There is one question that we often face from those encountering our work for
the rst time which is now threatening to become a constant irritant. Commenting
on the high standard of both the content and presentation of our publications,
people repeatedly ask suspiciously, sympathetically or occasionally enviously
where we get our funds, and in particular, which foreign organisation or
wealthy benefactor nances us.
This is a question that many Muslim organisations and Islamic publication
houses would be loath to answer, for fear of embarrassment, but we are in the
rare position of being able to categorically deny receiving any such sponsorship
from any source. And the truth of this answer has always bafed those who
doubt that we would be able to survive for so long, let alone produce such a
range and quality of new titles, without a sponsor to subsidise our publication
activity on a charitable basis, as is the case with so many Islamic organisations
today.
For more than a decade, we have depended entirely on the resources we have
been able to generate through sale of our books. This nancial independence is
both our greatest strength, for it allows us to decide what we want to publish
(or not to publish), and an obvious weakness, in that it limits our ability to take
the major step up required to become an internationally-recognised player in the
eld of Islamic publishing.
Despite this, however, we are continuing to expand our operations and
increasingly become known around the world. With more than 200 titles
now to our credit, we believe that this weakness of ours our deance of
the commonly-accepted model of sponsor backing for the supposedly non-
sustainable business of publishing serious books on Islam will in fact prove
to be the key factor enabling us to rise to even greater heights while allowing
us to strictly maintain the principle of publishing only quality books on Islam.
We hope and pray that this years catalogue, now in your hands, will prove to
be another small step towards fullling that mission, inshaAllah.

COHERENCE IN THE QURAN
A Study of Islahis Concept of
Nazm in Tadabur-i Quran
Mustansir Mir
A widely held view about the Quran is that
in its received form, it lacks coherence. Most
approaches to the Quran have remained atomistic
in character. Some Western scholars even
tried to rearrange the Quran to make it more
comprehensible. Muslim scholar Amin Ahsan
Islahi however rejects this view that Quran is
disjoined, and argues that the Quran possesses
nazm or coherence, which is both aesthetically
pleasing and carried profound hermeneutical
signicance. This is the rst detailed study of
Islahis contribution to Quranic exegesis, and
tries to assess his theory of Quranic coherence
as reected in his tafsir Tadabbur-i Quran."

THE OPENING CHAPTER
OF THE QURAN
Abul Kalam Azad
Translated by Syed Abdul Latif
Azads explanation (tafsir) of Surah al-
Fatihah, the rst chapter of the Quran,
explains the Quranic conception of God
in the light of the pattern of organisation
found in phenomenal nature. Rightly
regarded as Azads major contribution
to Islamic learning, this is a profound
exposition of Quranic thought.
BASIC CONCEPTS OF THE QURAN
Abul Kalam Azad
Edited and translated by Syed Abdul
Latif

his exegesis of Surah al-Fatihah (The
Opening Chapter) in his Tarjuman al-

the study of the Quran. Students of
the Quran will nd therein a store of
Quranic knowledge such as is not found

ABROGATION IN THE QURAN
AND ISLAMIC LAW
Louay Fatoohi
This book traces the development of the
concept of abrogation (naskh) from its most
basic form to the complex and multi-faceted
doctrine it has become. The book also critiques
the role of abrogation in rationalizing the
view that not all the Quranic revelation has
survived in the mushaf, i.e. the written record
of the Quran. This role makes understanding
abrogation an essential prerequisite for
studying the history of the Quranic text. This
book takes a practical approach by examining
specic popular abrogation claims, such
as the stoning penalty, the law on ghting
non-Muslims, and on inheritance. It is the
only modern study in English dedicated to
the subject, and is a suitable reference work
for both the expert and the general reader.

