Advantages-> its widely supported
standard often used when scanning
Both Mac and Windows support it
Disadvantages->TIFF is not supported
by web brewers
It doesnt compress automatically so it
will create a lager file
Examples-> when scanning something
into the computer.

Name-> Portable Network Graphics
Advantages-> PNG is a platform its an
independent format
PNG can support high-level of
compression and transparency
PNG is also supported by more recent
web browsers
Disadvantages-> older browsers and
programs may not support PNG
As an internet file format PNG offers
no support for-multi-images files or
animated files
Examples-> when you are making a logo for the company on Photoshop.

Name: Window Bitmap
Raster/vector: Raster
Advantages: Supports a wide range
of colour.
The BMP format is widely
compatible with existing Windows
programs, especially older
programs.
Disadvantages: BMP does not
support compression, which results
in very large files.
Web browsers do not support BMP
files.
Only used by windows computers.

Advantages-> GIF is a widely supported
internet standard
Lossless compression and transparency
Animated GIF
Disadvantages-> It can only support 256
colours therefor some details and photo
realistic images will have a lose of colour
information.
Lossless compression and transparency are limited and inferior to other
formats
Examples-> when making an animated images

File-> .PSD
Name-> Photoshop Document
Raster or vector-> Raster
Advantages-> PSD allows images to be stored in
layer.
PSD files can be imported into other software
programmes such as after effects for special film
effects and titles.
You can also create and manipulate vector
graphic.
Disadvantages-> PSD is a very large file so will
need to be saved as a smaller file if you want to
share it.
PSD does not work with all programs.
Examples-> when working on photo and you want to come back to it and edit
it again.

File-> .CGM
Name-> Computer Graphics Metafile
Raster or vector-> Metafile (Raster and Vector)
Advantages-> Free file can be used on many systems
International standard
Disadvantages-> In some programs CGM needs a filter to convert it
Examples-> If you send it someone in a different country they can open

Name-> Portable Document
Format

Advantages-> Can be open on any
system and doesnt need to run
on a specific program.
Small file size it is easy to share.
Disadvantages->Cannot
manipulate image once they are
saved to this format
Examples-> when putting
something online that you dont
want anyone to manipulate.

Raster Graphics
Raster graphics use pixels to store the data.
Each square is a pixel. One pixel contains one bit of data and one colour.
If you zoom into a raster file you will see lots of pixels making up the
image.
Cameras and scanners will produce work in raster files so they will need
to stay as a raster file when being edited.
