Introduction
Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace be upon our Prophet
Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
We previously published a brief wor entitled !Muharamaat" Prohibitions that
are taen too li#htly$, which discussed some of the various offences a#ainst
%haree&ah which may involve shir and ma'or and minor sins. (vidence for
these thin#s bein# prohibited was )uoted from the *ur&aan and %unnah, and
real+life situations were described in order to e,plain clearly the different ways
in which people may fall into committin# sin.
-here are many thin#s that have been prohibited in the *ur&aan and %unnah,
and it is very important for the Muslim to now about them so that he can eep
away from them and thus avoid earnin# the wrath and an#er of Allaah or
brin#in# about his own doom in this world and the ne,t. %o . thou#ht of
compilin# this list of prohibited thin#s, in accordance with the hadeeth of the
Prophet /peace and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0" !1eli#ion is sincere advice
/al+deen al+naseehah0,$ and in the hope that it will be of benefit both to
myself and to my Muslim brothers. %o . have compiled what information . could
from the *ur&aan and from the ahaadeeth classed as saheeh by the scholars
who speciali2e in this field /relyin# mostly on the reports classed as saheeh by
al+3Allaamah Muhammad 4aasir al+5een al+Albaani in his boos0. -opics are
#rouped accordin# to the classifications used in fi)h /.slamic 'urisprudence0. .
have not )uoted every hadeeth in full, only the relevant parts. .n most cases
the reports include words which clearly indicate prohibition /such as !5o
not6$0, and . have e,plained the reason for the prohibition in some cases. . as
Allaah to help us to avoid sin and wron#doin# wherever it e,ists, visible or
hidden, and to accept our repentance.

List of rohibitions mentioned in the !ur"aan and Sunnah
Allaah and 8is Messen#er have prohibited many thin#s, avoidin# which brin#s
#reat benefits and protects us from many inds of evil and harm. -hese
prohibitions include both thin#s which are haraam /forbidden0 and thin#s which
are marooh /dislied, discoura#ed0. -he Muslim should avoid these thin#s,
because the Prophet /peace and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0 told us"
!What . have forbidden you to do, avoid.$ -he committed Muslim is een to
avoid all thin#s that have been prohibited, whether they are classed as haraam
or marooh. 8e does not act lie the wea of faith, who do not care if they do
thin#s that are marooh, even thou#h tain# such matters li#htly leads to
committin# haraam deeds, as the marooh deeds effectively form a barrier
around haraam actions. Moreover, the person who avoids marooh deeds will be
rewarded for this, if he avoids them for the sae of Allaah. 9n this basis, we
mae no distinction here between marooh and haraam, because main# this
distinction re)uires a #reat deal of nowled#e, but most of what follows
describes actions that are haraam rather than marooh. -here now follows a
list of thin#s that are prohibited in .slam.
#A$eedah %basic tenets of faith&
%hir in #eneral, whether ma'or, minor or hidden.
.t is forbidden to #o to fortune+tellers and soothsayers, to believe in what they
say, to offer a sacrifice to anythin# other than Allaah, and to spea about
Allaah and 8is Messen#er without nowled#e.