TOSHIHIKO IZUTSU (1914-1993)
Toshihiko Izutsu was born into a wealthy family in Japan. His father
was a calligrapher and a Zen Buddhist, and Izutsu became familiar
with meditation and koans (sayings and teachings followed by the Zens)
from an early age. Izutsu was a well known Japanese scholar on Islam,
having taught at Keio University, McGill University, Montreal and
the Iranian Imperial Academy of Philosophy, Tehran. Izutsus area of
study was wide, and more than thirty scholarly works in Japanese and
English are attributed to him, all of which demonstrate uniqueness of
his thought through the construction of complex theoretical arguments.
Complementing this brilliance was his mastery of over twenty languages,
including Hebrew, Persian, Chinese, Turkish, Sanskrit and Arabic,
in addition to many modern European languages. It was said that he
nished reading Quran in a month after beginning to learn Arabic.
In 1958, he completed translation of the Quran, for the rst time
directly from Arabic to Japanese. His translation is still renowned for its
linguistic accuracy and widely used for scholarly works.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
CONSERVATION OF HADITH
In the Light of the Sahifah of Hammam
ibn Munabbih
Dr Muhammad Hamidullah
Since the past century, orientalist works
had challenged the authenticity of Hadith
material (sayings of the Prophet), claiming
that these collections of hadiths were done
orally and therefore subject to misreporting
and alterations. Dr Hamidullah discovered
very early collections of hadiths preserved
in libraries in Turkey, France and Germany,
and on the basis of these, refuted the
misgivings spread by orientalists. This
work selects the collections of Hammam
ibn Munabbih, a disciple of a companion of
the Prophet to substantiate his arguments.

SAHIH AL-BUKHARI:
The Early Years of Islam
Translated by Muhammad Asad
This work comprises the historical chapters of
the most important compilations of Traditions,
Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari, and depicts the
beginning of the Prophets revelation, the
merits of his Companions and the early years
of Islam up to and including the decisive
turning point of Islamic history, the Battle of
Badr. The author had set out to translate the
whole of Sahih al-Bukhari but much of his
manuscripts were destroyed in the chaos that
followed the Second World War. It was not in
vain: in his own words, ten years spent on
analysing, translating and clarifying the Sahih
were a God-willed preparation for a work
which for a very long time had represented an
enticing dream to me: a new rendering into
English of the Message of the Quran...

Prophet & His Companions
AND MUHAMMAD IS HIS MESSENGER
The Veneration of the Prophet in Islamic Piety
Annemarie Schimmel
In order to understand Muslim piety it is necessary
to take into account the long history of the veneration
of Muhammad. Schimmel discusses aspects of his
life, birth, marriage, miracles, and heavenly journey,
all of which became subjects for religious devotions.
By using poetic texts and artistic expressions and by
examining daily Muslim religious practices, Schimmel
shows us the gentler side of Islamic religious culture,
providing a much-needed understanding of religion as
it is experienced and practiced in the Islamic world.
This is the rst book in English to deal with all aspects
of the veneration of the Prophet Muhammad. It is an
expanded version of Schimmels Und Muhammad Ist

ANNEMARIE SCHIMMEL (1922-2003)
Born in Erfurt, Saxony (Germany) on April 7, 1922, Dr Schimmel was a well-
known and inuential German scholar who wrote extensively on Islam, having
authored more than a hundred books on the subject. For her work on Islam, Susm
and Muhammad Iqbal, the government of Pakistan honored her with one of its
highest civil awards known as Hilal-e-Imtiaz or Crescent of Excellence. She was
showered with many other awards from many countries, but the 1995 prestigious
Peace Prize of the German Book Trade caused a controversy in Germany, as she
had defended the outrage of the Muslim world against Salman Rushdie and his

FIQH AL-ZAKAH
Yusuf al-Qaradawi
In Islam, Zakah is third only to the declaration
of faith in God and His Prophet, and the
ve daily prayers. Yet it has not attracted
the attention of modern Muslim scholars to
commensurate its importance and analyze its
laws taking into account the contemporary
issues and problems. This book by one of
the most authoritative contemporary Muslim
scholars is an extensive study of the Zakah, its
regulations and philosophy in the light of the
Quran and Sunnah, to show it is both a pillar
of religion as well as a practical application in
modern socio-economics.

OF ZAKAT
Farishta G de Zayas
In this work, the author carefully and
comprehensively examines the rules of Zakat
from the most authentic sources: the Quran,
the authentic hadiths and classical works
of the fuqaha (jurists). Since Zakat is a
religious obligation with a social and spiritual
function, it is incumbent on all individual
Muslims, especially Zakat administrators,
to acquire a thorough knowledge of its
fundamental principles and the law to its
implementation at state level. As such this
book should be an essential aid to Muslims

IMAM AL-SHATIBIS THEORY OF THE
HIGHER OBJECTIVES AND INTENTS
OF ISLAMIC LAW
Ahmad al-Raysuni
The most important means by which scholars
sought to restore the intimate contact between
Muslims and the Quran was to study the
objectives of Islam, the causes behind legal
rulings and the intentions and goals of the
Islamic Law. This book, translated from
the original Arabic, represents a pioneering
contribution presenting a comprehensive
theory of the objectives of Islamic Law in
its various aspects, as well as a painstaking
study of objectives-based thought as
pioneered by the father of objectives-based
jurisprudence, Imam al-Shatibi. The author
presents us with an important study of al-

