VILLAGE PROFILE

Amritpur is a village in Nainital district covering an area of about 200 acres, having 50
families. The village lies in the foothills of the Nainital Distt. The main sourse of
income is Agriculture and villagers also have livestock for milk purpose. The facilities
like drinking water, electricity, road, telephone etc. are below average. The population
of village is around 2380(census 2001). There is no primary school in the village.
Illiteracy is also a problem in the village. The village is very widely spread with
cluster of houses. Wheat, Sugarcane, Paddy and some of the vegetables are the main
Agricultural crops. Irrigation facilities are very poor in the village. The village receives
good rain in the rainy season. People use only traditional ways of growing crops. They
use their own seed for growing crops. As a result of this the productivity is very low
and they face a lot of problems. Though the great Agriculture University (Pantnagar) is
only 70km. from this village but they don’t take help from there. No any NGO is
working in the village. Some of the NGOs are working in the nearby area but their
focus is on drinking water only. No any Govt. plan is providing any knowledge about
how to increase Agriculture production. Villagers also take cattle’s for milk purpose.
Most of the breeds of cattle’s are indigenous and have very poor milk production.
Villagers are having no other option of income and they face a lot of problems in
ensuring good career of their children. Many of them fall under below poverty line.

Village economy is based on agriculture, which accounts for primary

occupation of the 95% respondents. Some of the villagers are also engaged as the
tenant farmers.

In the village lots of problems are present. But main problem is low income
generation activities, high unemployment, and low household income. Agriculture
being the main source of income and due to unawareness people cannot think beyond
any activity. I personally believe that if people go for diversification in Agriculture,
they can drastically improve their economic condition.