.t is forbidden to wear or han# up amulets, includin# the ind of pearls which
are used to ward off the evil eye; to perform the ind of sihr /witchcraft0 used
to cause a split between two people or to brin# two people to#ether; to
perform any ind of sihr /witchcraft, ma#ic0 in #eneral; to en#a#e in fortune+
tellin# and soothsayin#; to believe that the stars and planets have any effect
on events and people&s lives /astrolo#y0; and to believe that thin#s may brin#
benefits when Allaah has not created them so.
.t is forbidden to thin about the nature of Allaah < one should instead thin
about 8is creation. 4o Muslim should die thinin# in any way of Allaah e,cept
positively.
.t is forbidden to state that any believer is #oin# to #o to 8ell; to call any
Muslim a aafir e,cept with sound proof; to as anyone to do somethin# for you
or to #ive you somethin# for the sae of Allaah; or to refuse to #ive somethin#
when you are ased for it for the sae of Allaah < you should #ive it so lon# as it
does not involve sin, because this is respectin# the ri#hts of Allaah.
.t is forbidden to curse time, because Allaah is the 9ne Who is controllin# it; to
be superstitious, because this is a form of pessimism.
.t is forbidden to travel to the lands of the mushrieen; to live with the
uffaar; to tae the aafirs <=ews, Christians and other enemies of Allaah < as
close friends instead of the believers; or to tae aafirs as close friends whom
one consults and is friendly with.
.t is forbidden to cancel out #ood deeds by intendin# to show off, #ain a #ood
reputation or remind others of one>s favours in a hurtful fashion.
.t is forbidden to travel to any place for the purpose of worshippin# there,
e,cept for three places < al+Mas'id al+8araam /in Maah0, the Mos)ue of the
?
Prophet /peace and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0 /in Madeenah0 and al+
Mas'id al+A)sa /in =erusalem0. .t is forbidden to erect structures over #raves
and tae them as places of worship.
.t is forbidden to curse the %ahaabah; to indul#e in ar#uments about any
disputes that arose amon# the %ahaabah; to indul#e in ar#uments about )adr
/divine predestination0; to ar#ue about the *ur&aan with no nowled#e; to sit
with those who en#a#e in false ar#uments about the *ur&aan; to visit a sic
person who is a follower of al+*adariyyah and other similar #roups who en#a#e
in bid&ah; and to attend the funeral of any such person.
.t is forbidden to insult the #ods of the uffaar, because this may lead to them
insultin# Allaah, may 8e be #lorified; to follow deviations and become divided
in reli#ion; to treat the %i#ns of Allaah as a 'est; to allow what Allaah has
forbidden and forbid what Allaah has allowed; to bow down or prostrate to
anythin# other than Allaah; to sit with hypocrites and sinful people in order to
en'oy their company or to eep them company; to eep away from the
'amaa&ah, which is those who are a#reed upon the -ruth.
.t is forbidden to imitate the =ews, Christians and @oroastrians by lettin# the
moustache #row and trimmin# the beard < we should trim our moustaches and
let our beards #row; to initiate the #reetin# of salaam to a aafir; and to
believe or disbelieve what the People of the Aoo say about their %criptures <
because we do not now what is true and what is false in them; to consult any
of the People of the Aoo with re#ard to reli#ious matters /with the intention
of #ainin# nowled#e or benefittin# from them0.
.t is forbidden to swear by one&s children, or by false #ods or rivals to Allaah; to
swear by one&s forefathers or by one&s honour; to say !whatever Allaah and you
want$; for a slave to say !my lord, my lady$ /rabbi, rabbati0 < he should say,
!my master, my mistress$ /mawlaaya, seedi, sayyidati0; for a master to say

!my male slave, my female slave$ /3abdi, amati0 < he should say !my youn#
man, my youn# woman /fataaya, fataati, #hulaami0; to say !haybat al+dahr$
/what an awful timeC0; to curse one another by wishin# the curse and wrath of
Allaah upon one another, or wishin# 8ell for one another.
Tahaarah %cleanliness and urity&
.t is forbidden to urinate into sta#nant water; to answer the call of nature at
the side of the road or in places where people see shade or places from which
they draw water; to face the *iblah or sit with one&s bac towards it when
urinatin# or defecatin# /althou#h some scholars mae an e,ception in the case
of toilet facilities inside a buildin#0; to clean oneself with one&s ri#ht hand
after urinatin# or defecatin#; to wipe oneself with one&s ri#ht hand; to use
bones or dun# to clean oneself, because these are the food of our brothers
amon# the 'inn; to clean oneself with dun# because it is the food of their
animals.
.t is forbidden for a man to hold his penis in his ri#ht hand when passin# water;
to #ive the #reetin# of salaam to one who is answerin# the call of nature.
When one has 'ust woen up, it is forbidden to put one&s ri#ht hand into any
vessel before washin# it.
Salaah %rayer&
.t is forbidden to perform naafil /superero#atory or !e,tra$0 prayers when the
sun is risin#, when it is at its 2enith, or when it is settin#, because it rises and
sets between the horns of the %haytaan, and when the sun+worshippin# uffaar
see it they prostrate to it. .t is forbidden to pray after subh /fa'r0 until after
the sun has risen. .t is forbidden to pray after 3asr until after the sun has set.

-hese prohibitions apply to naafil prayers done for no specific reason; if they
are done for a specific reason, such as tahiyyat al+mas'id /!#reetin# the
mos)ue$0, there is nothin# wron# with prayin# them at these times.
.t is forbidden to mae houses lie #raveyards by not prayin# naafil prayers in
them; to follow a fard /obli#atory0 prayer with a naafil prayer without speain#
in between /by main# dhir or otherwise0 or by #oin# out then comin# bac; or
to pray anythin# but the two sunnah ra&ahs of fa'r after the adhaan for fa'r
prayer.
.t is forbidden to anticipate the imaam in any movement of the prayer; to pray
standin# alone behind a row; to loo around durin# prayer; to raise one&s eyes
to heaven whilst prayin#; or to recite *ur&aan durin# ruoo& and su'ood <
althou#h there is nothin# wron# with recitin# a *ur&aanic du&aa& in su'ood.
.t is forbidden for a man to pray wearin# only one #arment, leavin# both
shoulders bare; to pray when there is food ready that one wishes to eat; to
pray when one needs to pass water, stools or wind < because this is a
distraction that eeps one from concentratin# properly.
.t is forbidden to pray in #raveyards and bathrooms; to pray lie a chicen
pecin#, bobbin# up and down; to loo around lie a fo,; to spread one&s arms
lie a beast of prey; to rest one&s forearms on the #round lie a do#; to settle
lie a camel < which means always prayin# in the same spot in the mos)ue; to
pray in the restin#+place of camels, because this was created from the
shayaateen.
.t is forbidden to wipe the #round durin# prayer, but if it is necessary to do so,
to smooth the #ravel or whatever, then one sweep of the hand is enou#h.