ISTIHSAN
The Doctrine of Juristic Preference
in Islamic Law
Saim Kayadibi
This work constitutes a critical analysis of
classical and modern aspects of the concept
of Istihsan (juristic preference), an important
principle in Islamic legal legislation throughout
history. Although there has been many research
works on the subject, it still requires further
investigation on the role and nature of istihsan
with regard to a combination of classical
and modern approaches. Consisting of four
chapters, the author begins by introducing
some general principles of Islamic law, before
discussing the history of istihsan during the
time of the Prophet and his Companions. He
also analyses the validity of istihsan as a source
of law and discusses the differences among
scholars on its method of implementation.

THEORIES OF ISLAMIC LAW
The Methodology of Ijtihad
Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee
This book presents usul al-qh, or Islamic legal
theory, as comprising three major theories or
methodologies. Each had a distinct function to
perform in the development of Islamic law. The
rst theory is shown to be based on the operation
of general principles and the analytical method,
the methodology of the second incorporates
strict interpretation and analogy, while the third
theory is based on the purposes of the Islamic
shariah. The book presents the content of
Islamic legal theory in a manner that reects the
traditional approach, but takes into account the
needs of the modern lawyer, judge and scholar.

ISLAMIC LAW OF BUSINESS
ORGANIZATION: PARTNERSHIPS
Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee
The author attempts to spell out the Islamic
principles on which business enterprise should
be based especially in the area of partnership.
In this exercise, he displays a strikingly acute
awareness of Islamic laws on the subject.
This, however, is matched by an equally
striking awareness of the forms of business
organization in vogue in the contemporary
world. The work represents a serious scholarly
effort to sort out complicated questions, and
to enunciate Islamic principles relative to
business enterprise, and to apply them in the

A GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
OF THE QURAN
Syed Muzaffaruddin Nadwi
The Quran is not only a book of law, but also
contains historical facts and is replete with
names of certain nations, places and persons.
Can these names be placed in the context of the
present natural geography? Have they undergone
any changes? Natural calamities and the human
factor mean that historical changes do not
keep anything constant, especially when one is
referring to a subject which existed thousands of
years ago. This work, rst published 1936 and
based on an earlier work by Sayyid Sulaiman
Nadwi, aims to give a basic understanding of the
places and peoples mentioned in the Quran.
AVICENNA: HIS LIFE AND WORKS
Soheil M Afnan
Avicenna, or Ibn Sina, the tenth-century
Persian scientist-philosopher, is beyond doubt
the most provocative gure in the history of
thought. With a wideness of range, a vigour of
thought, and a unity of conception unequalled
among the phiosophists, his thoughts extended
far beyond the Eastern lands, giving rise to
the most complete philosophical system that
the Islamic world was to have. Avicennas
works can be of guidance to those in the East
who are meeting the challenge of Western
civilization; and to those in the West who
have yet to nd a basis on which to harmonize
scientic with spiritual values. This book
attempts to present them to the general reader.

Various aspects of the life and thought of
Imam al-Ghazali have yet to be adequately

Available literature on the subject is limited
within the views and the achievements of a
number of distinguished scholars in the modern
times. This work attempts to discover part
of the rich legacy of the Islamic reformers
and to shed some fresh light on the topic
of islah, or Islamic reform, as a distinctive

MUSIC AND SINGING
Imam Al-Ghazali
Translated by Duncan Black MacDonald
Are music and singing allowed in Islam? If
the answer is a denite yes or no, then why
has the question of its lawfulness become the
subject of debate among Muslim scholars for
centuries? In this treatise translated from the
eighteenth book of Imam Ghazalis Ihya Ulum
al-Din, readers get an insight into the pros
and cons of the controversy and be guided by
the greatest authority of traditional Islam none
other than Imam al-Ghazali. For al-Ghazali, it
is important to have true knowledge to reap the
benet of music. Those who have no sufcient
knowledge of God and His attributes, he writes,
are liable to apply what they hear both to
what is allowable and what is not allowable.

MUSLIM SAINTS AND MYSTICS
Episodes from the Tadhkirah al-Awliya
of Farid al-Din Attar
Translated by A J Arberry
The ascetic outlook and practice
characterised the life not only of Prophet
Muhammad himself, but many of his
earliest followers. Even at the height of the
spread of Islam and its astonishing military
conquests, many leading men withstood all
temptation to abandon the austere life of
the desert, and their example was admired
and emulated by multitudes of humbler
rank. This book, abridged from the famous
Tadhkirah al-Awliya by Farid al-Din Attar,
one of Persias greatest poets, devotes a
short chapter to each of the early Sus.

