to fulfill foreign dreams
In the present day scenario, women, who earlier were a part of family migration or were being
sponsored by male members (preferably father, brother, husband), are now choosing the nursing
profession as a means to move abroad independently with the ambition not only to settle there
permanently, but also to sponsor and support other family members at a later stage.
In exchange for sponsoring courses and visa fee, women are taking husbands to countries like
Canada, Australia, US and New Zealand, after getting NRI tag.
The high demand for nurses as brides and otherwise has resulted in three fold jump in private
nursing institutes in last decade. In 2005-06 , there were 138 private and 10 govt. colleges in Punjab
and in 2013-14 there is a threefold increase in nursing institutes resulted in 559 private and 26
government institutes.

colleges in Punjab by INC
INC has refused approval to seven nursing colleges in state BSc (nursing) but state
government had allowed these colleges to admit students without waiting for the INC
approval.
Two of seven nursing colleges had not even applied for INC approval.
As per INC guidelines, any institute wanting to open a nursing college or school has to first
take a no-objection certificate from state, then INC undertakes the first inspection to assess its
suitability. After the receipt of the permission to start nursing programme from INC, the
institute shall obtain approval from the state nursing council and the examination board or
university. The institute can admit students only after this permission has been taken.
In this case, however, these seven colleges managed to get permission from state council
bypassing INC.