.t is forbidden to cover the mouth durin# prayer; to raise one&s voice in prayer
in such a way as to disturb other believers; to continue prayin# )iyaam al+layl if
one becomes drowsy < in this case, one should sleep, then #et up a#ain; to pray
)iyaam al+layl for the whole ni#ht, especially if this is done continuously.
.t is forbidden to yawn and blow durin# prayer; to step over the necs of
people /in the mos)ue0; to tuc up one&s clothes and hair when prayin#.
.t is forbidden to repeat a prayer that has been performed properly < which is
of benefit to those who suffer from waswaas /insinuatin# thou#hts from
%haytaan that mae them doubt the validity of their prayer0. .t is also
forbidden to stop prayin# if one is uncertain as to whether one has broen
wudoo& by passin# wind < you should wait until you hear a sound or detect an
odour.
.t is forbidden to sit in circles in the mos)ue before prayin# %alaat al+=umu&ah;
to smooth the #ravel; to fid#et and spea durin# the hutbah; or to sit with
one&s nees drawn up to one&s stomach and with one&s #arment drawn over
them or one&s hands clasped around them durin# the hutbah.
.t is forbidden to offer any prayer once the i)aamah for a fard prayer has been
#iven; for the imaam to stand in a place that is hi#her than the con#re#ation,
unless it is for a valid reason; to wal in front of a person who is prayin#; for a
person who is prayin# to allow anyone to wal in front of him or between him
and his sutrah /ob'ect placed in front of him whilst prayin# as a ind of
!screen$ < people may, however, wal in front of the sutrah < -ranslator0.
.t is forbidden to spit towards the )iblah or to one>s ri#ht durin# prayer < but
one may spit to one&s left or beneath one&s left foot.

.t is forbidden for a person who wants to pray to put his shoes to his ri#ht or his
left, lest he disturb the people beside him; he should put them between his
feet.
.t is forbidden to sleep before 3ishaa& if one cannot be sure that one will not
miss it; to spea after 3ishaa& e,cept for a le#itimate reason; to lead a man in
prayer in his own place of authority, e,cept with his permission; for a visitor to
lead the head of the house in prayer, unless he ass him to; to lead a #roup of
people in prayer when they have ob'ections for a le#itimate reason.
The mos$ue
.t is forbidden to buy, sell or mae lost+and+found announcements in the
mos)ue; to use the mos)ue as a thorou#hfare or for any purpose other than
dhir /remembrance of Allaah0 and salaah; to carry out shar&i punishments in
the mos)ue; to clasp one&s hands when one has #one out headin# for the
mos)ue, because once a person has decided to #o and pray, he is considered to
be in a state of prayer.
.t is forbidden for anyone to leave the mos)ue without prayin# once the adhaan
has been #iven.
.t is forbidden to sit down in the mos)ue before prayin# two ra&ahs; to hasten
unduly when the i)aamah is #iven < one should wal in a calm and di#nified
manner; to form a row between two pillars of the mos)ue unless it is essential
to do so.
.t is forbidden for anyone who has eaten #arlic, onions or anythin# that has an
offensive smell to approach the mos)ue.

.t is forbidden for a man to wal throu#h the mos)ue with anythin# that may
harm the Muslims; to prevent women from #oin# to the mos)ue as lon# as all
conditions of %haree&ah are complied with; for a woman to wear perfume when
she is #oin# to the mos)ue.
.t is forbidden to have intercourse with women durin# i&tiaaf /retreat in the
mos)ue0; to show off and compete in the buildin# of mos)ues; to decorate
them with red or yellow paint, en#ravin#s or anythin# that may distract the
worshippers.
'unerals
.t is forbidden to build anythin# over #raves or to raise them and mae them
hi#h; to sit on #raves; to wal between #raves wearin# shoes; to illuminate
them or to write on them; to e,cavate them.
.t is forbidden to tae #raves as places of worship or to pray facin# any #rave
e,cept when prayin# the funeral prayer at the #raveside.
.t is forbidden for a woman to mourn for a deceased person for more than
three days, e,cept for her husband, for whom the period of mournin# is four
months and ten days.
.t is forbidden for a recently+widowed women to wear perfume, ohl, henna,
adornments such as 'ewellery and fancy, decorated clothes.
.t is forbidden to wail for the dead, to help another woman in wailin#, because
this is cryin# for the sae of somethin# other than Allaah, and 'oinin# to#ether
in weepin# is classified as wailin#.