THE LIFE AND WORK OF
JALAL-UD-DIN RUMI
Afzal Iqbal
Rumi is perhaps the only example in world literature
of a devoted prose writer who suddenly burst forth
into poetry during middle age to become a truly great
mystical poet for all time. This book, a long-overdue
reckoning of his life and work, begins with a description
and examination of the living conditions in 13th-century
Persia. Building on this context, the author proceeds to
fully analyze the formative period of Rumis life leading
up to 1261 when he began the monumental work of
writing the Mathnawi. Toward the end of the book,
the author investigates Rumis thought and includes
translations of those portions of the Mathnawi that have
been hitherto unavailable in English. Combining an
unparalleled familiarity with the source material, a total
and critical understanding of the subject, and a powerful
and readable prose style, this is an extraordinary
study of a truly remarkable poet and mystic.

THE PROPHET JOSEPH IN THE QURAN,
THE BIBLE AND HISTORY
Louay Fatoohi
Surah Yusuf (Joseph) of the Qur'an deals almost
entirely with the story of this noble Prophet, his
brothers, and their father Prophet Jacob. Since
the revelation of the Quran fourteen centuries
ago, there have been numerous attempts to
interpret this surah. The present study is not
a review of previous exegetical attempts, but
a genuinely new look at the surah including
careful examination of the historical background
of its story and detailed comparison with the
corresponding Biblical narrative. While referring
to interpretations from classical exegetical
works, this book offers new insights into the
meanings and magnicence of this Quranic text.
MOSES AND PHARAOH IN THE BIBLE,
QURAN AND HISTORY
Maurice Bucaille
The holy scriptures of the three Abrahamic
religions share some of the main aspects of
historical events which happened after prophet
Abraham. One topic which reveals many such
shared aspects is the story of Moses who rose
up against the despotic Pharaoh. The events
during this period are important to the Muslims,
Jews and Christians, and in many cases form
the basis of the history and rituals of the three
religions. This work is a comparative study
of the Biblical and Quranic narrations of the
story of Moses and Pharaoh. In doing so, Dr
Bucaille, author of the best-seller The Bible,
the Quran and Science and other award-
winning works on scripture and hieroglyphics,
carefully avoids theoretical and speculative
views in an attempt to cope only with facts.

ISLAM AND THE WISDOMS OF
ASIAN RELIGIONS
Yamin Cheng
This book is a result of the authors many
years of personal reections on the relationship
between Islam and the wisdoms of China.
These wisdoms are the wisdoms of Buddhism,
Confucianism, and Taoism, and together, they
form the San Chiao, or Three Teachings, of
the Chinese worldview. Through his Chinese
legacy, the author tries to make connections
with the Islamic worldview, and nds they
are inter-related in many ways. The author
discovers that Chinese wisdoms and practices
are, to a large extent, Islamic. A Chinese who
enters Islam, therefore, need not abandon
his Chinese roots as he takes on the Islamic
identity. He is already, in many ways, a
Muslim, even before entering Islam.

THE FAMILY STRUCTURE IN ISLAM
Hammudah Abd al-Ati
The author deals with a wide array of topics
touching on religion, set roles and the family,
law, and social change, all of which are basic
issues in the structure of social life and arouse
the strongest feelings among people. The author
approaches these disputed questions with very high
qualications: a deep, personal familiarity with
Islam and a scholars knowledge of it as well as of
modern social science. He considers how religious
inspiration, law and social conditions during the
rst four centuries of Islam together shaped ideas
about what the family system of Muslims should
become. He squarely confronts the most difcult
issues of scholarship and morals concerning Islam,
such as plural marriage, modes of divorce, social
equality in mating, and sensuousness. He not
only sheds light on these old questions but asks
us to contemplate why they continually arise.

LANGUAGE AND MAGIC
Studies in the Magical Function of
Speech
Toshihiko Izutsu
The power of language has come to hold
the central position in our conception of
human mentality. Today, the man in the
street has realised with astonishment how
easy it is to be deceived and misled by
words. The magical power of the word has
caught the attention of those who explore the
nature of the human mind and the structure
of human knowledge. This work by the late
Japanese scholar, rst published in 1956,
tackles this complex and difcult subject.
He studies the worldwide belief in the
magical power of language, and examines
its inuence on mans thought and action.

