During shut-down the machine must be cleaned at regular intervals. The relevant
covers are to be removed. The interior of the machine has to be blown out with
dry, oil-free compressed air and then be cleaned. Chemical agents must not be
used since they will cause damage to the winding insulation.
Depending on the degree and type of contamination, different cleaning methods
are recommended:
1. Drv dust and di r t
- Extract dust by means of a vacuum cleaner.
- Loosen and exhaust larger dirt deposits by means of a pencil or brush.
- Blow out residual dirt with dry, oil-free compressed air.
2. Wet dust and di r t
- Hot-air drying or oven drying at abt. 100C.
- Subsequent cleaning as described above.
3. Oil or gr easy, sticky deposi t s
- Loosen dirt deposits by means of a spattle.
- Clean subsequently with dry piece of cloth.
- Clean still-dirty surfaces with pencil and white gas.
- Collect dissolved dirt by using a dry, clean piece of cloth.
Cleaning of the brush holders and the brush holder insulation from carbon dust
or dry dust is of great importance.
All current-carrying screwed or bolted joints are to be checked for tight fitting.

Dryi ng of wi ndi ngs
Due to long shipping times, formation of condensation water, storage in humid air, or
after longer shut-down periods, the insulation resistance of the windings may assume
inadmissible low values. Therefore, the insulation resistance of the windings to the motor
housing must always be measured prior to commissioning.
1. Meas ur ement of i nsul at i on r esi st ance
The insulation resistance of the windings to frame is measured by means of a
megaohmmeter (megger), the voltage being at least 500 Volts. Before starting
measurement, the connecting leads and, if installed, capacitive suppressors are to
be disconnected. Satisfactory dielectric strength values, measured on new
machines in our works, lie between 20 and 100 MQ. This value will, however,
drop to about half the magnitude without being detrimental to the performance
of the machine. The dielectric strength value is very temperature-dependent, i.e.
a temperature increase of about 10C will halve the insulation resistance value.
Thus, the insulation resistance is always to be measured at the same winding
temperature so that any changes in value can be detected.
Gui de val ue for i nsul at i on r esi st ance
In case of low-voltage windings up to 660 volts, the insulation resistance should
be at least 1000 OhmA'^olt. This value is based on a winding temperature of 25C
to 30C.
If, due to humid or contaminated windings, a lower value is measured, the
windings are to be cleaned carefully and subsequently dried. After each drying
operation, the insulation resistance is measured again at the same winding
temperature in order to verify any improvement. Perhaps a more efficient drying
operation will have to be carried out.