.t is forbidden to hire a woman to wail; to tear one&s clothes or to leave one&s
hair uncombed as a si#n of #rief.
.t is forbidden to announce a death in the manner of 'aahiliyyah, althou#h
there is nothin# wron# with simply informin# people that the deceased has
died.
'asting
.t is forbidden to fast on the day /(id0 of Fitr and the day /(id0 of Adhaa, on the
three days of -ashree) followin# the day of Adhaa, or days when there is doubt
as to the date /e.#., when there is confusion as the be#innin# of 1amadaan <
-ranslator0.
.t is forbidden to sin#le out a Friday or a %aturday for fastin#; to fast all the
time; to start fastin# one or two days before the start of 1amadaan; to fast in
the second half of %ha&baan, unless one has the habit of fastin# re#ularly.
.t is forbidden to fast for two days continuously without breain# one>s fast at
ni#ht; to fast on the 5ay of 3Arafaah in 3Arafaah, unless one does not have an
animal to sacrifice; to rinse one&s mouth or nose e,cessively whilst fastin#; for
a woman to observe a naafil fast when her husband is present, e,cept with his
permission; to forsae suhoor < one should eat or drin somethin#, if only a sip
of water; to en#a#e in obscenity, vehement ar#uments or fi#hts when fastin#.
(ajj and /dhiyah %sacrifices&
.t is forbidden to delay 8a'' with no reason or e,cuse; to en#a#e in obscenity or
ar#uments durin# 8a''.

.t is forbidden for a person in ihraam to wear a shirt, turban, trousers, cloa or
socs; for a woman in ihraam to wear a face+veil or #loves; to uproot, cut down
or strie the trees of the 8aram.
.t is forbidden to carry weapons in the 8aram; to hunt or disturb the animals of
the 8aram; to pic up lost property, unless to find the owner; to put perfume
on one who has died in ihraam, or to cover his face or to embalm the body < he
should be buried in his ihraam #arments, for he will be resurrected recitin# the
-albiyah.
.t is forbidden to leave 8a'' before completin# -awaaf al+Wadaa& /final
circumambulation of the Ia&bah0, but women who are menstruatin# or bleedin#
after childbirth are e,cused.
.t is forbidden to slau#hter one&s sacrificial animal before the (id prayer; to
sacrifice an imperfect animal; to #ive the butcher a fee for slau#hterin#; for
the one who intends to offer a sacrifice to remove anythin# from his hair, nails
or sin once the first ten days of 5hoo&l+8i''ah have started, until after he has
offered his sacrifice.
Trading and earning
.t is forbidden to consume riba /interest, usury0; to en#a#e in transactions that
involve unnown #oods, cheatin# and deception; to sell sheep in return for
meat; to sell left+over water; to sell do#s, cats, blood, into,icants, por, idols,
animal semen used for breedin# purposes; to accept the price of a do#,
because the price of anythin# that Allaah has forbidden is also forbidden,
whether one is buyin# or sellin#.

.t is forbidden to artificially inflate the price of a product which one has no
intention of buyin#, as is done at many auctions.
.t is forbidden to conceal the faults of a product when sellin# it; to sell
anythin# after the second call to prayer on Friday; to sell somethin# which is
not in one>s actual possession; to sell somethin# before tain# possession of it;
to sell #old for #old or silver for silver, e,cept lie for lie.
.t is forbidden for a man to outbid his brother or undercut his brother; to sell
fruits before it is nown for sure that they are free of faults; to cheat in
wei#hts and measures; to hoard #oods; to #o out and intercept travellers
comin# from elsewhere for the purpose of trade < one should wait until they
reach the maretplace, because this is fair and is in the interests of all
concerned.
.t is forbidden for a city+dweller to sell on behalf of a Aedouin /such as a
resident of a city or country actin# as an a#ent for someone who has come from
outside0 < he should leave him to conduct business on his own terms.
.t is forbidden to sell the sin of an animal one has offered in sacrifice; for a
person who has shares in a plot of land or a palm tree, etc., to sell his share
without first offerin# it to his partners; to earn a livin# by means of the
*ur&aan /lie those who recite the *ur&aan for people and as for payment in
return0; to wron#fully consume the property of orphans; to #amble; to en#a#e
in e,tortion; to offer or accept bribes; to steal; to pilfer anythin# from the
war+booty, because this is stealin# from the wealth of all the people.
.t is forbidden to sei2e people&s wealth by force, or to tae it with the
intention of destroyin# it; to withhold from the people the thin#s that are their
due; to conceal lost property that one has found; to tae lost property, unless