TULIP IN THE DESERT
A Selection of the Poetry of
Muhammad Iqbal
Mustansir Mir
Iqbals poetry has such great variety that
several anthologies of it could be compiled,
each quite different from the others. The
poems in this volume, while being a personal
selection, are representative of Iqbals poetry.
The thematic arrangement reects the diversity
of subjects dealt by Iqbal. The volume aims
at introducing Iqbals poetry to the English-

THE CONCEPT AND REALITY
OF EXISTENCE
Toshihiko Izutsu
The actual presence of things, writes Izutsu,
is their existence. They are there. They do
exist, as we ourselves exist. On the other
hand, they are not there in the form of
pure existences. They exist as various
and variegated things: man, horse, stone,
tree, etc. This collection of four papers by
the late Japanese scholar remains the best
comparative study of the notion of existence
(wujud) in Eastern and European philosophy.
First written during 1968-1970, they centre
around the topic of reality and concept of
existence as it has been elaborated in the
post-Mongol period of Islamic philosophy.

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN ISLAM
Sayyid Qutb
Perhaps the best known work of Sayyid Qutb,
who was executed by the Egyptian regime
in 1966. Despite the years that have passed
since his death, the imprint of Qutbs thought
on contemporary Islamic movements remains
profound. This book retains its relevance
in many respects: the socio-economic
inequality in Muslim societies, the need for
viewing Islam as a totality, and the depiction

SAYYID QUTB
His early life was spent in the village. He moved to Cairo where he was educated,
and where he started his career as a teacher in the Ministry of Public Instruction.
During his early career, Qutb devoted himself to literature as an author and
critic. From 1948 to 1950, he went to the United States on a scholarship to study
the educational system, receiving a masters degree from the Colorado State
College of Education (now the University of Northern Colorado). It was during
this period that Qutb wrote his now-famous book, Social Justice in Islam.
He later became active in Egypts Ikhwanul Muslimin organisation. In 1954, he
was arrested by the Egyptian secret service and was tortured for hours. It was
during his long connements in prison that he completed his magnum opus,
In the Shade of the Quran, the tafsir of the Quran. On August 29, 1966, he
was sent to the gallows by Egypts Nasser regime after being found guilty of
a ludicrous charge of plotting a Marxist coup. The specic charge against him
was based on his now-celebrated book, Milestones (or Signposts).
Sayyid Qutb lives in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide, his books
translated into virtually every language that Muslims read. He raised his voice
indeed his penagainst un-Islamic ideologies, which he termed as jahiliyyah
(ignorance), gripping the Muslim world.

to the theory and the historical forces behind its
development, discussing the various critique and
responses to Huntingtons theory. She writes that
while it has become a convenient discourse on

tendencies. In the end, the elites of the two

SECULARISM REVISED
Arab Islam, Religious Freedom,
and Equidistance
Scott Morrison
The separation of religion and the state is called
secularism, yet even in the most avowedly secular
western democracies, the reality is more complex. The
author examines the rich spectrum of congurations
of religion and state in the former Christendom, and
juxtaposes secular ideals and practices governing
church and state with contemporary debates among
Arab Muslims concerning mosque and state. It
contends that no single model, including secularism,
is universally appropriate or consistent with religious
freedom. Instead, it moots equidistance the
principle of state impartiality towards religion.

ISLAMIC AWAKENING BETWEEN

In this thoughtful and important book, Shaykh
Yusuf al-Qaradawi examines the worldwide

the wisdom brought on by maturity, sound
scholarship, and a deep understanding of both the

THE PRINCIPLES OF STATE AND
GOVERNMENT IN ISLAM
Muhammad Asad
Although the Muslims are for the most part
imbued with enthusiasm for the idea of a truly
Islamic state that is, a state based not on the
concepts of nationality and race but solely on
the ideology of the Quran and Sunnah, they
had as yet no concrete vision of the methods of
government and of the institutions which would
give the state a distinctly Islamic character
and would, at the same time, fully correspond
to the exigencies of the present age. The very
fact that the Muslim countries have so far not
achieved a form of government that could be
termed genuinely Islamic, makes a discussion
of the principles which ought to underlie the
constitution of Islamic state imperative. This
book is an attempt to keep that discussion alive.

