Lesson
objectives

Students should be able to

Define Transformer

Describe the construction and working of
transformer

Applications of transformer

Cross Curricular Links & Real life Applications :
Cross Curricular Links
Links with Chemistry- rectifier transformers are used for electrolysis process of
metal or chemical industries

Real life Applications

Audio transformers are specially designed to be used in audio circuits.

A LAN Ethernet transformer is most often used to allow voice and data
networking to be done over the same wires

A lighting transformer is one that is used specifically in applications having to
do with lighting. They are commonly seen on dimmer switches.

Enquiry, Research & Critical Thinking Skills---
Predict how all component voltages and currents in transformer circuit will
be affected as a result of the following faults.
1)Transformer primary winding fails open:
2)Transformer secondary winding fails open:

Transformer T
1
primary winding fails open: No current through any component, no voltage across any secondary-side
component.

Transformer T
1
primary winding fails shorted: Large current through fuse (which will cause it to blow), little current
through secondary winding or load, little voltage across secondary winding or load.

Transformer T
1
secondary winding fails open: No current through any secondary-side component, no voltage across any
secondary-winding component, little current through primary winding.

Load fails shorted: Large current through fuse (which will cause it to blow), large current through secondary winding
and load, little voltage across secondary winding or load.
