Subject: Gurbachan Singh Mall Proposed Structural Development Methodologies.
Dear Sir,
The following are the proposed methodologies for the structural development of the Gurbachan Singh Mall in Fiji in order for the consultant to come up with an adequate results:
1.0. The consultant should ask the owner/client if they have existing plans on the old buildings for reference during investigation and planning period.
2.0. In the absence of existing plans, the consultant should conduct structural survey or topographical survey to be able to lay-out the existing geometry of the buildings.
3.0. The consultant should conduct visual inspection or mapping to identify possible damage on the structures such like concrete spalling, unsound concrete, settlement of foundations, unplumbed structures, corroded steel reinforcement etc. Document all the found damages to the superstructure.
4.0. The consultant shall provide material testing to determine the current strength of the structure, possible way is by concrete coring and get some exposed steel so that we could test it to know its corresponding compressive strength for concrete, yield and tensile strength for steel. Or the consultant could also conduct Non-Destructive-Testing (NDT) to the concrete to avoid damages this item is necessary.
5.0. Test pitting is also required to determine the length of embedment of the footing in the absence of existing plans/data. From then, we could also determine if piles are present in the footing.
6.0. Soil Boring is also necessary in the absence of soil bearing capacity data.
7.0. After getting all the needed data the structural analysis will follow. First, prepare design criteria where the list of all needed data is to be breakdown item per item.
8.0. The designer should provide load analysis per level to determine the adequate imposed loads to be carried out floor by floor.
9.0. Prepared structural analysis and model to known structural software such like (Staad, Etabs, and Sap 2000 etc.) whichever is applicable?
10.0. Prepare spreadsheet calculations since there are existing structure that need to be investigated to determine if the structure could retain all the additional imposed load due to changes of occupancy and usage.
11.0. The consultant shall provide several retrofitting scheme to the existing structure if found that structural member is unable to carry the demand loads and present to the owner/client so that the client will also be aware that certain actions is need to be undertaken.
12.0. Prepare design calculations for the new extension buildings as well as schematic structural drawings for construction.
The above discuss items are just only a brief breakdown of all the possible methods to be undergo during the mobilization of the project but something may come along the way that consultant may defined. Furthermore, I saw the photos you have sent to me and really looks like an antique old building , algaes are everywhere due to ponding of water in slabs, corroded exposed reinforcement are present it seems that this structure should undergo retrofitting first before the extension of new floors.