The Internet has profoundly shaped how both

transformed how many Muslims practise their duties
and rituals of Islam. It has dramatically inuenced
forms of Islamic activism and radicalisation.
Drawing on more than a decade of online research,

DEFINITIVE ENCOUNTERS
Islam, Muslims, and the West
Muzaffar Iqbal
The author explores various dimensions of Islam
and studies some of the more hidden aspects of the
encounter between Islam, Muslims and modern
Western civilization. These encounters are viewed
from the perspective of sacred history, vieweing
events as a continuum of Adamic story. Seen through
this prism, the contemporary global conicts gain
a degree of depth that is often lacking in secular
approaches. The prism through which contemporary
events are seen is constructed by tapping into the
primary sources of Islam the Quran and Sunnah
- as well as the early history of Muslims and the
traditional Islamic view of the cosmos and the
human condition. This book builds a compelling
case for seeing the contemporary situation as a
continuity of an old conict between those who
believe in the Creator and those who do not.

His homecoming from exile in 1979, and his

media images, who was Ayatullah Khomeini,
the leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and
architect of the rst Islamic State of the modern

parts, by academics, journalists, commentators
and seasoned observers of political Islam,
seeks to reassess Imam Khomeinis life and

Book 2: FROM HERE WE KNOW
Muhammad al-Ghazali
Translated by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi
Recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and other Arab countries have provoked a tsunami of analysis from political commentators
and scholars. A minority of commentators, with longer historical memories, have however sought to locate these events
in the context of the long history of popular reactions against the political, cultural, social and economic consequences of
western political hegemony in Muslim societies.
These two classic titles by socialist Khalid Muhammad Khalid and Islamic scholar Muhammad al-Ghazali, represent very
different ways of understanding the deep tensions that have long characterised Muslim societies. At the same time, they
have an eerie relevance to the problems still plaguing Muslims everywhere, more than sixty years after publication.

THE MALAYS
Their Problems and Future
Syed Husin Ali
The Malays as an ethnic group has been dened
on the basis of both legal-constitutional and
historical-cultural factors. While it is difcult
to speculate or visualise correctly the future of
any country or people, it is possible to provide
a general outline of the trends of the past and
present, and probably attempt to at least indicate
what should be avoided and promoted to ensure
a better future. This is what Dr Syed Husin
Ali attempts in this book. In nine chapters, he
discusses the Malays and their origin, history,
religion, economy, politics and development up
to the present day. He connects all of these to the
various changes in the forms of modernisation
and development programmes which affected,
and continue to impact upon, the Malays.

at large within the following two decades.
This book captures Malaysias rst 50 years

RECLAIMING THE CONVERSATION
Islamic Intellectual Tradition in
the Malay Archipelago
Edited by Rosnani Hashim
The area once known as the Malay archipelago, which
is now Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore,
southern Thailand, parts of Cambodia and parts of
Southern Philippines, once boasted of a glorious
intellectual tradition which was central to Islamic
discourses in the early twentieth century. While
most works on the history of Islam in this region
tend to focus on differences and debates between
traditionalists and modernists, few have addressed the
topic of educational reform in the Malay world, which
underlined the role of the ulama in facing the challenges
of colonialisation and the social changes it heralded.
This book brings together writings by academics from
around the region highlighting the efforts of eleven
Malay-Muslim educational reformers, and examines
the debates that took place on this crucial topic.

EDUCATIONAL DUALISM IN MALAYSIA
Implications for Theory and Practice
Rosnani Hashim
In Muslim countries, two educational systems
are the traditional, religious system and the
pragmatic, secular system. This leads to
conict between the two systems and to bring
together the two with one supplementary to
the other generates confusion. Faced with this
dilemma, post-independent Muslim countries
have attempted to reformulate their educational
policy and curriculum so as to be contemporary
and integrated while remaining faith-based.
This book investigates the differences between
the two systems within the Malaysian context
and highlights attempts made in reformulating
the educational policy and curriculum.

WHAT IS SUFISM?
Martin Lings
The title of this book has been given some
dubious and suspect answers in recent years
as far as the Western world is concerned.
The rapidly expanding interest in Susm
brings the need for a reliable introductory
book: introductory in the sense it requires
no special knowledge on the part of the
reader, and reliable in that it is not written
any more simply than the truth will allow.

