Leading Greek Structural
Consultancy
Over the past 25 years JM&A has established itself as
one of the leading structural engineering consultancies
in Greece. Prominent Greek and international architects,
responsible for high-prole and challenging projects, have
turned to JM&A for solutions which are both high-quality
and cost-efective as well as inventive, practical and above
all reliable.
The architects preferred
Consultancy
JM&A takes a particular pride in providing the architect with
a broad range of conventional and inventive solutions to
best meet client requirements. Where the contractor calls
for modications to the original design JM&A is there to
support the architect in meeting critical time constraints.
WHO
WE ARE
J. MARNERIS & ASSOCIATES
An efcient
multi-disciplinary
delivery team
Unlike some other multi-disciplinary
consultancies the quality of overall design is
in no way compromised by any insistence on
exclusively employing in-house expertise. JM&A
will always meet the brief in the most efective
manner possible, calling on a roster of outside
experts and has indeed established a lengthy
and proven track record in such collaboration
in order to ofer the client a maximised and
fully co-ordinated proposal and thus a keen
competitive edge.
Cutting edge
design
JM&A has the in-depth structural engineering
expertise to produce the cutting edge design
demanded by the architect in combining ge-
ometry and materials. Buildings undertaken to
date range from hospitals and shopping malls
to state of the art retrots (upgrades), which
breathe new life into old hospitals, schools, ho-
tels or other buildings, both public and private,
where uninterrupted functionality is required.
WHO
WE ARE
J. MARNERIS & ASSOCIATES
Advanced
seismic design
As the Mediterranean area is seismically active,
seismic design is a prerequisite of most JM&A
projects. Cost-efective design for both new
and existing building retrots is based on linear
/ non-linear dynamic analysis. JM&A special-
izes in the latest technological developments
for seismic isolation (base isolators, tune mass
dampers etc) in order to achieve
zero tolerance of cracking on the interior
decoration of sensitive structures (theatres,
hospitals etc);
uninterrupted functionality of recovery-criti-
cal strategic structures such as hospitals.
Seismic isolation was not unknown to the an-
cient Greeks: the Parthenon was indeed the
predecessor of todays seismically isolated
buildings, having a thin layer of sand in its
foundations emulating a seismic isolator.

Innovative and cost-efective
restoration of ageing
structures
JM&A has had extensive involvement in retro-
tting (upgrading) existing structures, mainly
in order to achieve compliance with todays
demanding seismic codes. This has led to the
development of our patent proprietary meth-
odology (PARSANT) which was rst presented
at the 14
th
World Conference on Earthquake
Engineering in Beijing in 2008.
This low-cost innovative methodology makes
it possible to upgrade a building without inter-
rupting activity, thus providing a cost-efective
alternative to hitherto unavoidable demolition.
This methodology has been incorporated in
the stringent Greek Codes of Practice for ret-
rots of existing structures.

Rather than demolish and rebuild, Retrotting
enables the replacement of an ageing struc-

to its daily functions.
The original framing structure may be even
strengthened and be able to comply with
stricter seismic codes, and higher loading
conditions (eg. through addition of oors, or
changes of use).

In order to prolong the life of this old hospital
(9.600 m

the reduction of the longitudinal side of the
building that was excessively long. To this end
two expansion joints were introduced.

C. Advisory Work
a. Seismic Protection
Seismic engineering design capability involving
Base isolation and Passive Energy dissipation
through Dampers/ Tune Mass Dampers (pro-
cured from / designed In co-operation with
reputable International manufacturers):
BASE ISOLATION OF BUILDINGS
Rubber bearings installed in a buildings
foundations isolate the above ground part
of the building from any ground movement,
thus greatly reducing the magnitude of seismic
forces impacting the building. The resulting
marginally increased construction cost ( by
circa 5%) ensures that damages that may be
normally seen in non- structural elements
during an earthquake, are entirely avoided
irrespective of an earthquakes magnitude.
CUTTING EDGE
TECHNOLOGIES
J. MARNERIS & ASSOCIATES
ANTI-SEISMIC DAMPERS
These are passive seismic energy absorbing devices, in-
stalled directly into a buildings framing system (Fig. 1), or
inserted in the diagonal members of a PARSANT panel
(Fig. 2, please see section b. that follows). They are sophis-
ticated devices - usually of the uid viscous or friction
type- and may absorb up to 40% of the seismic energy,
thus relieving the existing structure by an equal energy
amount. The structural analysis of such structures normally
employs non-linear methods through the use of specialized
Software.
TUNE MASS DAMPERS
These are independent oscillators, usually mounted on the
top level of buildings. During an earthquake, by swinging
in the opposite direction to that of the existing framing
structure, Tune Mass Dampers achieve a considerable
reduction in seismic forces and deections.

PARSANT Retrot
Methodology*
Subject methodology was awarded a pat-
ent in 2004, and was rst presented inter-
nationally in the 14th World Conference on
Earthquake Engineering in Beijing, China
(October 2008). The Methodology has
been incorporated in the Greek Codes for
Strengthening / Repairing existing buildings
since 2008.
Strong steel panels are placed around a buildings out-
side perimeter and are rigidly connected to its existing
framing system. Dampers may be incorporated along the
diagonal members of the panels for seismic energy ab-
sorption purposes.
PARSANT is low cost, requires short construction time
and does not have an impact on a buildings internal
daily function.
Applications of the method include repairs of damaged
buildings, renovation of buildings, new oor additions,
and possibly increased loading assumptions.

the 10 year preceding period, had acquired signicant international ex-
perience: rst working for the International Consulting rm FRANC BA-
SIL INC (both in Athens and in Saudi Arabia), and subsequently for the
highly respected Greek Consulting rm AMTE SA of Professor S. Angeli-
dis (Athens).
The Team
JM & As long serving and closely knit team of Qualied Structural engi-