one is the ri#htful owner; to cheat in any way; for a Muslim to tae anythin#
from his brother&s property, e,cept with his consent, and whatever is taen by
embarrassin# a person is haraam.
.t is forbidden to accept a #ift in reward for intercedin#; and to accumulate
wealth and distribute it in different parts of the world in such a way that a
person becomes overburdened with it and does not remember Allaah.
Marriage
.t is forbidden to remain celibate and never marry; to be castrated; to marry
two sisters at the same time; to marry a woman and her paternal aunt or
maternal aunt at the same time < re#ardless of which is married first < for fear
of breain# the ties of inship; for a man to marry his father&s wife.
.t is forbidden to mae deals in marria#e, such as sayin#, !Marry your dau#hter
or sister to me and . will #ive you my dau#hter or sister in marria#e$, because
this e,chan#e is wron#ful oppression and is haraam.
.t is forbidden to enter into mut&ah /temporary0 marria#e, which is a marria#e
for a period of time a#reed upon by both parties, after which the marria#e is
over.
.t is forbidden to marry e,cept with a wali /#uardian of the bride0 and two
witnesses; for a man to propose to a woman when his /Muslim0 brother has
already proposed, unless the first suitor #ives up the idea or #ives him
permission; to mae a clearly+stated offer of marria#e to a woman who is in
3iddah because her husband has died, althou#h it is acceptable to hint.

.t is forbidden to mae any ind of offer of marria#e at all to a woman who has
been divorced /talaa)0 once or twice /as she may still return to her husband +
-ranslator0.
.t is forbidden for a divorced woman whose divorce is still revocable to #o out
of her husband&s house or to leave durin# her 3iddah.
.t is forbidden for a man to eep his divorced wife or to tae her bac when he
does not care for her, because this will only prolon# the pain for her and cause
her an#uish.
.t is forbidden for a divorced woman to conceal what Allaah has created in her
womb. .t is forbidden to treat the matter of divorce li#htly.
.t is forbidden for a woman to as for the divorce of another, whether she is
married or en#a#ed, so that she can marry the man instead.
.t is forbidden for a husband and wife to spea to anyone else about the
intimate details of their relationship.
.t is forbidden to mae a woman hate her husband or vice versa. -he Prophet
/peace and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0 forbade men to spea to women
without their husbands& permission.
.t is forbidden for a woman to spend her husband&s money without his
permission; for a woman to forsae her husband&s bed, because if she does this
without a valid e,cuse, the an#els will curse her.
.t is forbidden for a man to annoy a rebellious wife who has come bac to
obeyin# him.

.t is forbidden for a woman to let anyone into her husband&s house without his
permission, althou#h his #eneral permission is sufficient so lon# as the rules of
sharee&ah are not broen.
.t is forbidden to refuse an invitation to a waleemah /weddin# party0 with no
le#itimate e,cuse; to wish a newly+married couple !bi&l+rafaa& wa&l+baneen$
/wishin# them happiness and many sons0, because this is the #reetin# of
=aahiliyyah, and the people of =aahiliyyah used to dislie dau#hters.
.t is forbidden for a man to have intercourse with a woman who is pre#nant
from another man; for a man to withdraw from his wife /coitus interruptus0
without her permission; for a man to noc on the door and startle his family
when returnin# at ni#ht from a 'ourney < but if he has already told them what
time he will arrive, there is nothin# wron# with it.
.t is forbidden for a man to tae any part of his wife&s mahr without her
consent, or to put pressure on her to #ive up her money.
-he practice of 2ihaar /a 'aahili form of divorce in which a man said to his
wife, !Jou are to me lie my mother&s bac$0 is forbidden.
.t is forbidden for a man to show a preference for one of two wives, or to be
unfair in dealin# with his wives.
.t is forbidden to enter into niaah al+tahleel, which is where a thrice+divorced
woman /i.e., one who has received the third and final talaa)0 #ets married so
that she can then be divorced by the second husband and be free to remarry
her first husband.

