1 Introduction

Project 06 had us find design flaws in the dimensioning in an engineering

drawing and fix them. Then we had to do all of the other typical things (render,
animate) in Pro/E.

2 Problem Statement
Find all the problems in the dimensioning of the wrench drawing and fix them.
Then create the parts and assembly in Pro/E. Also render the assembly and
animated it.

3 Result
3.1 Phase I Drawing Problems
Problem Part Problem
#
1 Handle Hole at end has conflicting radius and diameter
2 Handle Height of 2 is too small
3 Housing Hole width is 13/32 at one view
4 Housing Wall thickness has conflicting dimensions: 1/8 and 7/64
5 Housing Hole height of 1 conflicts with other dimensions
6 Housing Unspecified angles (not 90O)
7 Screw Length does not fit housing (but may be room for
movement)
8 Pin Length is too long to fit in housing

3.2 Phase II Redesign
Instead of tabulating the fixed dimensions I scanned and edited the original
drawing. Revisions are in squares:

Figure 3: The Wrench Screw from different views (a), and (b)

Figure 4: The Wrench Pin from different views (a), and (b)
Creating these parts weren’t very difficult, but the revisions I originally made in
phase 1 did not work when assembling the wrench; so I changed them to fit.

3.4 Phase II Part B

Figure 5: The Wrench Parts Drawing

The drawing part of this project wasn’t very hard either. The drawing shows the
final dimensions and how they differ from both the original flawed drawing and
my first revision.

3.5 Phase II Part C

Figure 6: The Wrench Assembly from views (a), (b), and highlighting the unseen pin in
(c)

(a) (b)
Figure 7: The Wrench Exploded Assembly from different views (a), and (b)
The assembly part of this project was easy as well, but that is because the
assembly feature in Pro/E is very easy to use.

7
3.6 Phase II Part D

(a) (b)
Figure 8: Two different Wrench Renderings (a), and (b)
The rendering part of this project had some difficulties, but it is because
rendering in Pro/E is a time-consuming process that requires a lot of guesswork.
Making the parts the proper materials was easy because we had guides to help
us create many materials.

3.7 Phase II Part E

(a) (b)
Figure 9: The Wrench Animation screenshots with no rendering (a), and
rendering (b)
The animation part was also easy, due to its use of ease in Pro/E. But when
creating the animation with rendered frames Pro/E crashed on me three separate
times. And the best I could do was get an animation that goes black and cuts out.

4 Discussion
This Phase I of this project was easy, but I feel that there wasn’t much time to do
it. It was given only one class before it was due (over a weekend too). I wouldn’t
had as much a problem with it, but the project was not available online till the day
it was given. Phase II was pretty easy, but we still have to animate with rendered
frames, which is still only a check-box different than animating without, but takes
an enormous amount of time.

5 Conclusion
The drawing of the wrench had a few mistakes, some obvious and some that
required mathematics to confirm. But some were conflicting dimensions, so it is
hard to choose one or the other without knowing the designer’s original intentions
upon drawing it. Once I created the parts and tried to assemble them, I found my
revisions to not work, so I revised them again.
