Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables

Competency: Solve system of linear equations in two variables
Objective: Solve system of linear equations using a calculator

Introduction
A system of linear equations, often called a linear system, consists of two or more linear
equations with the same variables. Examples of system of two linear equations include
2x + 3y = 4 x + 3y = 1 x y = 1
3x y = -5 -y = 4 2x y = 3

Example:
Find the value of x and y in the following system of linear equations
x + 4y = -8
3x + 2y = 6
Solution:
The following calculator commands can be used to easily find the values:
Press Mode
Select 5: EQN
Select 1: anX + bnY = cn for 2 variables
Enter the coefficients of the equations in the table in the corresponding column
and row

For the example, type 1, 4 and -8 in the first row
3, 2 and 6 in the second row

Press the equal sign (=) successively to get the value of x and y.
The value of x = 4 and y = -3 will be shown on the screen.
Guide Questions:
1) What are the different ways of solving systems of linear equations in two variables?

2) Why is it that we need at least two equations to solve a system of linear equations in two
variables?

3) What must be the equation of the line of the two equations before encoding the numerical
coefficients in the calculator?

Exercises:
Solve the following system of linear equations in two variables.

1) 5x + 2y = -15 2) 3x 5 = y 3) 2x = -12 + y
2x y = -6 x + 3y = 0 2y = 4x + 24

Standard Form: Standard Form: Standard Form:

______________ _______________ ______________
______________ _______________ ______________

x = _____ x = _____ x = _____
y = _____ y = _____ y = _____

4) 2x + 10y = 3 5) 6x + 1 = y
x = 1 5y 5y = 17 + 6x

Standard Form: Standard Form:

______________ _______________
______________ _______________

x = _____ x = _____
y = _____ y = _____
ANSWER KEY

1) 5x + 2y = -15 2) 3x 5 = y 3) 2x = -7 5y
2x y = -6 x + 3y = 0 4y = -3x + 2

Standard Form: Standard Form: Standard Form:

5x + 2y = -15 3x y = 5 2x + 5y = -7
2x y = - 6 x + 3y = 0 3x + 4y = 2

x = - 3 x =

x =

y = 0 y = -

y =

4) 2x + 10y = 3 5) 6x + 1 = y
3x = 1 5y 5y = 17 + 6x

Standard Form: Standard Form:

2x + 10y = 3 6x y = - 1
3x + 5y = 1 6x 5y = -17

x = -

x =

y =

y = 4