.t is forbidden for a woman to display her beauty e,cept to her mahrams /close
relatives who she is forbidden to marry0; to mae a wanton display of herself
/tabarru'0; to utter slander, intentionally for#in# falsehood /i.e., by main#
ille#al children belon# to her husband0.
.t is forbidden to treat a mother unfairly on account of her child, or to treat a
father unfairly on account of his child; to separate a mother and child.
.t is forbidden to #o to e,tremes in circumcisin# women.
.t is forbidden for a woman to travel alone without a mahram. .t is forbidden to
shae hands with a non+mahram woman; for a woman to wear perfume when
she is #oin# to #o out and pass by men.
.t is forbidden for a man to be alone with a non+mahram woman; to be a
duyooth /a wea man who has no self+respect and does not care if his
womenfol dress or behave inappropriately0; to loo at a non+mahram woman,
or to follow one #lance with another.
Matters of meat and food
.t is forbidden to eat any ind of dead meat, whether it died by drownin#,
stran#ulation, electric shoc, fallin# from a hi#h place, fi#htin# with another
animal in the herd or was illed by a wild animal < unless one is able to
slau#hter it properly before it dies. .t is forbidden to eat blood, por, anythin#
that has been slau#htered in the name of anythin# other than Allaah, anythin#
that was sacrificed to idols, or anythin# that was slau#htered without havin#
the name of Allaah mentioned over it deliberately.
.t is forbidden to eat the meat or drin the mil of any scaven#er, which is an
animal that feeds on dirt and filth; to eat the meat of any carnivore that has

fan#s or any bird that has talons; to eat the meat of doneys; or to ill fro#s for
medicine, because they are unclean and accordin# to the ma'ority of scholars,
their meat is not to be eaten.
.t is forbidden to torment animals, by restrainin# them and hittin# them with
somethin# until they die, or by locin# them up without food. -he animal that
is thus tortured with arrows is the !mu'aththamah$ which the Prophet /peace
and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0 forbade us to eat, because it is not
slau#htered in the correct way as prescribed by sharee&ah.
.t is forbidden to eat #ame cau#ht by an untrained do#, or where it has been
cau#ht by a number of do#s, such that it is impossible to tell which do# cau#ht
it. .t is forbidden to eat #ame that has been hit by a tool and illed by its
wei#ht, e,cept for #ame that has been struc and pierced by an arrow, and the
name of Allaah has been mentioned over it.
.t is forbidden to ill animals usin# teeth and nails; to slau#hter an animal in
front of another; to sharpen the nife in front of the animal to be illed.
.t is forbidden to eat the food of those who compete in preparin# e,trava#ant
meals for the purpose of showin# off, because this is counted as wron#ful
consumption.
Clothing and adornment
.t is forbidden to be e,trava#ant in clothin#; for men to wear #old; to wear
rin#s on the middle fin#er and the fin#er ne,t to it /the forefin#er0; to wear
iron rin#s.

.t is forbidden to be naed, to wal naed, and to e,pose one>s thi#hs.
.t is forbidden to wear one&s clothes below the anles; to trail one&s clothes
alon# the #round in order to show off; to wear #arments of fame and vanity; to
wear clothes made of sil.
.t is forbidden to wear clothes dyed with red safflower dye, which men should
not wear.
.t is forbidden for men to loo lie women and wear their clothes, and for
women to loo lie men and wear their clothes.
.t is forbidden for women to wear short, ti#ht+fittin# clothes.
.t is forbidden to put shoes on whilst standin#, because of the discomfort that
this entails, especially with laced shoes that need to be tied.
.t is forbidden to wal in only one shoe, because the %haytaan wals in only one
shoe.
.t is forbidden to have tattoos or to file one&s teeth < but this does not include
strai#htenin# the teeth with braces, etc.
.t is forbidden to imitate the mushrieen by lettin# the moustache #row and
trimmin# the beard < we should trim our moustaches and let our beards #row.
.t is forbidden to pluc facial hair, especially the eyebrows; for women to shave
their heads; to add hair e,tensions and wi#s, whether they are made from
human hair or artificial hair < this applies to men and women alie.

.t is forbidden to pluc #rey hairs or to conceal them with blac dye; to dye the
hair blac; or to shave part of the hair and leave part.
.t is forbidden to mae pictures or ima#es of animate bein#s, whether on
clothin#, walls or paper, and whether they are drawn, printed, en#raved,
etched, cast from moulds etc. .f one has to mae pictures, they should be of
trees and other inanimate ob'ects /thin#s that do not have a soul0.
.t is forbidden to use sil or ti#er sins, or anythin# else that is ostentatious,
for furnishin#. .t is forbidden to cover walls.
*iseases of the tongue
.t is forbidden to bear false witness.
.t is forbidden to falsely accuse chaste women.
.t is forbidden to accuse the innocent or to en#a#e in slander or defamation.
.t is forbidden to slander, bacbite, call one another by offensive nicnames,
#ossip, mae fun of Muslims, boast about one&s linea#e, cast aspersions on a
person&s linea#e, swear, curse, utter obscenities, spea in an offensive manner
or utter evil in public e,cept by one who has been wron#ed.
.t is forbidden to lie, and the worst ind of lies are lies about dreams, such as
main# up dreams and visions for the purpose of improvin# one&s status, main#
some material #ains, or alarmin# someone towards whom one feels enmity. 9ne
of the punishments for lyin# about dreams is that the person who is #uilty of
this will be instructed on the 5ay of 1esurrection to do somethin#
impossible, namely to tie two #rains of barley to#ether.
.t is forbidden for a person to praise himself.

