Raising up warriors in the battle for Americas youth

A Word from the Director
In this fall season I am often reminded of all the ways I have been blessed; simple things that
often get overlooked or taken for granted, things like my family, my health, my home. Lately, I have been
increasingly thankful that God has blessed me with some faithful friends who continually speak truth
into my life. Sometimes it is painful, harsh, ugly truth, but it is truth nonetheless. I am thankful for those
dear brothers and sisters in Christ.
Never has this been more evident than at a recent lunch meeting with one of those friends. He
remembered that the last time we spoke I shared that the busyness of my schedule had crowded out
my time with the Lord and choked out my passion for Him. As I reluctantly confessed that my progress
had been extremely limited, he asked if I had been able to recognize Christs presence in the midst of
every situation I encountered throughout the day. He challenged me not to try adding Christ into my
already busy schedule, but to realize that He is already there and recognize His presence and purpose in
each and every moment of the day. The concept is not time consuming, hard, or complicated. It is
simply acknowledging the presence of Christ repeatedly throughout the day.
Looking for His presence has made a huge difference in my life. It has helped me to re-
evaluate how I spend my time and has lowered my stress level. I am more focused on what God would
have me to do and less on earthly expectations. I am experiencing a rekindled passion for the God who
truly will never leave me, nor forsake me.
". . . For He Himself has said, 'I will never desert you,
Nor will I ever forsake you.'" Hebrews 13:5
I used to consider this verse useful when counseling someone going through a difficult time, but
until now I had never realized the value it holds for each of us every day. As followers of Christ it is
absolutely imperative that we recognize His presence every step of every day. If we do not, how can we
truly be following Him?
God Bless, Wayne
I've found Joseph Stowell's book, Simply Jesus and You, a valuable resource.

BTC . . . Coming Fall
2015
SLY is working toward becoming a Bible
Training Center campus to train those who are
unable to leave their responsibilities or pay the high
cost of Bible college or seminary. The curriculum is
provided by Rocky Mountain Bible Mission and is
ACSI certified. It was designed to meet the need for
a solid theological and practical education for those
serving in the rural church.
The program offers nine courses over a 3
year period with classes held locally one weekend
each month. The costs and tuition are low and allow
individuals easy access to quality Bible education.
A certificate is presented to those who complete all
nine courses. Instructors are pastors or church
leaders who have a passion for sharing Gods word
and its application in a believers life. The courses
can be taken in any sequence. It is anticipated that
BTC classes will begin in September 2015.

The topics offered will be :
Bible study methods,
O.T. survey,
N.T. survey,
Bible teaching methods,
Bible doctrine,
Church history,
Leadership,
Peacemakers/Counseling,
Discipleship/Evangelism/Mission.

In the Meantime . . .
Until the Fall 2015 start-up, SLY will be
offering a series of one day seminars giving
an overview of BTC courses. The first will be:
Biblical Leadership Seminar
taught by Jim Hunter, Director of BTC.
November 1 at The Well in Plummer
9 am to 4 pm, with registration at 8:30 am.
The cost will be $25.

Volunteer Spotlight
Hi-yaaa, we are Eric and Tracy Berard. Eric is a forester and Tracy is awesome. We were both
saved 10 years ago in Fernwood Community Bible Church, when we came through despair to realize our
sinful state. Jesus redeemed us and we have been working for Him ever since. We have five children; four
still live at home since they are 10 and under, the fifth is no longer at home, but out in the world. There is
not a whole lot more to say about ourselves, beyond the fact we are committed to Jesus in all our
inadequacies and failings. Yet He still loves us more than we could ever know.
We are privileged to currently be walking alongside some of our younger brothers and sisters in a
group that we call D-Tox. (Detoxing from the world; a name just cool enough to impress adults and
cheesy enough to be Christian). D-Tox is a fledgling group for Fernwood. We hope that the Lord will
create in these young people a desire to be the church- to love each other and all people. We pray that
they will embrace Jesus in a way that pleases Him and works towards His ends.

Peace out,
Eric

Ministry Opportunity
SLY has recently gone from being Wayne and
Shannon on staff with a team of volunteers to the point
it is today with an organizational chart, seven staff
members, multiple interns AND our ever-faithful
team of volunteers. This re-construction has been
challenging. We sometimes feel like an awkward
middle-school boy who can't keep up with the way his
body is growing.
With the progress we are making toward
working together as a team, we know the changes are
both good and necessary. I am extremely grateful to
those who have come on staff, as well as all those who
selflessly serve as volunteers week after week, year
after year on behalf of the Gospel and the teens in their
church and community.
However, we still have one position left to fill,
that of Chief Ministry Officer. This person will train
directly under Wayne and Shannon and will be
responsible for the care and oversight of all our
existing youth ministries and putting together
corporate events that will help our various youth
groups grow as a body. The ideal applicant for this
position will have a passion for youth and the Gospel;
be able to work well with adults; have lots of energy;
and be able to work evenings.

application please contact:

Absolute Curriculum
This fall Will Dole and Wayne Eve are
beginning to develop the Absolute Curriculum. The
goal is to introduce teens to the Absolutes of the
Christian Faith; the things they need to know and
understand to be prepared to face the challenges of our
secular culture. Segments include:
Who is God?
Who is man?
Salvation
The Christian Life
The Big Ten (the Ten commandments)
For the Fame of His Name
Each segment will build on the same concept
for 4-5 sessions. Each session contains a 10-20 minute
video of Will talking through a particular text of
Scripture or a topic that arises as we study the Bible.
The discussion questions, developed by Wayne to be
used by youth leaders, will engage students in
conversation and deepen their knowledge of God and
His word.
The first segment teaches the nature and
attributes of God. Will says, "Knowing who God is,
and responding appropriately, is the most important
thing in our lives. Proverbs 1:7 says,
'
The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of knowledge.' You might even
question if there is a God. I'll be honest with you, we
aren't even going to grapple with that question, and
here's why: The fool says in his heart, 'There is no
God.' The question is not, 'Is there a God?' He has
made that clear. The question is, 'Who is He?'"

News from our Student Development Sites
Plummer Red Zone meets on Monday evenings for dinner, a Bible study and
game time. Please pray that this group of young students will consistently
grow in their spiritual walk.

Fernwood Eric and Tracy Berard are intentionally seeking opportunities to
develop mentoring relationships with students in their church and community.
Please pray for these volunteers to have opportunities for quality time with
young people.

Potlatch has a group that meets on Thursday nights to share snacks, Bible study,
and activities. PTL! God provided the larger space they needed.

Harrison Teens hosts amazing dinners, games, and worship. They meet on
Monday nights at 6pm. Please pray for these young people to put their faith in
action and find creative ways to reach out.
