypt, we believed it could be Ptolemy the II who
built the Lighthouse.
L.: So, what is exactly date you realized this place with statues is lighthouse?
E.K.: Well, we khow that Lighthouse is close to the port of Alexandria, close to this location, and we also knew from
ancient history that lighthouse was hit by two earthquakes in 4 century AD and 14 century AD. This two lighthouse hit it and
destroyed it.
Thursday 4
So, we knew that there were no big striation except the Phaross Lightjouse in this area. And this big statues shoal belong
th to
lighthouse, or least most of them belong to lighthouse.
L: So it was amazed after remember and archives - but you did not believe at the first moment?
E.K. Yes, it was amazing what we find underwater. First impression was that we ust found few statues near to port and
KateBay fort. In 1962 British archeologist. Very famous archeologist Dr. Honor Frost. She came and visited Alexandria, and
even dived at this site. After that there was published an article in saying that she saw about 13 statues only underwater.
L: I red a paper that an Egyptian diver sportsman was a first whose see big statue in the water?
E.K.: Yes, he was a first man. And we even have a map with draft and hand made. Very simple map of what he found under-
water. But mostly precised place of big statue position. It was in 1962 also. We used his map as well. But of course we found
many things more that was mentioned in the map.
L: What did you do first season?
E.K. We have plastics signs. Special archeology sign, that should be position at the all artifacts. And I think all 1st season
we do only that. Just putting numbers. number. and numbers. We should account how many, there and what precisely is
positioning underwater. Lot of them, I think over 3000.
L: Fro myself and readers of the magazine - season is ho much months?
E.K. For that season as far as i remember It was like 2 or 3 months. And finished maybe June or July. But after that every
year the French work group work at the site.
L.: Interesting. Can I ask - why French group? Egypt government did not provide you with the resources? or what?
E.K. Yes, a French group worked in Egypt in many many years, and we have very good relation with us. They helping us
carefully excavating the Egyptian sites. And many of the sites, not only this site. Many, many other sites.
L.: They do only science work? What was their interest? Friday 5
th

E.K.: Yes, scientific mission. Ordinary scientific mission. They can not take any artifact out of Egypt
L.: So. time is going. !st year, 2nd year. What was the most interesting case at this site?
E.K. : First 5 minutes of diving was most expressive. We found lot of big statues.
It was very exciting than we found Sphinxes.
And more statues.
Huge colums. Massive capitals. It was very unusual underwater.
L.: And what was the weather and stage of water at this period? Gods helped you?
E.K.: Usually the weather at this site is not bad. It is stable weather. Ussually. April. May. June. So we used work everyyear
at this time.
L.: But you remember what was at the first dives weather?