.t is forbidden to e,clude people, such as two people e,cludin# a third,
because this maes the e,cluded person sad.
.t is forbidden to hold secret council for sin and wron#doin# and to curse the
believers and those who do not deserve to be cursed.
.t is forbidden to raise one&s voice above the voice of the Prophet /peace and
blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0, which includes raisin# one&s voice above the
voice of a person readin# or recitin# hadeeth, and raisin# one&s voice near his
#rave.
.t is forbidden to curse the dead; to curse the cocerel, because it waes
people for prayer; to curse the wind, because it merely does what it is
instructed; to curse sicness, because it is an e,piation for sin; or to curse the
%haytaan, because this only maes him feel #reat < the best thin# to do is to
see refu#e with Allaah from his evil.
.t is forbidden to pray for or wish for death because of some harm that has
befallen one, or to pray a#ainst one&s self, one&s children, one&s servants or
one&s wealth.
.t is forbidden to call #rapes arm, because the people of =aahiliyyah used to
thin that wine led to #enerosity or nobleness /aram0.
.t is forbidden to say !My soul has become evil /habuthat nafsi0,$ or to say !.

to say it to the Prophet /peace and blessin#s of Allaah be upon him0 with bad

.t is forbidden to as for anythin# before #ivin# salaam, and to praise one
another.
Eti$uette of eating and drinking
.t is forbidden to eat what is in front of others or to eat from the middle of the
platter < one should eat from what is in front of or ne,t to one, because the
baraah /blessin#0 comes in the middle of the food.
.t is forbidden to leave a morsel that has fallen on the #round < one should
remove any dirt and eat it, and not leave it for the %haytaan.
.t is forbidden to drin from vessels of #old and silver; to drin standin# up; to
drin from the ed#e of a broen vessel lest one harm oneself; to drin from the
mouth of the 'u#; to breathe into the vessel; or to drin in one drau#ht < one
should drin in three drau#hts, because this is more en'oyable and more
healthy.
.t is forbidden to blow on food and drin; to eat and drin with one&s left hand;
to eat lyin# on one&s stomach; to put two dates in one&s mouth at once without
first asin# permission from the person with one whom is eatin#, because this
loos #reedy and is unfair to one&s companion.

nothin# else they must be washed before eatin# from them.

.t is forbidden to sleep on a roof that has no walls around the ed#e, lest one
turn over in one&s sleep and fall off.
.t is forbidden to stay alone overni#ht; to leave fires lit in one&s house when
#oin# to sleep; to sleep with somethin# harmful in one&s hand; to sleep on one&s
stomach; to put one le# on top of the other when lyin# on one&s bac, because
this shows the 3awrah /private parts0; to spea about a bad dream or interpret
it, because bad dreams are one of the trics of the %haytaan.
Miscellaneous
.t is forbidden to ill anyone for no le#itimate reason; to ill one&s children for
fear of poverty; to commit suicide.
.t is forbidden to commit 2inaa /fornication or adultery0 or homose,uality. .t is
forbidden to drin alcohol, to mae it, carry it or sell it.
.t is forbidden to run away from the battlefield, e,cept for a le#itimate reason.

.t is forbidden to eavesdrop on people /listen to their conversation without
their permission0; to loo into people&s houses without their permission; to
enter people&s houses without their permission; or to loo for people&s faults.
.t is forbidden to claim to have somethin# that one does not; to boast about
thin#s that one does not have; or to loo for praise for somethin# that one has
not done.
.t is forbidden to enter the houses of peoples who were destroyed by Allaah
without weepin# or showin# re#ret, or seein# to learn a lesson rather than 'ust
looin# around.

