INRODUCTION

Air pollutions takes place when harmful
substance are present in the air . Air
pollutions are harmful substance or
chemical present in the air . Pollutants are
produced s aresult of human activities .
Dust, carbon dioxide and pesticides are
examples of air pollutants . When released
into the into the inviroment , pollutants
dirty the enviroment . Pollutants are
harmful to living things .

SOURCES OF AIR
POLLUTIONS

Example of air pollutions
- Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
- Carbon monoxide
- Carbon dioxide
- Dust
- Smoke and soot
- Chlorofluorocarbon
- Lead
- Tar dan nicotine

Sources of air pollutions
- Burning of fossil fuels
- Cigarette smoke
- Incomplete combustion of fuels
- Forest fire
- Construction sites
- Cement sites
- Burning of rubbish and fuels
- Aerosal sparys
- Refrigerator and air conditioners
- Burning of leaded petrol

Air pollutions is a serious problem in towns and
and cities . Gases and smoke from vehicles and
factories contains carbon particles and soot . The
burning of fuels such as petrol and diesel release
carbon dioxide and water vapour . If the
combustion of fuels formed is not complete ,
carbon and a poisonous gas , carbon monoxide ,
are formed. Sulphur dioxide and oxides of
nitrogen are also formed. All these are pollutants
In the past , compounds of lead were added to
petrol . These improved its combustion.
However, the released gases contained lead
particles . Lead particles are harmful to humans .
Haze is caused by the open burning of forest . It is
also caused by the released of excessive
pollutants from vehicles .

Effect of air pollution
on human beings
and the enviroment

Clean air is very important for our health.
Polluted air can cause lung dieseases and
other problems .

can cause lung cancer
asbestos particles
can cause liver failure and cancer
gases from vehicles
can daamage children's brain
lead particles

Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
can dissolve in rain water to form acid
rain . Acid rain can damage plants . It
can make object made from iron rust
faster.

can cause headaches , brain damage or
even death
carbon monoxide
can cause bronchitis , pneumonia and
lung cancer
sulphur dioxide

Effect on the enviroment

Pollutions from combustion causes :
a) Greenhouse effect

- carbon dioxide is given out when fuels
are burned . It then remains in the
atmosphere
- carbon dioxide acts like a blanket which
retains heat . This cause the earth to
warm up slowly , leading to the
greenhouse effect.
- the greenhouse effect may cause
* polar ice caps to melt which will raise
the sea level
* climate change , like changes in wind
direction and frequent storms

b) Acid rain

- most fossil fuels contain sulphur
impurities
- when the fuel is burned ,the sulphur
impurities turn into sulphur dioxide
- oxides of nitrogen are released when
fossil fuels are burned
- sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
mix with clouds to form acids , which
will fall as acids rain
- cars and power stations are the main
causes of acid rain

Effect of acid rain on the enviroment

a) acid rain causes lakes to became acidic ,
which has a severe effect on their
ecosystem

b) acid rain kills fish and trees

c) acid rain damages limestone buildings
and ruins stone statues

thinning of ozone layer

a) the ozone layer protects the earth from
excessive ultraviolet rays from the sun

b) 95% - 99% of ultraviolet rays can be
blocked by the ozone layer , preventing it
from reaching the sun

c) ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer
(melanoma) , eye cataracts and weaken
the body s immune system

d) chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) can cause the
ozone layer to corrode

The importance of
keeping the air clean

When the air is clean :

a) the quality of air increase and health
problems associated with air pollutants
will decrease
b) the yeild of crops will be better
c) global warming can be controlled
d) the world becames a better place to
live in .

ways and habits to keep the air
clean

it is our duty to keep the air clean . There
are many ways to keep it clean .

we should practise good habits that help
to keep the air clean

- recycle papers , bottles and cans to
reduce waste
- use unleaded petrol to reduce lead
particles in the air
- practicles car pooling or use public
transports to reduce the number of
cars on the road
- use less clorofluorocarbon (CFC)
- save electricity so that less fossil fuels
have to be burnt to provide electricity .
Pollutants in
cigarette smoke

Do you know that cigarette smoke has
pollutants ? when a cigarette is lighted ,
it gives off smoke. This smoke contains
more than 4000 chemicals . A lot of of
these chemical can cause cancer. Tar ,
nicotine and carbon monoxide re
example of pollutants contained in the
cigarette smoke .