THE ALCHEMY OF HAPPINESS
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Claude Field
Man was not created in jest; He is not immortal,
yet he lives for ever. His body is mean and earthly,
yet his spirit is divine. When he is purged from
carnal passions, he attains to the highest, and in
place of being a slave to lust and anger, becomes
endued with angelic qualities. The spiritual alchemy
which operates this change in man, like that which
transmutes base metals into gold, is not easily
discovered. This alchemy may be turning away
from the world to God, and its constituents are four
types of knowledge: the knowledge of God, Self,
This World and the Next World. Rebuking those
whose piety was only lukewarm or who uttered
empty phrases, Imam al-Ghazali explains in these
pages how to achieve contentment of the heart, the
window into the spiritual world. Originally written in
Persian as his own abridgement of his 12th century
magnum opus, Ihya Ulum al-Din, this little book is its
English version, revised based on an old translation.
AL-MUNABBIHAT (THE COUNSEL)
Translated by Habib Siddiqui
Originally written in Arabic this little work
has remained unknown to the English
readers. A collection of sayings and
admonitions by Prophet Muhammad, other
prophets of Islam, companions and great
scholars of Islam, this book serves as an
added reminder to the reader of his/her
responsibilities as a Muslim. Each chapter is
arranged in such a way that the number of
the chapter determines how many sentences
are given in the paragraphs. Its rightful
author remains unknown, or disputed, but
its usefulness as a practical guidance in
day-to-day life has stood the test of time.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE HEREAFTER
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Jane Idleman Smith
All major religions have dealt with questions of life
after death, although many do not treat it in detail
as have Muslim theologians and traditionists. The
present text attributed to Imam al-Ghazl was based
on a French translation of his Durrah al-Fkhirah
(The Precious Pearl), a treatise believed to be written
after the completion of his magnum opus Ihya Ulum
al-Din. In explaining the Hereafter, al-Ghazl
gives a much less theoretical description than in his
other works, and makes much use of stories and
traditions. Many of these traditions are common in
Islamic sources, particularly those giving details of
the period immediately after death and the events
of the eschaton. Throughout this book, al-Ghazl
stresses on the freeing of the soul from the body,
the comparison of death with the sleep of this world,
and the eternal abiding in the presence of God.

MARRIAGE AND SEXUALITY IN ISLAM
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Madelain Farah
This is a translation of the twelfth book
in Imam al-Ghazalis magnum opus Ihya
Ulum al-Din, on the Etiquette of Marriage.
In his inimitable style, he delineates the
delicate subject of the Islamic perceptions on
sexuality and marriage which is still valid in
contemporary Muslim discourse. He addresses
in depth issues which modern authors have
generally attempted with little success to
explain owing to their cultural limitations,
their lack of knowledge in the issue, or both.

THE SECRETS OF PILGRIMAGE
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Ibrahim Umar
Hajj is one of the pillars and foundations of Islam,
the act of worship of a lifetime, the seal of all that
is commanded, the perfection of Islam and the
completion of religion. Such a worship deserves
that much attention be devoted to explaining it and
to detailing its essential elements, its proprieties,
its merits, and its mysteries. This little book is
translated from Kitab Asrar al-Hajj, the seventh
chapter of the celebrated 12th-century work, Ihya
Ulum al-Din. In his inimitable style of explaining
the rituals of Islam to the common man, Al-Ghazali
invites readers to dwell on the subject of the hajj
beyond its mechanics and rituals, and to pay attention
to its true substance, purpose and philosopy.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
HISTORY OF SUFISM
Arthur J. Arberry
This work is made up of lectures in memory
of the Indian Muslim scholar Abdullah
Suhrawardy (d. 1935), delivered by the author
at the University of Calcutta in 1942. In three
lectures, Arberry provides an introduction to
the history of mysticism in Islam. He begins
by reviewing the work of past scholars and
researches conducted by his contemporaries.
He traces the early interest of Susm in Europe
as well as the Orientalist approach to the
subject, and suggests a skeletal outline of any
future work in studying the history of Susm.

THE BOOK OF TRUTHFULNESS
Abu Said al-Kharraz
Translated by Arthur John Arberry
The importance of this treatise lies in the fact that it
is the earliest systematic presentation of the theory
of Su experience, written by a practicing Su.
Beginning with the idea of Sidq or truthfulness, the
author develops his theme to include stations of
fear, hope, trust, love, shame, longing, intimacy, all
of which the mystic must pass on his path to God.
Throughout the discourse the author constantly
refers, typically as a mystic, to higher degrees of
the various stations which cannot be described in
written language. In a style which foreshadows
the practice of later writers, the author begins
with Quranic sanctions, and follows these by
references to the Sunnah and the lives of the saints.