.t is forbidden to mae a sinful oath; to spy on one another; to thin badly of
ri#hteous men and women; to envy, hate or forsae one another; or to persist
in falsehood. Arro#ance, pride, showin# off and self+admiration are all
forbidden, as is re'oicin# over some worldly #ain that can lead to arro#ance
and boastfulness.
.t is forbidden to wal in insolence throu#h the earth; to turn one&s face away
from people in pride < which is a si#n of arro#ance; to tae bac one&s charity,
even if one buys it bac; to ill a father who has illed his child.
.t is forbidden for a man to loo at the 3awrah of another man or for a woman
to loo at the 3awrah of another woman.
.t is forbidden to loo at the thi#h of any person, livin# or dead. .t is forbidden
to violate the sanctity of the %acred Months, althou#h fi#htin# the uffaar at
this time is permissible.
.t is forbidden to spend from ill+#otten money.
.t is forbidden to benefit from the labour of a hired worer without payin# him
his wa#es; to be unfair in #ivin# to one&s children.
.t is forbidden to chan#e a will to the detriment of one or more heirs, or to
mae a will in favour of a ri#htful heir, because Allaah has already #iven the
heirs their ri#hts. .f a person wills all his estate to others and leaves his heirs
poor, his will should not be e,ecuted e,cept with re#ard to one+third of the
estate.
.t is forbidden to be a bad nei#hbour, to annoy or disturb one&s nei#hbours, or
to forsae a Muslim for more than three days without a valid reason.

.t is forbidden to throw pebbles between two fin#ers, because this usually
harms people, lie puttin# out an eye or breain# a tooth.
.t is forbidden to be a##ressive and hostile.
.t is forbidden for people to raise their voices above one another when recitin#

people without their permission; to mae a person #et up so that one can sit in
his place; to leave one&s brother when visitin# without asin# his permission
first. .t is forbidden to stand at the head of one who is sittin# down; or to sit in
a place that is partly in sunli#ht and partly in shade, because this is the place
where the %haytaan sits.
.t is forbidden to harm the Muslims; to unsheathe a sword at a Muslim or to
point to a Muslim with a weapon.
.t is forbidden to handle an unsheathed sword, for fear of in'ury; to refuse a
#ift unless it contains somethin# haraam; to be e,trava#ant; to #o beyond one&s
means in servin# a #uest; to #ive money to foolish people; to wish for the
thin#s in which Allaah has made some people to e,cel over others, as both men
and women will have reward for what they have earned.
.t is forbidden to en#a#e in disputes; to feel pity for adulterers and fornicators
when the sentence is carried out on them; to cancel out one&s charity by means
of hurtful reminders.
.t is forbidden to conceal one&s testimony; to oppress orphans; to spurn

.t is forbidden to use bad thin#s for medicine, for Allaah will never put the cure
for this ummah into somethin# that 8e has forbidden them.

him difficult )uestions in order to mae him commit an error or confuse him, or
else to show off one&s own nowled#e and intelli#ence, or to as him
hypothetical )uestions for the sae of ar#ument and not in order to learn more
about one&s reli#ion.
.t is forbidden to play with dice; to curse animals; to scratch one&s face at
times of disaster; to deceive the people under one&s authority.
.t is forbidden to loo at people who are hi#her in status than oneself < one
should loo at those who are lower in status so that one will appreciate the
blessin#s of Allaah and not thin little of them.
.t is forbidden for one person to feel proud and boast over another.
.t is forbidden to #o bac on a promise or to brea a trust.
.t is forbidden to conceal nowled#e, or to intercede for bad purposes.
.t is forbidden to as people for thin#s when one is not in need; to K'arasaMMML

.t is forbidden to administer more than ten lashes, e,cept in the case of one of
the prescribed punishments /hudood0; to lau#h e,cessively; to force the sic to
eat or drin < because Allaah will #ive them to eat and drin; to stare at people
sufferin# from leprosy.
.t is forbidden for one Muslim to alarm another with re#ard to his property or
tae it away, whether this is done in 'est or is serious.

.t is forbidden to swear an oath not to do #ood; in this case one should do #ood

decide in favour of one without hearin# what the other has to say.

completely dar, because this is the time when the shayaateen spread out.
.t is forbidden to pic fruit or harvest at ni#ht, because this deprives the poor

.t is forbidden for a man to wal throu#h the maretplace carryin# anythin#
that may harm the Muslims, such as sharp instruments that are not covered
properly.
.t is forbidden to enter or leave any town that has been stricen by the pla#ue.
Cuppin# is forbidden on Fridays, %aturdays, %undays and Wednesdays; it should
only be done on -hursdays, Mondays or -uesdays.
.t is forbidden to say !yarhumu Allaah /may Allaah have mercy on you0$ to
someone who does not say !al+hamdu Lillaah /praise be to Allaah0$ when he
snee2es.
.t is forbidden to spit in the direction of the *iblah; to brea one&s 'ourney in
order to sleep or rest at the side of the road, because this is the dwellin#+place
of animals.
.t is forbidden to lau#h when someone farts, because this is 'ust the sound of
passin# wind, which can happen to anyone, and not lau#hin# is bein#
considerate towards others.
.t is forbidden to refuse perfume, cushions and aromatic plants.
