How CST Works
CST is a multi-stage gear reducer with an internal clutch.
It is designed for the smooth starting of high-inertia loads
on long conveyor belts. Its major parts are a reducer gear
assembly, internal clutch, oil cooling system, hydraulic
system, and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
I
Motor rotation is transmitted to the sun gear via
the helical input gears.
I
Sun gear engages the planet pinions.
I
Ring gear/brake ring rotates in absence of pressure
to the annular piston.
I
Friction plates rotate with the ring gear/brake ring
(an opposing plate separates each friction plate).
I
Force (on the plates) is controlled by hydraulic
pressure on the annular piston.
I
Pressure causes the piston to extend from the
piston housing.
I
Output shaft is fixed due to resistance from the
conveyor load.
I
Piston receives control pressure compressing the clutch pack.
I
Ring gear/brake ring rotation slows as the output shaft begins to turn and the conveyor belt moves.
I
Transmission of motion and torque from the motor to the CST output shaft can be precisely controlled.
Performance and Productivity Advantages
I
Clutch pack in the output section absorbs shocks and protects the motor,
gearbox, bearings, belt idlers, pulleys, and splices.
I
On multiple drives systems, motor kW load share is done within +/-2% to
minimize the loads and stresses on all the conveyor components.
I
CST offers extended acceleration and deceleration of the conveyor
belt with any load condition, as dictated by dynamic analysis.
I
Modular, flexible, PLC-based control system is supported by
Rockwells worldwide customer service centers.
