A student team in a Business Statistics courses conducted an experiment to compare the

download times (in sec) of three different types of computers (MAC, DELL and iMAC) using
two browser types (IE or NC) available in the Institute library. Result from the
survey/experiment and summary statistics are given below in Tables 1A and 1B:
Table 1A:

1.
a) Fill up the missing entries (marked by ) in Table 2.
[5 points]
(Enter in Table 2 directly)

b) Test at 1% level of significance if
i. The interaction effect between the browser and the computer is significant;
[1 point]

ii. There is any significant difference across the different brands of computer.
[1 point]

2. Let
1
and
2
be the true mean time taken respectively using IE on MAC and NC on
DELL.
a) What is the best point estimate for
1
-
2
?
[1 points]

b) What is the (estimated) standard error of your estimate in part a above? (Hint:
Some entries in Table 2 may be handy)
[2 points]

c) Find 98% confidence interval for
1

3. We wish to find out if there is any difference in average download time between the
two browser types. (Ignore variation due to different computer types)
a. Carry at the appropriate 1-way ANOVA test at 1% level. Write down the
complete ANOVA table to arrive at your decision.

Decision:

b. How different would be the conclusion (specifically p-values) in case you carry
out two two-sample t-test to answer the above question. (You need not actually
carry out the test.)
[1 point]

4. Use an appropriate Non-parametric test to answer the above query (in question 3).
Ignore data (part of Table 1) from the iMAC machine to answer this part only. Carry
out the test at 10% level of significance (clearly write down the critical region)
against the alternative hypothesis that the average download time using IE is higher.
[6 points]

5. In this question we compare proportion of downloads taking less than 200 sec using
for the two browser type (again we ignore variation due to computer types). Test at
10% level of significance if the above two proportions are the same. (NB. While the
respective sample sizes are not very large, you may still use large sample Z-test,
which would be approximately valid, because the sample sizes are moderately large).
[5 points]

6. What are the mean and the sample standard deviation of download time (all
observations combined)? (Hint: Table 1B and Table 2 may be handy) Carry out a
goodness of fit test at 1% level of significance to verify if the download time (from
all machines and browsers combined) follows a NORMAL distribution. Use the
following groups for this purpose.
[2+4=6 points]

download time
< 150 sec
150 -200 sec
200 250 sec
250 -300 sec
> 300 sec

7. Test at 10% level significance the hypothesis that the third quartile of download time
required in DELL using NC is 5 minutes against the alternative that it is more than
that. Calculate the p-value of your test to arrive at your decision.
