The Catcher in the Rye (J. D.

Sallinger Penguin Books, 1994)

Pg. 7: Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.

Pg. 61: Movies: The Bakers Wife, The 39 Steps (Robert Donat)

Pg. 64: Song: Just one of those things. (I guess is from Frank Sinatra)

Pg. 65: Thats the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if
theyre not much to look at, or even if theyre sort of stupid, you fall half in love with
them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They can
drive you crazy. They really can.

Pg. 86: Some people you shouldnt kid, even if they deserve it.

Pg. 77: People always clap for the wrong things. If I were a piano player, Id play it in
the goddam closet.

Pg. 81: One of my troubles is, I never care too much when I lose something it used
to drive my mother crazy when I was a kid. Some guys spend days looking for
something they lost. I never seem to have anything that if I lost it Id cae too much.

Pg. 82: [] It was against my principles and all, but I was feeling so depressed I didnt
even think. Thats the whole trouble. When youre feeling very depressed, you cant
even think.

Pg. 99: I hate it if Im eating bacon and eggs or something and somebody else is only
eating toast and coffee.

Pg. 102: Goddam money. It always ends up making blue as hell.

Pg. 104: If a body catch a body coming through the rye. (Song)

Pg. 105: I dont like any shows very much, if you want to know the truth. Theyre not as
bad as movies, but theyre certainly nothing to rave about. In the first place, I hate
actors. They never act like people. They just think they do. Some of the good ones do,
in a very slight way, but not in a way thats fun to watch. And if any actors really good,
you can tell he knows hes good, and that spoils it.

Pg. 152: But you dont have to be a bad guy to depress somebody you can be a
good boy and do it. All you have to do to depress somebody is give them a lot of phony
advice while youre looking for your initials in some can door thats all you have to
do.

Pg. 155: People never think anything is anything really. Im getting goddam sick of it.

If somebody at least listens, its not too bad.

Pg. 156: [] Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know
its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really like to be. I know its crazy.

Pg. 169: The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause,
while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one. (Wilhelm
Sketel)
