Metropolis Review

The film Metropolis is a beautiful look at a dystopian society and reflects some of the
issues and feelings of the time and is a part of the German expressionist movies of this
time. This film has been beautifully crafted and is full of political views and social
commentary which give us another look into the minds of the artist of this time as pointed
out by Metropolis predicts the ideologies of class and race of the 20th century (Peter
Bradshaw.2010)
Made in 1927 and directed by Fritz Lang one of the first pioneers of Sci-fiction we are
taken on mesmerizing trip into an art deco styled dystopian future where the rich live like
gods and the poor work to the deaths in a hellish machine which keeps the whole city
alive. As ben waters discusses in his review of metropolis
Building on earlier science fiction and endlessly influential on later works, Langs film is a
mammoth marvel, fusing modernism and expressionism, art deco and Biblical spectacle,
Wagnerian bombast, sentimental Marxism and religious millenarianism. Sit close to a big
screen and submit to
the machine. (Ben
Walters 2010)

As an audience we watch as this film take us on a journey
through the first sci fi epic with massive and awe inspiring shots
of the future as never before depicted this film. It has also been
put into everybodys visual banks with it imagery which has been
grounded into our social subconscious by its very well-known
shots and imagery as its plot and subject points have been popularized and used In much of modern cinema
noted in Jonathan Romany review.
it's uncanny to see how many shadows of cinema yet to come it already contains. Things to Come, Blade
Runner, Alphaville and The Matrix are all there in embryonic state. Metropolis has also been a major influence in
pop, with Kraftwerk and Madonna overtly rifling its imagery and oddball soulster Janelle Mone even now kitting
up in Langian robo-chic. But pop admires havent always been kind to Lang's vision (JONATHAN
ROMNEY. (2010).

Its strange to see how a film made so long ago could have
such a bleak view of the future but dont we as artist have a
duty to not just show how beautiful and happy things could be
and are but to show the dark side of the world and to point out
how we can go wrong as a society and what is wrong with our
society .Fritz Lang is one of the main directors we can thank
for this and as thanks this film should be a rite of passage for
any true sci fi or film fan.