THE NICHE FOR LIGHTS:
MISHKAH AL-ANWAR
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by W.H.T. Gairdner
This treatise gives us a intimate glimpse
of the inner life and esoteric thought of
Imam al-Ghazali. It begins where his
autobiographical Al-Munqidh min al-
Dalal leaves off. It basically expounds
the celebrated Light verse (24:35) from
the Quran and the subject of Veils from
the hadith. These are further elaborated
in three sections; one studying the
various meanings of Light, the other
on symbolic language in the Quran and
Hadith and, the nal section concludes
by applying the results of this symbology
to the verse and hadith in question.

THE QURAN,
ORIENTALISM AND
THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF
THE QURAN
Muzaffar Iqbal
This essay brings into sharp relief
established attitudes of Western academia
toward the Quran, especially as evidenced
in the only extant multi-volume reference
work on the Quran in EnglishBrills
Encyclopaedia of the Quran. The author
exposes layers of centuries-old polemical
literature against the Qurn entrenched
in putatively rigorous and academic
scholarship, and underscores the need for
Muslims to produce an alternate reference
work on the Qurn.
WHY AN ISLAMIC STATE
THE LIFE PROJECTS OF
TWO GREAT EUROPEAN MUSLIMS
M.A Sherif
Muhammad Asad (1900-1992), the Jewish
convert to Islam who rose to fame with his
autobiographical work, The Road to Mecca,
and Alija Izetbegovic (1925-2003), the Bosnian
leader during the Balkan wars of the 1990s,
were men imbued in Islams spiritualising and
moralising force that translated into political
activism. Their intellectual journeys will
inspire a younger generation of concerned
Muslims, who look to religion not just as a
private affair or cultural phenomenon, but as
a paradigm with its own norms and notions,
including the project of an Islamic state.
BRAVE HEARTS:
PICKTHALL AND PHILBY
Two English Muslims in a
Changing World
M.A. Sherif
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall and
Abdullah Philby were Englishmen of
courage and adventure who travelled
widely in the Muslim world and came
to love and admire what they found.
By accompanying them on their
life journeys, it is possible to view
some of the great dramas of the time
through their eyes. This biographical
essay interleaves two lives spanning a
period from the 1890s to the 1940s.

THE ESSENTIAL IHYA
4 VOLUMES
New revised edition
Translated by Fazalul Karim
This four-volume set captures the essence of Imam al-
Ghazalis magnum opus, Ihya Ulum al-Din (The Revival of
the Religious Sciences). When completed, this new edition
will be the rst time the work is thoroughly revised and re-
typeset in a format betting modern publication standards.
The Ihya is divided into four parts, each part containing ten
chapters (or books as they are named in the original work).
TADABBUR-E-QURAN
(PONDERING OVER THE QURAN)
VOLUME TWO: SURAH ALI IMRAN
Amin Ahsan Islahi
Translated by Mohammad Saleem Kayani
This English translation of the tafsir of Surah Ali Imran is
part of the eight-volume Urdu tafsir, Tadabbur-e-Quran
(Pondering over the Quran). This tafsir is based on the
principle of coherence, and is perhaps the rst sustained and
successful attempt to demonstrate such coherence and to refute
the oft-repeated allegation of the lack of order or integrity in the
Quran. Without recognising and appreciating the coherence of
the Quran, one may gain knowledge of certain commandments
and teachings but will remain ignorant of the Quranic wisdom
(hikmah) contained in its beautifully integrated and holistic
message. The Urdu original was rst published in 1967, the
result of the life-long work of Amin Ahsan Islahi (1904-1997),
a pre-eminent scholar of the Quran.
FEAR AND HOPE
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated and annotated by William McKane
This is a translation of the third book from the fourth volume
of Imam al-Ghazalis magnum opus Ihya Ulum al-Din,
concerning the means of salvation, that is, the techniques
or therapies by which the cure of the soul is achieved. This
book might well be described as an essay in the tactics of
propagating the Faith to the community at large. The principle
objective is to outline the salutary employment of fear and
hope in the cure of the soul. The book deals with a topic of
pastoral psychology and is a good sample of the work of Imam
al-Ghazali in so far as it illustrates some of the reasons why
he has attained so commanding a position within Islam and
exercised so great an inuence on the course of theological
thought.
99 NAMES OF GOD IN ISLAM
Imam al-Ghazali
Translated by Robert Charles Stade
This is a translation of the major portion of Imam al-
Ghazalis al-Maqsad al-Asna, which is devoted to giving an
understanding and application of the meanings of the names
of God in Islam. The reader will notice that the denition
of the individual name almost invariably is followed by an
admonition addressed to the reader. By these admonitions
Imam al-Ghazali endeavoured to show how the individual
Muslim can emulate the given name of God and thereby draw
closer to Him and win His favour.
